I am a fully qualified Secondary Chemistry and Science Teacher. I was Head of Science and KS5 Chemistry coordinator in my previous school and now I run my own education support centre in Birmingham City Centre. Prior to my teaching career. I was a Research Fellow at the University of Birmingham conducting research in the field of nanotechnology.
I have acquired the following qualification: PGCS (Chemistry), QTS, MRSC (Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry), Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Chemistry, a Master of Research degree (Msc) in material science and Bachelor of Science degree (Bsc) in Chemistry.

I believe the best way to be successful academically is by hard work, patience and the appropriate guidance. When students do not achieved the top grade for a subject, it is not because they don't work hard enough or they are not bright. It is purely because they do not have the right exam technique and guidance. Hence I believe with my support, students can achieve their desired grade because I understand where the difficulties lie.

Teaching Experience:
I have over 15 years of tutoring and school teaching experience in A-level Chemistry, in both AQA and OCR board. I have taught over 100's of A level and GCSE students over the years. I am a mature Scottish Chartered Teacher who qualified initially in 1994. I received the Chartered Teacher from the general teaching council for Scotland in 2010. I have experience of tutoring students from 2006 and I am very enthusiastic in my work. I do not watch the clock and will prepare lessons to meet the needs of the student. I gained a M.A.Ed.(Special Needs) in 2005 and have found it invaluable in identifying and overcoming barriers to learning.Presently I have a wide range of students including those with Dyslexia and Aspergers. With over 10 years education experience, I have taught in a variety of schools up to and including A Level computer science. Based in Leeds, I have led multiple subject areas with highly successful student outcomes. Since April 2019, I have had the privilege of leading Secondary Computing Education for the National Centre for Computing, across England.

Since starting my teaching career in 2012, I have been Curriculum Leader of a mixture of subjects including Computer Science, ICT, Business and Health & Social Care. Under my leadership, GCSE Computing results in 2017 were among the highest performing in Leeds and in the top 8% of the UK (BCS / Roehampton Computing Report, 2018).

From 2017 - 2019 I led a school-centred teacher training programme for secondary computing teachers in Leeds, this involved training the next generation of computing teachers and supporting them throughout their teacher training year.

I joined the National Centre for Computing Education as the Secondary Education Lead in April 2019, leading secondary teacher training to upskill computing teachers across England, ensuring the next generation of students receive a world class computing education.

Teaching Experience:
I have taught in schools in Leeds since 2012, my first teaching role included the introduction and leadership of GCSE Computing, the first cohort to complete this GCSE were one of the highest performing cohorts in Leeds and within the top 8% of schools across the country (Source: BCS, Roehampton Computing Report, 2018). This role also included the delivery of OCR Cambridge Nationals in ICT and iMedia - 100% of students achieved a level 2 qualification.

My second school involved me expanding my leadership to lead computing, computer science, business and health and social care. Results in this school increased rapidly, upon my arrival only 8% of students studying towards the ICT CiDA qualification had achieved a grade A*-C on their examined unit, under my leadership this rose to 76% within 9 weeks and to 100% at the end of the qualification. Student progress measures showed students achieved +2.7 grades higher compared to similar students across the country (GCSE results, 2019). Likewise, significant improvements were made in computer science, results also rose from 36% grade 9-4 to 98% grade 9-4 within one year, student progress measures showed students performed +1.9 grades higher compared to similar students across the country (GCSE results, 2019).

Between 2017 & 2019, I led a school-centred initial teacher training (SCITT) programme for secondary computing teachers in Leeds, this involved training the next generation of computing teachers and supporting them throughout their teacher training year. This process also included running a subject knowledge enhancement programme and running several 'Computing Subject Days' to develop pedagogical understanding in the subject.

In April 2019, I joined the National Centre for Computing Education, a new initiative, funded by the Department For Education, introduced in 2019 to support teachers with subject knowledge and the confidence to teach computing. I currently lead the secondary computing education strategy, leading on secondary teacher training, Isaac Computer Science, quality assurance, teacher residentials and more.

I am currently Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) for Isaac Computer Science.

Previously, I was a Research Fellow designing spacecraft structures having finished my PhD Mechanical Engineering. Following a Master's degree in Engineering (M.Eng) from Imperial College London in the late 1980's, I have over 30 years senior management experience in the financial services sector (investment management and private equity) at CEO, CIO, COO level, having worked for many of the world's leading investment banks and asset management firms. I am widely travelled, articulate and have been described as charismatic and engaging with a good sense of humour. I come from a family that is passionate about sport and I have also served as Trustee of a well-known children's charity.

Teaching Experience:
I have selectively tutored children and young adults on a 1:1 basis both face-to-face and more recently via Zoom/Teams/Skype in Mathematics and Science. I still own and serve as a director of a financial services company and I am therefore only able to tutor a small number of students in any given academic year. Over the years I have worked with individuals across the spectrum of ability from nuclear physicists to those who found academic studies challenging.

I firmly believe that every individual is unique and there is no single "best approach" to tutoring.
