Personal Description:
I am a London-based artist, with a BA from the Slade and an MA from the Royal College of Art. I exhibit regularly with galleries in the UK and abroad. Residencies include the Abbey Fellowship at the British School at Rome and Palazzo Monti. I have been shortlisted for Bloomberg New Contemporaries and the John Moores Painting Prize. In my studio practice I use a range of painting mediums and approaches, including oils, watercolour and fresco.

Teaching Experience:
I teach Drawing and Painting in all mediums. For eight years I was a Core Tutor on the Foundation Year at the Royal Drawing School (now part of the King's Foundation). This involved leading painting workshops, one-to-one tutorials and portfolio guidance.

I have taught art to people of all ages, though predominantly to teenagers and young adults.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach is to work out what the student's needs are, through listening, rather than trying to impose a particular idea. Having said that, I would generally encourage drawing and painting from observation, at least as a foundation for other projects. My strengths are in painting with water colour, oil and acrylic, as well as drawing. I am able to help students build on their understanding of art history and I can give advice and guidance on any written work.

I first became interested in teaching through working as a private tutor with GCSE students, something I am doing since I finished my graduation, training to become a leader in the process. This made me realise I enjoyed working with the people in their learning process, and college experience confirmed tutoring/teaching as a career choice. My academic education and teaching practices have given me a good understanding of the curriculum and of what makes effective teaching.

Tutoring Approach:
I make a conscious effort to ensure I am not just catering for visual learners like myself, but try to see lessons through other learners' eyes. For example, to introduce pictograms to numeracy entry level class, I got the learners to create 'human pictograms' arranged by name length, pets, eye colour, etc. and then transferred that information as pictograms to the board. Kinaesthetic learners were thereby catered for in the physical movement and manipulation, visual learners in the pictograms created on the board and audio learners as we discussed and interpreted the graphs.

I have in particular come to understand the value of sharing learning objectives and success criteria with students. Knowing exactly what is expected and how they can achieve allow learners to focus more clearly on tasks.

I feel it is important to make learning interesting and creative, and one way to achieve this is using real life example; this allows learners to explore and understand situations and express feelings, thoughts and emotions. An example of how I have successfully used real life situation was with a GCSE class, working out the area of the classroom to decide the correct amount of carpet needed for the classroom. I gave the students measuring tape to measure the length and width of the classroom. They were incredibly enthusiastic and threw themselves into the task. They found this a fun, enjoyable and worthwhile learning experience, which enabled them to better understand the situation and empathise with those concerned.

Hello my name is Anne-Marie, I am from Ireland but have been living in the UK since 2004. This is now a place I call home. I realised I had a flare for imparting knowledge when I became a basketball trainer at 15, working with Primary and Secondary pupils. I also loved to write and sing, and got a lot of inspiration for my writing from movies and literature. I am still enthusiastic about going to the cinema, or discovering a new novel or a new (or old) band. On top of these interests, I'm passionate about language, poetry, psychology, personal development, nutrition and beautiful coastal landscapes.

Since my arrival in Bristol in 2005, I first worked as an Italian Linguist for an international corporation.
