About Jay:
Hello everyone,

I am a private tutor with a degree in Economics and Finance from one of UK's top universities. I have also recently qualified as an Accountant. I achieved a Distinction in my dissertation and for most of my project work. Hence I can be of great help particularly to students during their coursework and dissertation stages.

I am able to help students by breaking difficult techniques into step-by-step methods that are easy to follow, together with a sound understanding of the underlying concepts. I am able to test my students' understanding by setting my own original questions tailored to the current level of each particular student.

As tutoring is my profession, I have taught many more students than a part-time evening tutor would have, and hence I have a great deal of teaching experience.

I offer a range of teaching services in addition to 1-to-1 lessons.

Please contact me by email

Thanks!

Jay

About Nick:
I enjoy helping people to use their computer to do what they want to do for business or pleasure. So this could be working with a digital camera, setting up an invoice or creating a web page.
My knowledge of computing comes from taking part in various training courses as well as personal experience. I have written for national computer magazines and I am a fully qualified adult teacher.

Teaching Experience:

I have given private computer tuition for more than 10 years. I have also taught groups of adults at a further education college and in various community centres and business settings.
I have taught both accredited and non-qualification courses in many computer subject areas including: word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet & email, digital photography.

Tutoring Approach:

No two learners are alike. So I like to start where the learner is and help them progress where they want to go. No question is too silly. My aim is to build confidence as we seek answers together.

About Cheng:
I am seventeen years old, holding a deferred place at Cambridge university for Natural Sciences (Physics). I have just graduated from Lenzie Academy, and I want to spend a year exploring the world. This includes teaching - to be able to pass knowledge on to others, and see that sparkle in their eyes, I look forward to it greatly.

Teaching Experience:

Although I certainly have no official teaching qualifications, I have always enjoyed, and often succeeded, in teaching others. My classmates say they treat my as more of an authority than my teachers - but I do not wish to come across like that. In all my subjects across Mathematics, Chemistry and Physics, I find the content to be not so consicely and clearly taught. And so I made my own notes - which can be as short as 10 pages for an entire subject - that I find to be all that one needs to ace at the exams, and indeed properly digest the syllabus. Indeed, my friends agreed that what seemed so daunting was deep down so simple and sometimes elegant - that they think my explanation was not even that important! I smile at that, of course, happy that they comprehend and not memorise. I have also helped my mother to go back into education, by showing her that A level/Higher mathematics is not as complex as she thought.

Tutoring Approach:

It is simple - I focus on understanding, and skills of analysis. At Advanced higher level at least, the easiest way to achieve an A is not even exam orientated teaching, in my opinion - because there are really not so many fundamental concepts to master (except in pure mathematics). I ask them to forget the "tricks" that they have been taught, and give them, in full honesty and clarity, the firm foundations from the beginning. These are both the deep rooted concepts, as well as methods of analysis. Further on in the teaching then, I would find that they can pick up things so quickly, so self-initiated and renewed with confidence - they do not even need my help a lot of the times!

About Matthew:
Easy going and very informal, I have been working in the Web Design and Web Software industry from my own company since graduating from Loughborough university with a Masters in Electronic and Software engineering. Still based in Loughborough, I have quite a broad range of knowledge and like to use commonplace analogies to try to break complex abstract concepts into more readily understandable ideas, rather than preaching textbook theory. I am patient and don't often move forward until I am certain that the student has acquired a fundamental grasp of the concept in question.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst I have no direct experience within the UK eduction system, I have had to develop a broad range of teaching skills to facilitate working with clients in industry. This often involves educating the client regarding all aspects of the systems they are purchasing, through to training them either online or on-site in how to maintain and operate their new software and infrastructure.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very open and informal approach to teaching, often preferring to be asked questions that lead to discussion and revelation, rather than lecturing on a subject. I work best when working with a student to tackle a particular issue, often sidetracking to explore different topics en route to the goal.

About Abbie:
Current university student, studying Information Systems Analysis (Computer Science/IT) in Bristol. I was brought up in the South of Spain, studying at an International College, following the UK curriculum.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no professional experience in this field, during my AS and A-level years I spent my "free periods" tutoring younger children within the school. This included helping young children learn to read, acting as a teacher's help in classes, and taking some GCSE IT classes for students needing extra help. I have also taken on the responsibility of "Science is Fun" days held annually at the school.

Tutoring Approach:

I've always found that you learn best from the teacher's you can actually connect with. Each student will have their own way of learning to their best ability, it's the tutor's position to discover which way is best for the student.

About Sarah:
I'm about to go into my final year at university in Sheffield. My degree is French and Russian and I've spent the last year living and studying in both France and Russia. Other than learning languages I enjoy playing and listening to music, reading, travelling and socialising. I'm friendly, approachable and hard-working.

Teaching Experience:

I spent 3 weeks working with secondary school pupils in June 2007 in Sheffield, mostly in the French department. I had to work with a variety of groups and abilities. I also did working experience in a primary school in November 2002. While I was living in France I spent a couple of hours a week teaching English to French school children.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very much dependent on the tutee; I am more than happy to cater for their needs and learning styles and take my lead from them.

About Louise:
I am 30 years old and work as a freelance theatre director and solicitor. I worked in the busy commercial litigation department of a city law firm for 6 years from 2001 to 2007 and last year retrained as a theatre director at Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. I am keen to continue my interest in law and English Literature alongside my freelance work in the theatre.

Teaching Experience:

I am new to tutoring, having previously worked as a lawyer and then retrained as a theatre director. I am looking forward to continuing my interest in the law by tutoring alongside my freelance theatre work, which also builds on the English Degree I took when I first began directing plays in the theatre at university.

