Personal Description:
As a 63 year old with 17 years teaching, I have a lifetime of real experiences outside teaching. This includes 20 years as an RAF technician using maths and physics and 10 years in the business and computing world. Consequently I can deliver teaching to students that is real and meaningful. Domestically I have four children (three have left home), a cat called Abby and Freddie the gold fish.

Teaching Experience:
I am very good at my job as a full time maths teacher and I teach/tutor students with a range of abilities and learning difficulties. My experience and ability to teach well has consequently produced excellent results for students. The focus of my tutoring is to develop a students confidence and independence to think logically in maths. I have extensive experience of providing professional support to students in their home, or tutoring online.

Tutoring Approach:
Over the years I have tutored many students in their homes and they have gone on to achieve excellent grades. Due to the fantastic rich varieties of learning activities, and the high level of interaction, most of my tutoring is now delivered online. Parents are often sceptical at first, but after a short demonstration, most of my potential students and parents take the online option. Delivered directly into your home via live Internet, the benefits of online learning are massive: all sessions are recorded, students have access to hundreds of PowerPoint, accurate assessment, and students make rapid progress. After the first couple of sessions parents begin to understand why traditional tutoring methods are very poor and often produce limited results. My aim is to develop a student's confidence and identify any barriers to learning. Effective learning and thinking skills can be developed through gentle questioning and guiding a student so they are able to achieve. I feel it's important as a tutor to develop listening skills so that one can pick-up on areas where the student needs support. Some assessment is necessary to show how a student has progressed. I believe my experience and enthusiastic approach helps me to present difficult concepts in a simple way, and online tutoring is ideal. I have over 13 years of experience teaching languages, and hold a PGCE & Master's degree in teaching from the University of Oxford. I have taught French and Spanish to GCSE and A-level, always securing excellent results for my students. I began teaching Spanish back in the 1970s and formally qualified as a Modern Language Teacher in 1982, having done my teacher training (P.G.C.E.) at Leeds Trinity University. I have taught Spanish at various levels and at various institutions and also spent 15 years at Feltham Community School teaching evening classes at G.C.S.E. level. I have lived and travelled abroad, notably Mexico, Spain and Argentina, where I met my wife (we have a bilingual daughter as we speak Spanish in the home). I also spent many years as a translator and interpreter for various organizations before a long career in I.T. at British Airways. I have now returned to my first love of languages.

Tutoring Approach:
I teach both in small groups and one-to-one depending on the individual requirements. My style varies depending on age and whether the student is studying for an exam. For those wishing to take the GCSE or other exams in Spanish, I will cover the syllabus of the individual's exam board: in Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire this is currently AQA, whereas in Middlesex, where I used to teach, it is AEB. With adults, depending on the level and groups size (if teaching a group), I sometimes use the sort of techniques employed in teaching English as a Foreign Language.
In all cases I use the medium of Spanish, depending on the level, but where necessary will explain particular aspects of grammar in English.
I have worked for many years in industry, so I do not cover just academic language. For example, in the past I have taught students from Trading Companies, Health Care organizations, Banks, government organizations, airlines etc.

I'm a native English speaking tutor in the Westminster/Victoria area with a university degree in English Literature and Creative Writing.
I developed a love for reading at an early age, which eventually expanded to writing as well, and which led me to study English Literature and Creative Writing at university. I started off teaching English in Japan, but through a strange turn of events ended up in the Financial Industry, where I worked for over a decade. However, through the process of tutoring my own son, and then his classmates and friends, I re-discovered my passion for English, and teaching, and decided to pursue it as a career. It has been an incredibly rewarding experience so far, and I've enjoyed it every step of the way.

I have in-depth experience teaching children composition, comprehension, verbal and non-verbal reasoning for 7/8+, 11/13+ and Common Entrance, and have helped a number of children get into schools such as Westminster, King's College Wimbledon, St Paul's and City of London.

Tutoring Approach:
I try to encourage a love of reading and writing in all of my students, both by making lessons enjoyable and by building their self-confidence. While English can sometimes seem a dry and boring subject, I believe it shouldn't be, and that any child can learn to enjoy it given the right approach. A large part of the enjoyment comes from children learning to stretch themselves beyond their existing boundaries, and learning to think in new and creative ways.

For this reason, I approach lessons with patience and humour, but most of all with the intention to help children push past what they think themselves capable of. I find that children usually respond well to this approach, and often develop and improve rapidly as a result.

I am currently on a gap year where I would be at University if not for covid. I have passions for music, martial arts and maths (so long as it starts with an M, it's probably good). I think that this year has been a nightmare for students and teachers alike and I would love to lend my experience to help out with any students struggling, so I have decided to take on online tutoring work during this year.

Teaching Experience:
I have not done paid tutoring work before (though the offer has arisen). Mostly I have taught friends and locals or explained what I'm studying to unwitting bystanders at church or school.

Tutoring Approach:
I think it's most important that the student understands the essence of the subject and can think critically about it, and I like to discuss this with students until we can apply this understanding to the syllabus and the exam to come such that anything they've learned before or will learn on that topic will make sense. If the content is difficult for the student I can explain from a number of angles, including visual methods such as the Desmos graphing calculator.

Enthusiastic and hardworking private tutor, currently studying Engineering at St John's College Oxford, tutoring during the holidays and term time. I'm a Music Graduate, and will soon be a Philosophy Graduate [Edinburgh Napier University and University of Wales TSD, respectively]. I work in the third sector covering off humanitarian needs in Africa, Animal welfare in Asia and the care environment/Homelessness in the UK.
