William - Clerkenwell tutor
Information About William:
Personal Description:
I am an engineering graduate from Texas A&M University in the United States, in the UK until December. I have a strong grasp of maths, physics and computer science, and the ability to translate that into elementary terms in order to help others grasp them. I love teaching others and the opportunity to help out in the community here really appeals to me! I am a British citizen, but I've been living in the U.S. for the last 16 years where I went to school and university. My hobbies include sports (I played lacrosse for my University) and music (I love playing piano!). I am basically just trying to provide for myself while I'm here in the UK visiting family.
Teaching Experience:
I've worked with children professionally and voluntarily, teaching and mentoring.
I was a camp counselor at Alpine Camp for boys in Mentone, Alabama, living with and mentoring boys in a traditional boys camp environment. I got to know them on a personal level and taught them daily bible lessons as well as life lessons that can be learned in the hills of Alabama living in a cabin! I worked with boys aged 8-14.
I was also a student leader at my Church in Houston, TX where I hung out one on one with boys aged 11-15. There I mentored them in a religious setting as well as just enjoyed playing games and enjoying the Houston summer with them.
As far as tutoring goes, I have done a couple of semesters of volunteer tutoring when I was at Texas A&M where I worked with 14-18 year old boys and girls from a local high school teaching anything from Maths to English.
In addition to that I was also given an offer to teach in the United States with a program called Teach for America, which is a prestigious program for top university graduates to go to urban state schools and teach. As a maths and science graduate I was very valuable to them, but I elected not to commit two years of my life to professional teaching.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring will be two fold. I want to connect and inspire. First I want to connect with the student and build a relationship to gain their friendship and respect. This can occur over several sessions, or it can occur quickly, depending on the nature of the student. Having the friendship and respect of a student means that they will listen more and listen better, and hopefully as a result learn more. Secondly, I want to inspire the student to learn the material with real examples, and personal anecdotes. Inspiration is the key to getting a student excited about the material, which helps them to want to learn, rather than just being forced to learn. Hopefully my personality and excitement about maths, physics and computer science will allow me to do those things naturally and easily!
