Personal Description:
I'm a 42-year old graduate of the excellent University of Sussex languages course with a First Class Honours degree in French and Russian. I lived for four years in Paris where I mastered the language and the accent!

As well as language studies, my course encompassed literature from the 16th to the 20th centuries and history, society and politics since the French Revolution - subjects I am therefore qualified to talk about with some authority.

I like to stay abreast of French culture and society and am catching up with some novels I didn't get to read at university (most recently Georges Perec's wonderful <i>La Vie, mode d'emploi</i>)

Teaching Experience:

I have now been privately tutoring students at all levels for 6 years covering most UK exam boards at GCSE KS3 and KS4, AS and A2-level, and I have also helped prepare older students for the DELF.

Recent successes include steering a young lady through her DELF B1 exam with a 92.5% mark and an 11-year old girl passing her selective school entrance exam.

Here are some comments from a couple of clients - originals available on request.

<i>"Thank you so much for all your patient hard work - you taught her exactly the right stuff and there is no way she could have done it without you! I really didn't think it was possible to teach the whole year 7 curriculum in a week but somehow you managed it.

"Tiffin Girls is one of the top state schools in the country and rather competitive. Chatting to the other parents outside the exam, most of the competitors went to good independents or had been tutored over a long period of time. <b>You really knew not only what to teach but how to teach it, which shows you have exceptional skills.</b>"</i> - Anoushka (pupil's mother)

<i>"Just thought I should let you know I got an A! Thanks for all your help"</i> - Helena (A-level student)

Tutoring Approach:

It is important to tailor lessons specifically to a student's needs, but my general method is to engage him or her at a level just above their 'comfort zone'. Learning is about challenging yourself to do better, and it is crucial for a tutor to be supportive and encouraging, and also to keep the bar high.

Lessons can be conducted entirely in French, or in a mixture of English and French. I can work alongside a student's existing course (that is, from a textbook a student is already following), or we can use course books that I recommend.

Where the level allows, I like to draw upon material from contemporary sources such as French news magazines.

For "conversation classes", I find it is useful to base the discussion on an article or a book to help build vocabulary, and also think that incorporating grammar instruction (where appropriate) can be a good idea.

Note that hourly rates are based on the student travelling to my home. If you require tutoring at your own home or office, there is an extra charge per lesson, dependent on distance travelled. Please contact me for more details!

Personal Description:
I am a young actor living in London. I also write and direct poetry, plays and films. As my father was a Diplomat I spent much of my early life abroad: in Cuba, Hungary and the United States.

After studying Maths, English and Russian at Eton College I spent a year studying acting in New York and cooking in an English restaurant, then studied English and Drama at Bristol and have just finished a BA in Acting at LAMDA. When I'm not writing or in the theatre I'm in the kitchen experimenting.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored several students over the past two years in London. I have helped with English A-Level papers for a boy who got an A grade and will start at Bristol this autumn. I also taught essay-writing and exam technique to a girl who will be starting medicine at Cambridge this autumn.

I also have a lot of experience with learning difficulties as I have helped my younger brother all his studying life through his asperger's and dyslexia.

Tutoring Approach:

My inspiration to work in the arts always came from the books, films, artists and languages I studied at school and at university so I have a great amount of passion and interest in what I teach.

I believe this is very much the most important lesson for any new student to learn: a personal enjoyment and motivation for the subject. Exams are everywhere these days but it is important to remember that an exam is only a method for determining how much you know and if you can find yourself genuinely excited and eager to discuss what you know you are half-way to passing that exam.

Personal Description:
Hi there,

My name is Jean-Charles. I am a 29-year-old French male. I have been living, studying and working in the UK for more than two years. I worked as a chef two years ago, as a French assistant last year and as a trainee-teacher this year when studying the PGCE French with Spanish. I am now a qualified teacher and I work in a comprehensive school near Reading.
Before coming to the UK, I studied philosophy and French language and literature at the Université de Strasbourg. I have a very good knowledge of French literature and grammar and it has been very helpful to my past tutees.

I am easy-going and I adapt myself easily. One of my favourite hobbies is speaking foreign languages and discovering new cultures.

Teaching Experience:

In Reading:
I have been teaching French in a comprehensive school to pupils aged from 11 to 18.

In Liverpool:
I have been tutoring a mature student to improve her speaking from January 2012.
As part of my PGCE, I taught French from Y7 to Y13 and Spanish up to Y9 from October 2011 to 2012.

In Grimsby:
As a French assistant, from November 2010 to May 2011, I helped primary and secondary students with their French on a one-to-one basis, in small groups and I also taught lessons to whole classes.

