This is to ensure the strongest possible performance in the real exams.

With me as a tutor, I will also facilitate the student to completely finish the Biology content five months before the exam. This approach is strongly recommended as it gives the student a total of five months to do intense exam practice. I am familiar with both the AQA and OCR exam boards and have taken part in a AQA Continuing Professional Development course for A-level Biology. In addition to tutoring, I have been teaching other subjects to students mainly between the ages of 12-18 at an established educational Institute in Bradford for seven years. I appreciate that it's not always possible to get the most out of every lesson and so some students may benefit from having a personal tutor to go over areas of difficulty and to fully grasp and understand the concepts to do better in school and in assessments.

I have worked with thousands on children in the past 10 years working within education. I enjoy the process of working with parents and students to evaluate what students' strengths and weaknesses are, and set relevant goals and smart actions to ensure progress is made both short and long-term. I have been a full-time, specialist, one-to-one biology tutor for 34 years. I was based in Oxford, for 25 years and was widely regarded as 'Oxford's Premier Biology Tutor'. I have now moved away from Oxford to rural Devon and have been offering my services online only, nationally and worldwide, for the past nine years via the medium of Skype and 'Scribblar'. Scribblar is an interactive online whiteboard that is better than face-to-face tuition as there is zero travelling and waiting time and cost and it is more intimate and concentrated than 'in-person' tuition. I have taught online to 43 countries per date and can teach up to 55 hours per week. I have my own printed, illustrated notes for all sections of all the A-level specifications, plus the IB, and many of the GCSE specifications which I can e-mail in advance of tutorials as well as putting them up on Scribblar. I charge £80 per hour normally but offer a £10 per hour discount for tuition after 11 am and before 3 pm on weekdays.

Tutoring Approach:
Stick to the specification. Do ALL the past paper questions and go through them with the mark schemes. Take the exam. and get on with your life.

I like to work in a very methodical and structured fashion and not confuse effective work with hard work. The students who say at the end "yes, I learned biology - but, better still I learned how to study" are the ones with whom I know I have really succeeded.

Apart from an internet connection all that you need for tutorials is a thin A4 ring binder with a copy of the specification punched and put into the front and some coloured dividers in the back. If you are a retake student I ask you to highlight the specification (in yellow with solid highlighter if you are quite happy with the content; dotted highlighter if you are a bit unhappy with it and no highlighter if you have not done it or have forgotten it). This will tell me where to start and I can estimate to within an hour or so how many lessons will be needed to 'reteach' the syllabus.

I have board-specific, illustrated notes for all of the UK A-level specifications and IB, and for most of the GCSE specifications.
Effectively I have written a textbook for you and give you notes (to be filed in the coloured dividers) via e-mail and Scribblar (my interactive online whiteboard) to fill in any gaps in your knowledge. As I cover the specification I highlight my copy in pink so that I can monitor progress.

I have banks of past paper questions that I can e-mail to you that you can work through - these are specific to one exam. specification and contains not only the most recent AS/A2 papers and mark schemes but also the preceding many years of papers for that specification, chopped up into topic headings. So, for example, it will take an hour to 'cover' The Heart and then I'll give you the questions specifically on the heart on that board to do before the next tutorial. It is all very straightforward and actually rather less hard work than doing it in a slapdash, non-systematic fashion. The study skills that you will learn will stand you in good stead throughout life.

The style of tutoring needed by individual students will vary. It may start with ensuring understanding of the key concepts in biology at an appropriate level. The jump to A level from GCSE is quite considerable and even the brightest students can struggle initially. Another essential skill needed is the ability to pull together biological content taught in different parts of the syllabus. As exam time approaches, a student has to apply their knowledge and understanding to real exam questions. Practice of exam technique is often a large part of a tutorial session in the run up to A level exams. It's all about the foundations. When students start lessons with me, I find even the brightest students almost always have gaps in basic knowledge. Often these are not picked up at school, masked by exam technique or being good at past papers. However, when the real exam comes round, only a mastery of the foundations of each topic will allow students to access the highest-grade questions.

In our first lesson together, we will speak through your goals - is it getting into a grammar school? Passing your GCSE Maths? Getting an A in Chemistry A level? Whatever the goal, I will then talk you through what is needed to get there. And to be upfront, that will mean work outside lessons as well which I will help guide you through. We will then speak through your progress so far - recent test scores, topics you're struggling with, revision habits - and I will use this to build up your bespoke programme for our lessons.

In our lessons I will then focus on mending the foundations of each topic. This is achieved through a combination of explanations, focussed practice and past exam questions. Before we move on to a new topic, my students should be able to explain the concept back to me in detail, ensuring all the needed content is covered.

When explaining a topic, I will ask LOTS of questions to make sure learning is active throughout. For example:

A proton has a positive charge, neutron neutral charge, and electron negative charge. Now tell me what charge a proton has.

This type of questioning is critical and is really the difference between learning in lessons at school compared to one to one or small group tuition. Making sure my students have a comprehensive understanding of each topic is critical to success.
