Being able to concentrate on the individual means lessons can be tailored exactly to meet the needs of the student. This allows the maximum increase in the student's confidence in the subject which is ultimately reflected in much improved exam performance. It is very rewarding to see this process.
I like to immediately identify and concentrate on any areas where the student has difficulty and develop strategies and methods with the student to overcome those difficulties.

I live in the Surrey Hills and am inspired by the landscape. However I am interested in picture making at all levels in any subject, believing that the subject is merely a reference point to an idea.
Art is largely subjective but is, like music, expressive of emotion, thought, ideas, and self.
I am an award winning artist having won the ArTTable Bronze Frame for my still life in 2015/

Adult Education at Ruxley Lane Centre, Epsom and at Reigate School of Art, Redhill.
Secondary Education at Carshalton High school for Girls.
University/Further Ed. at Hull, Norwich, Epsom, Falmouth, East Surrey College, Norwich and Croydon Colleges of Art.
I tutor as workshops individually in my Buckland studio, or individual tuition at the subjects' homes.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in clear demonstration of artistic principles and techniques and by guided practice by students. I am against the traditional style of art tutoring that simply allows the student to work with sometime critical comment 'over the shoulder'.
Art can be taught to a good technical level in the same way as any subject. Whilst everyone has natural ability to a degree, the student can learn to observe and record by training the eye and right brain. Many have no confidence in their ability. My aim is to give knowledge that inspires confidence so that a student may understand image making and learn to develop their own style through understanding of the principles of drawing, composition and creative expression.

Throughout my academic and research career I have developed a passion for chemistry and teaching and have been extensively involved in the tutoring and mentoring of students across a range of levels over many years. I have a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Bristol in addition to a 1st Class Masters Degree in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh. I am currently employed as a Senior Research Scientist in the North East with responsibilities including the training and mentoring of chemistry undergraduate students from a range of Universities.

Teaching Experience:

My passion for teaching started during my PhD where I taught practical and theoretical chemistry to numerous undergraduates, with particular focus on 1st year students struggling with key concepts to guide them through exams. Since then, I have continued to teach and mentor chemistry across a range of levels with particular focus on helping A-Level chemistry students struggling to get the grips with key concepts.

I adopt a systematic and logical approach to teaching using 'real-life' examples and models where ever possible to aid the students understanding and visualisation of the problems. Tutoring Approach:

The aim of my tuition lessons is 2 fold. Firstly it is to give my students a thorough understanding of the Mathematics modules/topics they are studying so that they are able to gain an excellent foundation in studying Mathematics or courses that have a substantial Mathematical content at a higher level. Secondly I give my students intensive and vigorous exam preparation so that they do extremely well in their examinations and achieve high grades. This is usually done by by doing many past papers under exam conditions. I also set my students difficult questions to complete (from many different sources and references). These questions are more difficult than what would normally appear in their actual exams. The purpose of making my students do these questions is so that they are totally prepared to tackle any questions that their exams or tests may throw at them.

Teaching Experience:

I teach German in school to children aged 6-10 and have given private lessons at all levels and to all ages, children, adolescents and adults, in both German and Arabic, for many years. My background is in interpreting and translation and I moved on to teaching from there. One of my long term Arabic students is now studying Arabic at university level, many of my other students have successfully completed GCSEs and A levels in both languages and/or gone on to use both languages for work or leisure purposes.

Tutoring Approach:

The emphasis is on the enjoyment of the learning process, I adapt the materials used to the individual needs of my students and everything is tailored to those needs. For children the emphasis is on learning through games, play and song, for adolescents and adults games and play may still form a part of the process. I have taught group and 1-1 lessons at English language schools and at home.

I aim to make my lessons fun, challenging and interactive, so my students leave each lesson feeling that they have achieved something. The content of the lessons comes mainly from the student and is always based on the student's needs. As a result, there is always a wide range of topics which we can look at in each lesson.

Lessons can be either 1-1 or groups, at my home or at the student's office / home.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is to ensure that each lesson is an enjoyable, creative and challenging experience for the student(s), and that different skills are practised. A wide variety of activities are used to ensure that the students remain engaged with and focused on the lesson aims. Where possible I let the students give me the language rather than 'feed' the language to them. The aim is always to give the students the space they need to learn, and to help them make the most of the learning opportunities presented in each lesson.

Having lived in London and South East England since then, our family moved to the Scottish Highlands in 2012, primarily to raise our children in a less chaotic and more natural environment. We've had no regrets at all...and our various dogs and cats are similarly happy with the move!