In Bolton:
I taught French language -grammar and literature- to a mature-student retired from teaching from October 2009 to March 2010. (testimonial available)

In Strasbourg:
I gave lessons in French to a 16-year-old girl in Strasbourg in the summer 2010.
I also helped two primary school pupils with their homework from 2007 to 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

As I strongly believe that languages and cultures come together, I always strive to work on authentic material and I also give my tutees many opportunities to learn in out of tution context in order to develop their cultural knowledge.

However, for me the most important in teaching is to meet the needs of learners. Therefore, my priority is first of all to assess the needs of my tutees. Tutees may want to develop only some of the 4 skills: speaking, listening, reading, or writing, depending on the use they want to make of French. They also may have particular topics they want to work on, functions of their needs, projects or tastes.

This student-led approach must be carried on throughout the lessons. The role of the tutor is to maximise opportunities for the learner to discover things by themselves because this is the most efficient and enjoyable way to learn.

Last but not least, languages are interesting and fun at the same time. They develop thinking skills as well as they provide entertainment. My tutoring reflects this philosophy. This is why I always try to alternate entertainment and thinking time during the lessons.

Vladimir (A level Student)

Tutoring Approach:

I use books, handouts,CDs,games, newspaper articles among other resources such as past papers for exam preparations.

Very often, many people's only previous experience of learning a language has been at school, where a great deal of emphasis was placed on reading and writing a language with the purpose of passing an examination. However, teaching approaches to modern language training have changed enormously in recent years, and as a result, learning a language is now a lot more fun and a far more rewarding experience!
Languages are now widely taught using a method known as the Communicative Approach or Direct Method, whereby the teacher conducts the session almost entirely in the target language regardless of the student's level. While it may take getting used to initially, the method has proven to be highly effective and is adopted by language training organisations around the world.

Personal Description:
Bonjour,

My name is Julie and I am a native French speaker. I was born and raised in the French speaking part of Belgium and lived in France for a couple months. I am currently a doctoral student in Ancient History at Oxford University. I hold a Master of Arts in History from the Université Libre de Bruxelles and a Master of Arts in Classics from Stanford University, USA.

Passionate about the mechanics of language, I am also proficient in Dutch, Latin, Greek and currently learning Modern Greek. In my spare time I like doing improvisational comedy, traveling, yoga and running.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring French for a year in Oxford, for all levels from primary school to adult casual learners.

The results achieved so far are very positive. My beginners students are able to speak basic French from scratch, and my A-levels students achieved very good results at their examinations.

Tutoring Approach:

My line of approach is that one learns a lot more when they enjoy learning. Hence, I am using a lot of different teaching strategies to make you enjoy the class while learning durably French grammar and vocab. Usually, the lessons are divided in two parts: one more focused on the rules (grammar, conjugation) and the other on practice with readings and discussions about French and francophone culture, role plays, listening to an intervention or music lyrics, etc. Then again, this will depend on your needs and current level.

I am flexible regarding the schedule of the class and content of the teaching, which means that we can spend time focussing on something that you particularly want to learn or practice.

Most importantly, I value progress at the right pace: I want to make sure the class fits your level and that you feel that you are evolving from class to class. Whatever your goal is, we will reach it together. Beginners to advanced students in French are more then welcome. All is tailored to the tutee's needs.

*** Teaching will resume in mid-September ***

Personal Description:
I graduated with a 2:1 in Middle Eastern Studies and Arabic from Cambridge University in 2010. The course included modules in history, politics, literature, and religious studies, as well as Arabic language. I spent the third year of my studies living in Damascus, Syria, and speak the Syrian dialect, as well as having a solid grounding in Modern Standard grammar.

My A-levels were in English Literature, Philosophy & Ethics, French, and History (AAAB), and I also took an AS-level in Spanish (A). I have lived in France and Spain and speak both French and Spanish to a high level of fluency. I was also raised bilingual with English and Italian.

Teaching Experience:

In addition to tutoring family friends in Italy over the summer holidays (in English), I've exchanged English and Spanish lessons for Arabic lessons. I also taught English to two groups of 20+ Arab teenagers at a high school in Israel from September - December 2012.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in cultivating a vigorous work ethic in students, which is best done through close supervision and encouragement. The work covered will involve both the curriculum required by the student's course as well as helpful extras tailored to the student's abilities and personality. I will provide these extras to increase the student's understanding of the subject and help him/or her reach a standard of excellence that will be noticed by teachers and examiners alike.

I find the most common problem students have is not with the subject itself, but with the teacher or the insufficient attention they get in the classroom. A stress-free but diligent approach will allow us to build trust, which will give the student renewed confidence in his or her abilities. Students who push themselves with me will be rewarded for their hard work by realising that the subject they once dreaded is actually really enjoyable when approached from a new angle.

I am a 22 year old who is currently working at RWS translations group in Chalfont St Peter. I have recently graduated from Durham University with a 2.1 BA in Modern Languages (French and Italian). I also studied Spanish up to 2nd year. I enjoy speaking different languages and try to pass on my enthusiasm for languages to others.

