Personal Description:

I have a B.A. in French and Spanish from Vassar College in New York and a P.G.C.E from Cambridge University here in England.

After 20 years of working in the Performing Arts, I know something about communicating with people, and after 9 years of teaching French and Spanish to Y9-Y13 students in a state secondary school, I know a lot about teaching and learning a foreign language.

I met and was enchanted by Latin, French and Spanish before I was 14; at 19, I learned German; at 26 I had to learn Italian and now at 60, I'm learning Greek. The enchantment remains, and the challenge of acquiring another language with which to communicate still excites me - an excitement I try to convey to all my students.

Teaching Experience:

9 years of teaching French and Spanish to Y9-Y13 students in a state secondary school in Suffolk.
I have coached individuals privately (and very successfully!!) for GCSE and A Level, and I have taught adults who needed to learn the language as part of their plans for their future retirement.

Tutoring Approach:

Language is a powerful resource.
We use it to express our feelings, needs, likes, dislikes, hopes, dreams, doubts and fears; to communicate them with our families, friends, acquaintances, colleagues and people we meet in the street.
When speaking, reading or writing we use the sentence.
The structure of the sentence is grammar.
Grammar is to a language what the skeleton is to a body - the framework without which nothing can stand. It is the bedrock foundation on which all else is built. In any language.
So - my tutoring style and approach are based on learning a language through its grammar.
Talking a lot, and using humour, books, videos, newspapers, the Internet and your own desire to learn, I can help you to do really well in GCSE and/or A Level exams; to prepare for University; to improve on what you already know; or to learn the language from the very beginning.
