Keith - Battersea tutor
Information About Keith:
Personal Description:
I am 51 years old and have just returned from two years teaching in China, first as a Mathematics & Physics teacher on well-established foundation programmes, gaining Chinese students admission to UK and USA universities, later as Principal of a small international school. During 1990-2007 I was a lecturer at Imperial College London, where I also acted as a Senior Tutor, responsible for pastoral care, and UCAS admissions tutor. During 2005-2010 I taught for the Open University Mathematics faculty and worked as a private tutor in Mathematics and Physics. I hold an up-to-date Enhanced Disclosure Certificate from the DBS (formerly known as the CRB).
Teaching Experience:
20 years as a university lecturer in engineering and applied mathematics.
2 years as a high school teacher in China.
5 years as a private tutor.
Tutoring Approach:
I am a patient and very experienced professional teacher with a creative approach based on sound methods. "Creative" means finding ways to make the abstract more concrete, by means of practical example and appealing to the natural interests of the student. The "sound methods" are to instill basic principles of logic and a methodical approach whilst encouraging students to create their own way of learning the mathematical methods. When tutoring A level students, I normally spend a lot of time on exam practise, making extensive use of a large bank of past papers. Private tutoring is very different from classroom teaching - the key is to imagine oneself in the student's situation, having the patience to listen until it becomes clear what the learning issue is. Otherwise all one succeeds in doing is repeating what has already been said in the classroom, imposing on the student instead of discovering what works for her or him. I am used to teaching to a wide range of abilities and age ranges, from around 13 years of age to adult learners of 70 plus.
