Recently retired. Until the advent of Covid I would always travel to the tutee. I was forced into online tutoring very reluctantly. Being happy with the technology meant the transition was much smoother than I anticipated.
I am now so happy with this method of tutoring I would even use it if the tutee was living next door.
For some years now I have been tutoring mainly A level to students all over England and Wales. This means I have become conversant with all relevant Exam boards. Then I highlight the contents of the course, provide the student with resources and give online lessons via Google Meet in which I share my screen so the student can see a Miro whiteboard that I use to write notes and explain/solve questions on. Throughout the lesson, the topics that we cover are revisited through homework questions that I set my students to ensure they have sufficient practice and that they can readily apply their knowledge.

Developing the ability to solve different types of questions challenging you from different angles on the same topics, is what is challenged repeatedly in SQA exams which require efficient skills in problem solving. I help equip the student with the knowledge, practice and expertise to deal with exam-type questions after we have covered the theory (notes/topics) of the subject.

I also take into consideration their learning style when teaching them (i.e. visual learner - drawing diagrams and images, auditory learner - asking verbal questions during lessons, kinaesthetic (doing) learner - making quizzes and tasks).

I used to work for Exact Tutor part-time in several branches in East and West London, and have received personal training from a former tutor from MedicMind - a very reputable tutor programme designed to prepare students applying for med school.

In more recent times, I have given broader talks to the public about various topics such as COVID, cancer, psychiatric disorders and advanced personalised medicine.

The most important rule is to focus on the student instead of how you teach them, or more generally, respond accordingly instead of preparing for a series of potential hypothetical situations.

My whole life, I found that most often, 'plans' or 'strategies' were entirely flawed in many cases. With the number of assumptions one would have to make, a single change in these conditions destroys your plan completely.

What I'm trying to say is that not all students are going to be the same, I for one, was a slow learner, whereas many other would pick up on a concept quickly.

My goal is not only to improve grades but also to build confidence, independence and effective study habits. I can also provide parents with regular feedback on progress and recommended next steps.
