Personal Description:
After completing my D.Phil from the University of Oxford, I worked for 7 years as a Senior Biologist for a small drug discovery company where I was responsible for screening new drug targets in tissue models for human disease. Over the years I've had so many comments from students/colleagues about my ability to break subjects down to ease understanding, and coupled with my passion for science and sharing that with others I decided to change career and become a full-time science tutor. I've never looked back!

I am also a freelance examiner for Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) - examining is invaluable to my role as a science tutor and to the development of my students' abilities in preparation for their examinations. It has taught me to understand the very specific focus of each syllabus as a whole, to read for the specific aim of relevant text, and to concentrate not just on surface comprehension but to expand science beyond basic skills.

I have many hobbies but particularly enjoy outdoor pursuits including: sailing, mountaineering, climbing, mountain biking and running. Most of my free time though is spent with my wonderful husband and beautiful tots!

My undergraduate degree (2010) was in Biology from Imperial College, London, where I continued to study to Masters level (2011) in Reproductive and Developmental Biology. between 2013-2016 I completed my PhD in reproductive endocrinology. therefore my knowledge of biology spans multiple subject areas.

My Name is Rachel and I have finished my final year at the University of Glasgow, where I studied a Bachelor of Music with Honours. I am a very positive, hardworking person. I am a singer and also have many years of experience working with the Kodaly method of music education. I have achieved ABRSM Grade 5 Theory, The National Youth Choir of Scotland's Go For Gold Certificate (which is accredited to Grade 5 Theory) and have also achieved Grade 8 in Voice and Grade 7 in Oboe through the ABRSM. I am a first study singer, and have several years teaching and assisting in teaching theory.

I have worked with the National Youth Choir of Scotland for 2 years and have been doing music workshops in schools with Primary 3 and 4. I understand that some of the economics and business concepts can be quite complex and some of the diagrams challenging, so I will be very patient with you and will make sure you fully understand every topic in the syllabus. With the recent major overhaul of GCSEs and A Levels, it is a great challenge for schools to cover all the course content in class and prepare students thoroughly for the external examinations. With large class sizes and often a lack of individual speaking practice, pupils can lack confidence and not achieve their full potential in their exams or lessons in school. This overwhelm students and could stress them as they may find they have not had enough time or opportunities to prepare themselves for the Speaking Exam or writing skills.
It is, essential to review past papers and study the specific requirements for a given exam; however, this is not everything, and I believe that there are some more general principles which help across the board. For example, writing techniques, translation, and of course motivation and focusing in grammar will help to achieve the best possible outcome.
Regarding A level, I know perfectly how to help students to obtain the highest scores in their exams as I am an external examiner who marks A level exam for Edexcel and AQA.I have attended numerous workshops for films and literature, besides my knowledge obtained from my Journalism degree and Spanish schooling.