I have always been passionate about English, from the weekly spelling tests and grammar exercises of primary school to the privilege of being taught at A Level by Tolkien's grandson. His vibrant, interactive approach shaped my ongoing learning and fired my imagination. After leaving Edinburgh University with a Masters in English Language and Literature, I went on to take a TEFL qualification and used this when travelling abroad in Turkey and throughout the Caribbean. I am delighted that I continue to work in the area of EAL with overseas students in British schools, and that technology has allowed me to work with individuals in their home countries, via Skype.

My love of English directed my career, working first at the Royal Shakespeare Company before becoming an independent theatre producer in London, and a theatre advertising executive on accounts such as Andrew Lloyd Webber's 'Cats' and Cameron Mackintosh's 'Les Miserables'.

In 2008, my partner and I began the home education of our two children at primary stage. It was both challenging and inspirational and the experiences and knowledge I gained during those years - not purely academic, but also the different ways and methods of learning, the different developmental stages of children, the different learning styles of children - continue to inform my present day tutoring.

While home educating, and with my love of theatre, I founded an educational theatre group, Active Arts, with Margo Gunn, a teacher and director at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London. We worked with a wide age range of home educated and mainstream school children, providing workshops on various Shakespeare plays including 'Midsummer Night's Dream', 'The Tempest' and 'Romeo & Juliet'. Workshops were also designed specifically in support of GCSE/IGCSE work. As passionate advocates of Shakespeare, our approach was active and energetic, lifting Shakespeare off the page and introducing his plays, his language and his theatricality in an engaging and tangible manner. I was thrilled to be able to resurrect this work in the Highlands, initially at a local primary school, conducting 4 workshops for Primary 4-Primary 7, resulting in workshop presentations of 'The Tempest' and 'Macbeth'.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to home educating my two children and running Active Arts, my personal and professional lives led me into private tutoring and I have been a private tutor in English Language and Literature since 2009, working alongside children and young people from age 5 upwards, whether on general literacy issues, EAL or focusing specifically on exam work, from SATS, Nationals and GCSEs, through to A Levels, Highers and beyond. Tutees have been those in mainstream state schools, leading UK private schools and home education, following the English and Scottish curriculums, as well as IGCSEs with providers including Cambridge, OOL and Edexcel.

A number of my tutees have challenges such as Autism, ADHD, Tourette's and dyslexia, and the combination of experience, research and support courses have built my knowledge and understanding in these areas.

While I am registered with tutoring agencies, many of my tutees come via personal recommendation and I was delighted that tutees I had worked with in England chose to continue working with me via Skype after our move to Scotland.

Critically, I am PVG checked, and would be happy to provide evidence of this, together with references and qualification documentation.

Tutoring Approach:

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
My approach is not one of 'dip in and out' for an hour, or 'one size fits all', but of creating a relaxed, enjoyable, constructive atmosphere and building a relationship within which the young person's potential can be maximised, against a tailored, individual approach. While texts and challenges might be shared by various tutees, learning styles, atmospheres for learning, methods for learning, will always be different.
As importantly, my approach places great value on the parents, their involvement and their right and need for clear, ongoing and comprehensive communication. As such, I am often in regular contact with both my tutees and their parents, should they require it, outside of tutorials.

If you're looking for someone to ignite a love of English, to build confidence, to be energetic, to make learning enjoyable, active, off the page, accessible, then, here I am!

MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
For many young people with whom I work, English and everything to do with it - their texts, their homework, punctuation, close reading, writing an essay - is a minefield. Often, what holds them back is a mixture of low confidence, fear of getting it wrong, and simply not having grasped the 'map' of how to 'do it'.

One of my main motivations, is to make English accessible; to take away the fear factor, to provide clear and simple structures, to grasp some key exam techniques, to demystify the exam paper, to clarify what the heck the exam paper is testing them on; to remind tutees that they have, naturally, learned one of the most difficult languages in the world and are fully capable of expressing themselves on paper, under pressure and against time.

However whimsical it may sound, as with many things in life, self-belief and understanding are powerful tools for success.


MAKING ENGLISH ACCESSIBLE
The demand for private tutoring is growing exponentially. As The Telegraph reported in 2012, "more than a quarter of parents use private tutoring to supplement their children's education", spending "6bn a year in the UK." A double page spread in Femail, February 2015, states research that almost 1 in 4 children are now privately tutored, with pupils at private schools almost twice as likely to have private tutoring than those from state schools. Whatever explanation there is for this rise, cost to parents remains an obvious barrier to its provision.

I am, of course, a 'business', but I also firmly believe that access to tutoring should be made as wide as possible; education is a right and not a privilege. As such, while I have a standard rate for 1-1 tutoring, I am also very happy to discuss your requirements with you and to look at options available, such as small group tutoring where the cost per head can be significantly reduced.

