I have more than 25 years experience as Italian language coach/teacher in the world of opera: I have also worked, amongst other institutions, at Royal Colege of Music, Royal Opera House, Paris Opera, Opéra de Lille, Opera North, Scottish Opera, Welsh National Opera, and the Royal Academy of Music.

Teaching Experience:

Tutoring Approach:
I tailor the lessons to meet the student's needs, ability and aspirations.
When possible I try to follow a textbook, as I think this gives a good structure to our courses. The student would be expected to do some homework between lessons, as this is hugely beneficial to learning.
The aim is to enable the student to 1) read and understand Italian, 2) speak and express oneself, 3) write and 4) understand when listening.

I am 54 years old and I have been a self employed tutor for over five years. I live in Nelson and always travel to the homes of my students. When tutoring my students, it is crucial to establish a relationship with not only the student but the rest of the family. This helps establish a relaxed, and workmanlike atmosphere quickly so that progress can be made quickly. I spend the first few lessons establishing specific areas that need attention within the subject/s I am teaching. I am very well resourced with both text books and worksheets specifically designed for each student. I am well prepared for the new GCSE Maths syllabus and provide text books for pupils taking the 11+. I set homework by negotiation, and try to mark it before the next lesson, distance and time constraints allowing. Where possible I try to liaise with my student's teachers in school, but this can prove difficult.

I am SEN trained in the areas of Dyslexia (Language), Dyscalculia (Math), Attention (ADD/ADHD), Dysgraphia (Handwriting) and Autism and am a qualified remedial therapist (Davis Facilitator).

I am a Whole Brain Practitioner with the Kobus Neethling Institution. I also have a Finance Degree and Art Therapy background.

Over the past 10 years, I have owned numerous Maths and English Reading Centres and have worked with hundreds of children. I have specialised knowledge in eye kinetic, perception development, learning and behavioural difficulties.

During my years of owning my Maths, Langauge and Reading centres, I have worked with hundreds of children. Most of the children that I worked with were struggling before working with me, but sometimes I got children who were very bright but were not reaching their full potential. Early on in my working career, I worked in Investment Banking in London and internationally, before changing careers to teaching, focusing on remedial therapy.

I practice now as a specialised remedial therapist (SEN) and focus on learning and behavioral issues.

I came back to the UK to do my GCSE's in which I paid extra to do a Greek GCSE and I gained an A in this.

I have no teaching experience however I am an easy going, confident and caring person who can go at your own pace and teach you things that you would like to know.

The first session I would engage with you to find out a bit about yourself and what you would like to achieve in our lessons. I would then create lessons and create you some homework.

Tutoring Approach:
It is easy to overcomplicate things.

- Anyone can learn anything. It's a matter of method, support, application, and belief.
- Students learn new material at first by seeing a need to learn the new thing (e.g. because they don't know how to solve a new problem), and connecting new information to things they already know.
- They then need to strengthen this understanding by engaging in problems themselves and trying to remember what they have learned.
- Many students need to gain confidence. This partly comes from encouragement, but true confidence comes from progress and success, which comes from following the above.
- Students need guidance. It's challenging enough to try to focus on the material. Teachers need to make sure that all of students' focus is placed on thinking about the content, rather than on sideline issues like trying to figure out what comes next.
- Efficiency is important. Most people have specific targets (e.g. passing an exam). Things need to happen quickly.
- At the same time, early stages sometimes need to take longer in order to build a foundation for what follows. Taking a step back can be important in order to be clear on what's really going on, and avoiding rote memorisation or "going through the motions".
