Robert - Leeds tutor
Information About Robert:
Personal Description:
Hello,
My name is Robert Frost and I am a highly sociable and keen Third Year Philosophy Student at the University of Leeds. Throughout the end of my school days and my university career so far, I have become increasingly interested in a wide spectrum of philosophical subjects. Now, I wish to specialize in the area of Personal Identity, the subject in which i will write my dissertation on, whilst continuing to take in other areas of the subject such as the Philosophy and Aesthetics of Art. Outside of Philosophy, I have also been very keen on art and music with my interests in art showing prominently during my school life, where i receive high A Grades, in both GCSE and A Levels.
Teaching Experience:
A few years ago, I used to be part of a teaching and reading scheme where a group of us would go to a primary school and help children in reading new texts and discussing what the book, chapter, or text was trying to say. In Addition to this, when in the Sixth Form at The Skinner's School, Tunbridge Wells, I became a Form Prefect, where i had the role of being a mentor and guide for the class of 12-13 year old boys. As a consequence of this, I was eager and quick to learn how to interact with these young students and also took the role of helping many of them with the subjects in which they struggled.
Furthermore I would like to express that I am very pasionate about the subjects that i am offering to teach. In addition to this, I am eager to teach and interact with any student and aim to not only make the experience useful, but also provoke a level of enjoyment for the student(s) that i will be teaching.
Tutoring Approach:
Philosophy - In philosophy it is key to make sure that we are not just covering facts. Instead, the emphasis on philosophy, especially within school exams, is on personal opinions based around the core philosophical issues. As a consequence, my approach when tutoring and teaching the subject will be to engage in conversation with the student and initiate debates as well as covering the thoughts put forward by he philosophers and texts that are relevant. In addition to this, my interest and passion for philosophy grew under the circumstances in which i was taught. Subjects within philosophy were made both more interesting relevant to my life and the life around us. This is something that i am keen to capture in my approach to teaching the subject.
Art - My approach in teaching art will be somewhat different to my approach with philosophy, as i feel the subject has to be mainly based around the students personal ideas and creativity. Consequently, i will begin by trying to get an understanding of the types of art that interest the student, be it fine art, photography, contemporary art, fashion and so forth, so that i can see where he/she is coming from. With this I will help to improve creative techniques but my main aim will be to broaden the artistic horizons of the student by introducing new artists, styles, ideas and so forth in addition to teaching the format of A level / GCSE art as a whole as it is these things that will help to obtain the higher grades in the subject. Whilst doing this i will also be constantly aware of how much the student is enjoying the work. If it becomes apparent that he/she has started to feel that it is dragging, i will always aim to bring something new and more interesting to the table.
