Personal Description:
I'm Pauline, and I specialise in French and biology. It sounds an odd combination, but read on and I'll tell you more.

For French: I'm half French, complete with both British and French passports. I am fluent in the language, having started with "survival French" at the age of five to yell at my cousins, and then studying it at both GCSE (A* grade) and A-level (A grade). I go to France regularly and enjoy reading news articles in French. For lessons, I usually mix in reading, speaking, listening and grammar, as well as some history, geography and French current affairs to bring it to life. I am also available to practice speaking French, to improve your accent. I can teach both students for exam prep and adults if you're going to France and need some help with asking for directions and a coffee/glass of wine!

For biology: I again studied at GCSE and A-level and then did three degrees in the general field of biology! My PhD was in biomechanics so I specialise in anatomy and physiology, exercise science and cardiovascular; but feel free to contact me and we can discuss what you need. I can even teach plant science! A common request is to go through past papers: often, students have a good knowledge of the subject but find it hard to answer exam questions, especially AQA. My specialty is in exam technique, helping you to understand the questions and what they're really asking for. I have a large bank of past papers and questions of all shapes and sizes that we can go through.

I'm patient and friendly and use a flexible approach so you learn at your speed. Having obtained my PhD, I can relate to students and the specific pressures they face. I am DBS checked and can supply references on request.

Lessons are £30 per hour per person and £50 for two hours, including travel in and around Newcastle. There will be a small charge to cover my fuel for a longer drive, but I'm happy to discuss.

I may not be the cheapest but I'm experienced, reliable, friendly and flexible - I'd rather be good than cheap!

At the moment I am quite near full capacity but give me a shout and I'll do my best to help.

Teaching Experience:
I have been tutoring since 2008, working with a variety of ages and in a range of topics from French tuition to sports coaching. I have taught over 40 students, both school students and adults, and have excellent references.

Tutoring Approach:
I will work closely with you to achieve your goals, if that's to improve in the subject for its own sake, to pass an exam or even to be able to order in French at a restaurant. During the first session we'll agree on a timetable and set specific goals. We'll set aside a few minutes during each subsequent session to assess our progress. I am patient, friendly and reliable and above all I love teaching!

Hello. My name is Dr. Zara and I tutor students in the age group 13-18. I hold a Ph.D. in medical biochemistry and a PGCHE from the University of Kent. I am currently working at the University of Bristol.

I specialise in teaching Chemistry and Biology at A-level, specifically for OCR and AQA exam boards. I also teach Edexcel Biology (SNAB). I come across as a friendly, patient and enthusiastic tutor. All that I can say is that Ellie is fantastic. When she was teaching myself and my brother A Level Chemistry, she always gave short, concise explanations of concepts in a way that we easily understood. Also, she gave us past paper questions after each topic so that we had plenty of practice at exam technique. She marked these and sent us feedback on what to improve on. Recently retired. Until the advent of Covid I would always travel to the tutee. I was forced into online tutoring very reluctantly. Being happy with the technology meant the transition was much smoother than I anticipated.
I am now so happy with this method of tutoring I would even use it if the tutee was living next door.
For some years now I have been tutoring mainly A level to students all over England and Wales. This means I have become conversant with all relevant Exam boards. After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. I will first see what the student finds most difficult and what their weaknesses are and then strive to overcome them. Each student will have their own learning methods, some may learn by understanding the whole concept then going into the exam questions, some want to go through exam questions while they are learning the concept to see how the theory can be applied to the problems. Some may learn visually with experiments or examples whereas others will learn through trial and improvement of their own. I will spend the first session finding out how they like to learn and design a program just right for that individual student.
Hopefully once we start tutoring, the students will feel much more confident with the subject and the key to success for any exam is self confidence. I will always be there as a guide, a mentor, a friend to help them through what they find difficult.

I love past papers! These for me were key when I was revising for my Highers, Advanced Highers, and even for the Medical School entrance exams such as the BMAT, UCAT, and TMS (Germany). I believe they offer key information on what exactly it is you need to know, and to what standard/ depth one must answer questions. At the beginning I like to get a feel for what level of knowledge students have, and together we set goals for what we wish to achieve (e.g. time remaining until the exam, what grade they wish to achieve, if there is any particular section they are struggling with, etc..). Preferably, I like to communicate with my students before the lesson, so we can decide what learning outcomes to focus on during our session, so we can both prepare beforehand.

I very much enjoy helping students understand and enjoy learning the concepts in Biology and chemistry needed to succeed in passing GCSE and A-level courses.( also Higher and Nat 5 courses in Scotland).

Teaching Experience:
I taught for 18 years as Assistant Curriculum Leader in Science at Clydebank College in Glasgow. I also taught a second year and third year university course in Biology with the Open University from 1998 to.2003. Following retirement from full-time teaching, I worked part-time as a Lab Leader with the first year B.Sc.Biology students for 5 years.

Tutoring Approach:
I can make use of a variety of resources, including written course materials, videos and animations available online and use of a whiteboard to explain calculation methods, to help students understand and learn course work. I feel it is important to adapt my teaching approach to meet the needs of each individual student.
