Elizabeth - Durham tutor

Information About Elizabeth:

Personal Description:

I am about to return to Durham to continue my own education, having been a teacher of history (and various other things) for the last four years. (Further details of my teaching experience in the box below)

Before becoming a teacher, I always knew that's what I wanted to be, and nothing has changed that in the last 4 years; in fact my passion for teaching has grown, and I have learnt some truly valuable skills whilst in post. I was promoted to Head of Department (History) in 2011, and this has given my a huge amount of insight into the workings and specifications of different exam boards at both GCSE and A Level.

I am taking a brief period away from teaching to complete at least a Masters degree in Early Modern History, with the full intention of returning to it in the future. In the meantime I would like very much to share my passion for history at all levels, and my teaching experience, with young people in the North East area who are perhaps struggling with particular topics or even a whole syllabus; with pupils who just can't access the work going on around them in lessons, for whatever reason; with those exam candidates that are marks away from the grade they want/need - be that the C grade or the highly desirable A*.

On a slightly more personal level I am 27 years old, grew up as the eldest of 4 children near Dover in Kent, am a keen trumpet player and skier, love cinema and film in general, and am normally to be found quietly reading or furiously writing somewhere.
I drive and am willing to travel 30m from Durham (in any direction). Please do feel free to email me, I will be more than happy to answer any questions you may have.

Teaching Experience:

I have been a teacher at an independent secondary boarding school since September 2008. My roles there have been as follows:

2008-2009: Teacher of KS3, GCSE & A Level Geography; teacher of KS3 History; year 13 School house (boys) tutor
2009-2010: Teacher of KS3 English; teacher of KS3 & A Level History; teacher of KS3, GCSE & A Level Geography; deputy housemistress Leamington (boys) house; year 12 Leamington house tutor
2010-2011: As 2009-2010 & teacher of KS3 Classics & BTEC National Diploma PHSE; year 13 Leamington house tutor
2011-2012: Head of History Department - teacher of year 8, 10, 11, 12, 13 History; deputy housemistress Leamington house; year 9 Leamington house tutor

Tutoring Approach:

1-to-1 tutoring really is the most fantastic opportunity, but it only works if the programme fits the learner. My approach is, very simply, to provide a structured, sensible, and above all realistic programme which fits the needs of the individual. I have a wealth of resources including videos, pictures, cartoons and diagrams for those who are visual learners; there are very few things I like more than a debate or discussion and have plenty of interesting sources and questions that the auditory learners could use to engage me in one; for those who prefer to actively learn by taking a more 'hands on' approach I have collected a variety of different materials and have tried and tested several different activities.

Of course, sometimes pupils adopt different approaches to their learning at different times in their lives, or different approaches for different topics, or they like videos and pictures for one topic but can only really get to grips with discussing another - as such the first thing I aim to do is establish the strengths and weaknesses of a learner by using a range of different approaches in short activities covering a range of topics, and more simply by asking.

From there it's a case of drawing on that extensive bank of resources and preparing new ones that fit the individual pupil, keeping up to date with exam board news and syllabus updates, if necessary exam paper and mark scheme sessions, challenging but positive revision sessions or topic overviews, teaching of whole syllabus over longer periods of time, optimism and improvement in the pupil's work, constant communication with the pupil, dynamic and colourful lessons, and above all else (hopefully) an injection of passion for the subject and boost of self-confidence for the pupil.
