Richard John - Catford tutor
Information About Richard John:
Personal Description:
I'm a full-time, professional, qualified private tutor who's taught students at a wide variety of levels. My students see improved grades in exams and an increase in confidence and general understanding in their subject.
I have degrees in both literature and mathematics and a PhD in philosophy, and am the author of a well-received book for A Level students entitled "Studying Poetry". I have a PGCE (that is, I'm a qualified teacher). I also spent ten years outside teaching, writing computer software on City trading floors.
I'm intellectually excitable, a quality with which I hope to infect my students. Above all I aim to make my students autonomous learners with the ability to master their subject and an appreciation of why that's worth doing.
Teaching Experience:
I've taught English Literature and Philosophy at undergraduate degree level, and taught postgraduate students at the Cardiff School of Journalism. I've also taught mathematics to students from pre-GCSE to undergraduate levels, and to adult learners. Tuition is my main day-to-day work but I also currently teach an innovative geometry course at Central St Martin's (part of the University of London).
I studied at the Open University and have tutored several adults on their courses.
Tutoring Approach:
My sessions are interactive, exploratory and creative. I don't turn up with the same shrink-wrapped lessons for every student; I'll adapt to your personal needs, your specific goals and your own style of learning.
I'm especially experienced with GCSE, A Level and university mathematics. A balance between understanding the material and preparation for exams is essential, and my role is often to balance out the "production line" model of large-class teaching at schools and colleges.
I can also help with exam performance issues and study methods, including advanced techniques for memorization and speed reading.
