During my long service in the Pharma industry (~30 years), I have run many short courses and workshops. The jump to A level from GCSE is quite considerable and even the brightest students can struggle initially. Another essential skill needed is the ability to pull together biological content taught in different parts of the syllabus. As exam time approaches, a student has to apply their knowledge and understanding to real exam questions. Practice of exam technique is often a large part of a tutorial session in the run up to A level exams. If the tutee seems comfortable with a topic and would just like to consolidate, I would test them with some questions from either past papers or textbooks. This will ensure that, they are able to apply their knowledge.

Also, I believe memorizing key terms and definitions is very useful in exams so I use flashcards or small tests during the beginning or end of the tuition session to test their understanding and make sure that they learn these key words and definitions.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe confidence is the foundation for real progress. A student who understands the material but doubts themselves will underperform. My job is to close both gaps at once.

Every session is built around what actually earns marks, and I take the time to build genuine rapport with each student. Real progress only happens when someone feels supported and clear on what's expected of them. That's the environment I aim to create every time.
