Personal Description:

I am an experienced teacher and professional writer offering private tuition in English and other humanities subjects. My qualifications include a degree in English from Oxford University, and an MA and PhD in Philosophy from Essex University. I have taught English to GCSE and A level, and Philosophy in universities and colleges. I'm also a published author with considerable experience in journalism.

Based in Crystal Palace, South London, I generally teach students from Dulwich, Streatham, Beckenham, Croydon as well as Sydenham and Upper Norwood.

Teaching Experience:

I spent two years full-time in a secondary school, teaching English at all levels from 11 to 18, including Oxbridge entrance, and then taught GCSE English in further education. I have nearly a decade's experience as a lecturer in higher education, teaching Philosophy and Critical Thinking. Along the way, I have also taught English as a Foreign/Second Language and for Academic Purposes to a wide range of groups and individuals.

An experienced private tutor, I am familiar with the requirements of the main exam boards.

Tutoring Approach:

It's generally acknowledged that one-to-one teaching is a good way of promoting learning, but the key to making it really effective is tailoring tuition to the student's needs. Whether it's a matter of remedying gaps in knowledge or fast-tracking a bright pupil, my approach combines academic rigour with a genuine attention to the individual.

I aim to provide a thorough grounding in the subject, as well as developing the techniques needed for success in coursework and exams.

As a published writer with a background in secondary, higher and further education, I'm well-equipped to motivate students, showing them how the skills they are acquiring now will help them to realise their potential in future.

I find that an initial meeting with a student and, if appropriate, a parent (free of charge) is invaluable in establishing which direction a course of tuition should take.