Teaching Experience:

My third year at University was spent abroad. I chose to teach in France for 7 months in two primary schools which I very much enjoyed. I loved to chat to the children and try to get them to see the importance of learning English. I also au-paired for three months in Italy during my Year Abroad, which involved private lessons with a 7 year old. I have also previously tutored French, which included exam preparation, focusing on problematic areas and improving confidence. I understand how difficult languages can be, I believe I can sympathise with the student. The lesson must be fun and the student needs to understand the importance of learning a language, in order to be enthusiastic about it.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe languages are crucial in education. Throughout university I took part in Routes into Languages, a consortium of universities working together with schools and colleges, to enthuse and encourage people to study languages. This role involved planning taster classes for small groups, introducing a new language into their education and broadening their knowledge of the world and different cultures. I particularly enjoyed this role as I was enable to communicate the importance of languages and perhaps inspire some of the children to carry languages on past year 9.

Personal Description:
I am a native speaker of both Spanish and English (raised and educated in Spain by English parents and educated to university level in the UK) with experience tutoring. I am culturally as well as linguistically fluent in both English and Spanish, as well as well-read in both. I have studied French to university level and Art to A-level, already having a preexisting understanding of art due to both my parents being professional artists and amateur art historians themselves. Being a tutor in languages and literature, I am very skilled with language and linguistics and am able to teach a variety of writing styles.
I have tutored a variety of students across my subjects, from preschool children needing an introduction to Spanish to adult learners seeking to improve their English, to students who wanted to better their written communication.

Teaching Experience:

I have accumulated 3 years of private tutoring so far, I have worked as part of a Cardiff-based tutoring company and I have worked on a part-time basis with several companies (including a law firm) translating documents and letters.

Tutoring Approach:

I offer a variety of courses at different levels and for a range of skills.

For languages:
-A basic lesson-plan for young children (2-5), where they learn through games and immersion.
-A more structured plan for children of primary-school age, where they learn grammar and structure in a traditional approach, still kept fun.
-A support course for students studying Spanish for GCSE or A-level. This is appropriate for both students who need to catch-up and students who have the potential to progress faster.
-A brief support course for students approaching their exams, to ensure they are confident in the subject. I am very familiar with these exams as I have taken them myself (obviously achieving A*s).
-A beginners' course for all ages.
-An intermediate course for all ages.
-An advanced course for all ages.
-A fast-track course in Spanish for travelers and tourists.
-And a conversational course for those seeking to improve their pronunciation, fluency and ease of speech.

For literacy/writing skills:
-A beginners' course for all ages.
-An intermediate course for all ages.
-An advanced course for all ages.
-A business course.
-A students' course.
-A creative writing course.

For art:
-A skills-based course for beginners.
-An intermediate skills-based course.
-An art history and skills-based course.
-A support course for GCSE or A-level students of Art.

Personal Description:
My name is Oliver and I am a 22-year-old student at the University of Warwick, where I study German & History joint honours. I have recently returned from my year abroad in Germany, where I studied not only German language and literature, but also history and French language at the Humboldt University in Berlin. I would describe myself as enthusiastic and friendly.

Teaching Experience:

Between January and June 2012 I volunteered through Warwick Volunteers at a school in Coventry, where I acted as a teaching assistant in a Year 8 French class. I furthermore tutored a then first-year student at the University of Warwick during this time period. She was interested in improving her German language from GCSE-level and so we met for an hour every week in the university library. During the lessons we not only focused on grammar, but also on texts which I provided to widen vocabulary and to understand sentence structure in a real context.

Tutoring Approach:

For me it is important that the tutoring can either be as relaxed or as focused as the student wants it to be. We all have our own individual ways of learning and retaining information, so it is key to understand best how the student learns when approaching a topic. It is also good when students think for themselves, rather than simply soaking up information, and so I tend to encourage this kind of self-sufficiency in learning. I encourage debate and get students to justifying their reasoning and thought, skills which are not only useful for the future but also are more engaging for students.

Personal Description:
I am a native French speaker. I am friendly, approachable, patient and non-judgmental. I am passionate about French and English literature. I speak and write a good standard of English and French. I have successfully completed the course PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector) (Level 4) at Strode College, Somerset. This is really useful in my role as a tutor.
I studied Philosophy and French literature up to the Baccalauréat in Brittany. I graduated in Brest University where I passed a degree (Deug) in English and American literature, English Grammar, linguistics, Phonetics, translation from English into French and vice-versa. The degree also included American and English History. I have the level of Licence in the same fields as above. I have an up-to-date DBS certificate ( May 2013).

