I find that a better understanding of concepts can make maths education smoother and more enjoyable, so in most cases I make this a priority. If you can teach a pupil to feel excited about maths you hardly have to teach them any more maths, as they will just soak it up by themselves!

A major advantage of one-to-one tuition is the ability to tailor sessions to a pupils needs, so my teaching methods vary with each pupil. I apply to tutoring the same skills that I have used during my extensive time as a trainer - I motivate by encouragement, patience and praise, and use a teaching approach that will suit the learning style of my student. I also enforce strict deadlines and standards in order to maximise the learner's gain from the teaching time and to ensure that they use their study time wisely and efficiently. My attitude towards learners is that the only silly question is the one which they want to ask but don't, and that if they do not understand something then it requires me to explain it in a different way. I am an enthusiastic student of classics and ancient history, very passionate about teaching. I have learned Greek and Latin in university, and enjoyed learning them very much. I want to share my enthusiasm for the topic and teach Greek and Latin to others. I have an MA in ancient history from Durham University, and have finished my PhD in the same topic at UCL.
