The jump to A level from GCSE is quite considerable and even the brightest students can struggle initially. As exam time approaches, a student has to apply their knowledge and understanding to real exam questions. Practice of exam technique is often a large part of a tutorial session in the run up to A level exams. With biology and chemistry, I believe it is vital to understand basic concepts before learning anything in a higher level of detail. Due to this, I believe it is important for tutees to be taught the basics of a topic before learning detail.
If the tutee seems comfortable with a topic and would just like to consolidate, I would test them with some questions from either past papers or textbooks. This will ensure that, they are able to apply their knowledge.

Also, I believe memorizing key terms and definitions is very useful in exams so I use flashcards or small tests during the beginning or end of the tuition session to test their understanding and make sure that they learn these key words and definitions.

I'm Tom, a science educator with over a decade of experience helping students build the knowledge and confidence they need to succeed. My sessions are calm, purposeful and always built around the individual in front of me.

Teaching Experience:
Over the years I've worked with students at every stage of secondary and post-secondary education, from early GCSE preparation through to A Level and beyond. That breadth has shown me that no two learners are the same, and that effective teaching begins with genuinely understanding how a student thinks.

I previously served as Head of Department at a respected private tutorial college in Bath, leading a team delivering high-quality, results-focused tuition. That role sharpened my understanding of what students need most in the months before exams: clarity, structure and a tutor who holds them to a high standard while keeping sessions productive and positive.