I'm a hard-working, results-driven, positive individual interested in working with children and young people as it wasn't long ago I was in their exact position in GCSE and A-Level. Growing up I wanted to be a secondary school PE teacher, but due to limited places on PGCE's nowadays, and more positive experiences as a teaching assistant, I am now considering becoming a teaching assistant, or continuing a primary school based coaching project that I'm currently taking part in in university.

Teaching Experience:

I have coached children since aged 14 in a range of sports to try and help them develop a variety of interpersonal skills, and skills and qualities in the sports.
Between the age of 16-18 I ran an after-school netball club in primary schools to develop a team and take them to competitions.
After leaving 6th form I continued going in to primary schools with my secondary school teacher, assisting her in leading sessions for the children.
During university, I completed work placements working as a teaching assistant in London.
I also worked on a project for university in taking sports and nutrition in to primary schools to relieve teachers of their PE lessons.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to be as easy-going and laid-back as I can be in my approach, I listen to what the child has to say and I help them and try to ease their knowledge out of them with a variety of questions. Its a self-discovery/self-guided approach using Mosston's Spectrum of teaching. For example, I'd ask them questions based on a particular topic or question they need to be able to answer, which leads them to figure out the correct answers themselves, etc. Not only will I use a self-discovery route, but when necessary I'd provide information and knowledge that I know in order to help them achieve their potential.

I am a professional, conservatoire trained, theatre director, drama and LAMDA teacher based in London. My greatest strengths are my creativity on stage, ability to manage and communicate with people and to generally be an effective leader of different age groups, from Age 5 to Age 65.

My theatre voyage stydying MFA Theatre Directing at East 15 Acting School provided Jacques Lecoq puppet, clown and physical training and core modules examining Shakespeare, musical theatre, opera, comedy, contemporary British writing and actor training which has informed my practice as a teacher and director.

A huge part of my study was on theatre of the East, where I visited Bali, Indonesia for one term to study at Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI Denpasar). Here I had intensive training on forms such as Topeng Masked Dance, Legong Dance, Wayang Kulit and an introduction to Balinese Hinduism and performance cultures along with the opportunity to collaborate with actors, directors and filmmakers, and world-famous industry professionals.

I believe my administrative experience, my sales and marketing capabilities, together with my teaching and theatre qualifications with a healthy dose of imagination and a playful nature have all added to my effectiveness as an director, accomplished administrator, communicator and good all rounder.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked consistently in London theatres and in schools over the last 7 years and most recently have been working as the Artistic Director of Fusion Theatre Company, a company I founded, developing shows, workshops, education packs and training programs for pupils and teachers linking with National Curriculum Topics in order to utilise drama as a tool for learning. Most recently I have set up a LAMDA training section of the company, offering group sessions, duologue and monologue sessions for primary and secondary school.

Although I do the majority of my work within Theatre in Education and drama training, I also am currently the Associate Director of Maverick Theatre, whos mandate is to create reimaginations of classic literature in unexpected places.

Prior to setting up my own company, I was an assistant director, teaching assistant and technical operator at Trent College, for a number of shows, abridging and cutting scripts, marketing the school's productions, organising the shared diary and assisting with general curriculum work, organising year 9 classes and office administration. During that time I also worked as a LAMDA teacher with 14 students of my own, all of whom successfully achieved Grades 2 and 3 at the end of the summer term. During my second year I was given the opportunity to direct my own productions, as well as a substantial pay increase. I directed a sixth form production of "Two" by Jim Cartwright, followed by The Sixth Form Review [a comedy sketch show], a production of "Shakers" by John Godber, and a production of "Equus" by Peter Shaffer, and finally an outdoor theatre production of "A Midsummer Night's Dream" with a year 7 group. Two years of hands-on experience in education taught me the fundamental rules of theatre, production, discipline and how to motivate others to give their best performance.

Theatre plays a vital role in education to nurture and create opportunities for young people, using the arts as a vehicle to understand the world they live in and the people they are as well as develop crucial life skills. I believe that the most effective way to learn is through theatre and performance and because of this I have an incredible love for youth theatre and working with children and find it extremely rewarding.

Since my study, I have been doing workshops and acting courses with students from University upwards. Whether it be a specific genre of theatre or audition pieces.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is completely guided by the person I am working with. My natural instincts as a teacher are to get the student to relate to the material as well as they can by giving them something to compare it with in their own life. As a student of LAMDA since age five and from my extensive experience as a tutor throughout my career I discovered that by adopting a personal approach to teaching and mentoring, identifying the individual strengths of each student, and harnessing and working with those strengths, I was able to yield some incredible results not just within primary and secondary school but utilising this practice for all ages.