Teaching Experience:

I have been a private tutor for over two years now and enjoy this very much. I help teenagers improve their grades for GCSE French and successfully prepare for A levels. My experience involves working with adult and teenage students. Sessions are tailored to the specific needs of students such as someone needing to speak French for work. In the school year 2014, I have helped students prepare for their GCSE. This involves explaining from scratch the main points of grammar and guiding their pronunciation so students can perform better for oral and listening exams. At the moment, June 2014, I am helping a student study the novel Madame Bovary more in depth. This is in preparation for the entry to University. This involves weekly sessions where I prepare questions in French for my student. I expect the student to prepare answers in French. We discuss in French the style of the novelist, the main themes, the protagonists, the plot etc. I spend time carefully preparing sessions with the view of increasing the fluency of students. In the course of the school year 2012-2013 I taught English (via skype) to one of my nieces and she achieved good grades in English for her Baccalaureat. At the same time, I also helped an A level student to study Madame Bovary by Gustave Flaubert. I chose excerpts from the novel and prepared questions for the student. When we met, in addition to going through the prepared questions and analysis, I focused on the pronunciation, grammar and spelling plus vocabulary. I truly enjoy seeing my students improve their confidence in spoken and written French. I can help adults brush on their French or learn the language from a beginner's level up to an advanced level.
One of my students from Wales, Anne wrote: I would highly recommend Annie as a tutor to anyone learning French. She really knows her stuff - not just as a native French speaker but as a teacher who is tuned in to where a learner has problems and knowledge gaps. She is very helpful in supplying the information that you don't get in the textbooks and in providing insights into both written and spoken French. Add to that friendliness and a sense of humour and you have everything you could ask for in an expert language tutor.
Rosie from Wells, Somerset: 'Annie is a very good French teacher, she is kind, smart, patient. My French has improved just after a few lessons and I really look forward to our next session together'.
The following is a comment by another student,Neil:' Our conversational French sessions are focused but flexible. Either of us can suggest a topic to talk about and we have covered a wide range of subjects. Annie writes a lot of useful notes as we go along. I take these away and regularly refer to them, they are great for revision. I like the fact that Annie can tell me what the French would really say as opposed to what it says in the dictionary. Importantly, we enjoy a laugh'.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to discuss with my students to know exactly what the students want to get from the lessons. I keep in mind that each student has different goals and motives to learn the language. I draw a learning plan to guide the students and myself. My tutoring sessions are tailor-made as students are different with different learning styles. I think it is important that students make progress and for this I think it is also important that the atmosphere be pleasant so I do like it when my students are enjoying their learning and progressing.

I like to focus on the pronunciation so students can be understood properly by French native speakers. It does make things easier for students when they travel to France or if they want to work there, for instance. I focus on the pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary and spelling. I truly enjoy seeing my students improve their confidence in spoken and written French, I also provide tips regarding modern spoken French. While tutoring to beginners, I find that it is important to offer to students a good grasp of grammar as this enables students to start constructing little useful sentences on their own. I correct students on their pronunciation to give them a good start. I am aware that everyone is different and consequently I tend to teach according to the needs of each student. I have an up-to-date DBS certificate ( May 2013).

Personal Description:
I am French-Swiss and I am fluent in both French and English. I have recently moved to Nottingham after 6 years in Manchester.

Teaching Experience:

Although I do not have any formal French teaching experience, my French is of an exceptional level as I am a native speaker with the equivalent of French A levels obtained in a French speaking country. I would have no difficulties tutoring students in French.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe there is no substitute for learning a language from a native speaker; tutees would be immersed in a French speaking environment from the minute they walk through the door.

I will tailor each lesson to the tutee individual needs with a high emphasis on their weakest areas.

If approaching exam period, I would generally go over many past papers in order to fully train tutee to get the best grade possible.

Personal Description:
My name is Milena, I am a 23yo French national. I moved to the UK four years ago to study. Before coming to Durham to do a Masters degree on Risk and Security, I studied Politics, Philosophy and Economics at Lancaster University. Back in France, I attended an international school in Grenoble where I obtained a French international baccalaureate.

I have always been enthusiastic about learning languages: after eight years of studying Spanish, I am now learning Arabic. Getting to discover British culture through the prism of language was a genuinely exciting experience for me, so I hope I can help people on their journey to learn French!

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching both English and French. In France, I spent a summer teaching English to two kids (5 and 9). I also successfully prepared an 18 year old student for an English competitive examination. At Lancaster, I gave tuitions to a few students learning French casually or for their French degree (reference available on request).

Tutoring Approach:

The variety of my past teaching experiences made me understand that adaptability is key. Hence, I prefer meeting informally before tutoring, in order to assess the tutee's needs and desires. I know that learning the grammatical basis can be daunting, so I like to keep my tuitions varied with an introduction to French culture.