Tutoring Approach:

I understand that sometimes school and university classes need supplementing with extra coaching, and am happy to provide help either by email on in person, on specific areas of difficulty or with more general skills. Having trained as a lawyer just 5 years ago and recently having taken Bristol Old Vic's course in theatre directing last year, I have recent experience of being tutored myself and will do my best to make learning as interesting and collaborative as possible.

About Leanne:
I love to teach.
I have taught for over 12 years. I have not tired of seeing a child grow in confidence through achieving the smallest of tasks (that may well seem huge to them!).

Teaching Experience:

I currently teach in a highly successful Private School in Kent where I lead ICT as a subject coordinator.
Previous to that I have worked in Kent Primary Schools, again leading ICT for 6 years.
I have also taught in New Zealand for 6 years and trained and grew up in Australia where I gained a degree and diploma in Education.
I have QTS status for England and a current CRB check with reliable references.

Tutoring Approach:

It is very important to create a rapport with a child in order to have them feel confident and at ease. I do this first.

I believe I can help many children with their learning issues by breaking a task down and combining it with:
-using a variety approaches and explanations',
-a variety of media (such as computers and more traditional methods) and
-my many years of experience

About Helen:
I am a current undergraduate reading History at Somerville college in Oxford University. As well as offering tution in my academic subjects I am therefore able to offer help in preparing for the Oxbridge entrance process including the HAT, interview and personal statement.

Teaching Experience:

I have helped my younger sister and friends with their work and revision over the last year and during sixth form. I have lots of experience of working with children so am patient and a good communicator.

Tutoring Approach:

I know from experience that different people learn in different ways so use a number of teaching methods. These include oral and visual presentations, rhyme and repition, games and quizes, formal testing and writing practice answers. I passionately believe that all children can reach their full potential if they have the right motivation behind them but more importantly the self-confidence in their ability. I also think that as far as possible learning should be a fun and enjoyable experience rather than purely something based on exams and results.

About Kevin:
I am a conscientious and well-organised teacher, who always aims to prepare pupils for examinations as well as possible through comprehensive and thorough revision.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught Mathematics and Statistics at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A level for the last fifteen years. I think it is important to give pupils confidence in their abilities by planning learning carefully and giving as many opportunities as possible for pupils to apply their knowledge. I am also an Examiner for Mathematics and Statistics

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that it is important to be flexible and adapt my approach to the pupil's needs. It is important to identify any areas of weakness, and focus on these areas, so that improvements can made. I also like to focus on the key topics, so that pupils gain a high level of confidence in thgier abilities.

About Sarah:
I hold an Honours Degree in Environmental Biology. I have the education and experience to teach most science related subjects.

Teaching Experience:

I have been working on a self-employed basis since graduation, offering private tuition to friends, family and their children. In addition, I am registered with a tutoring agency whereby a CRB check has been carried out.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a very patient and understanding person. My approach is to take a subject and study in small sections over a period of time. I believe that a student can become very overwhelmed with science. I therefore believe in structuring study at a very steady pace during the course of a week.

About Lola:
I am a third year Bioengineering student at Imperial College London. I previously attended Roedean School for Girls in Brighton where I completed my A-levels. For my A-levels, I took Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology and A's in all my subjects for both my AS and A-levels. My engineering course is very diverse, and so I am still doing these subjects though on a higher level.

Teaching Experience:

I worked as a teaching assistant at Gunnersbury School London in 2007. Where I assisted students from year 7 all the way up to year 11 with Mathematics. I tutor Bioengineering students (in the younger years) ad libitum at Imperial College London.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to modify my teaching technique to suit the student that I am working with, and depending on the subject that I am teaching. Being a current student myself, I am very aware of the problems that students face with getting their voices heard in the classroom, and centre my tutoring around the student. I encourage students to be the best that they can be because I believe that anything is possible with the right amount of help, and if you put your mind to it!

About Kodo:
I am a freelancing pianist/musician, working mainly as a performer and a piano/theory teacher. I have a Bachelor and Masters Degree in Music with Distinction, and I have been awarded several prizes and awards as a performer at both national and international level.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a peripatetic theory and piano tutor in schools, and I also teach pupils privately on a regular basis.

Tutoring Approach:

My main approach is to make the lessons as enjoyable and interesting as possible, because this is really what drives them forward to want them to know more.
In the case of teaching piano for example, I always try to find the pupils' taste in music so that I can cater for their tastes and bring materials that they would enjoy playing.

About Amanda:
I am a Fine Art Graduate and practising artist living in Redland, Bristol willing to offer support, advice and tutoring to GCSE and A-Level ar students, whether it be preparing for the art exam or wanting some extra help with the big workload which is coursework.

I remember very well being overwhelmed by the amount of sketchbooks, critical appraisals and time which had to go into my coursework at school and making every bit count for those extra marks. After being through the mill with A-levels, a foundation course in art & design and a degree in fine art I will be able to offer some advice and help whether it be with practical techniques such as drawing or with critical analysis to try and help you figure out which direction your work is going.

Teaching Experience:

I have previously been a mentor to secondary level students (year 7) who had just started school, offering them support and a sympathetic ear within the school environment. This role was during my time at school and one which helped the students to intergrate into their new surroundings and voice any problems they had to someone other than a teacher.

I run my own part-time jewellery design business which has been established for over a year.

Tutoring Approach:

My main practice is heavily focused on drawing and I use methods such as printmaking and textiles to create my work. I have a strong background in drawing, particuarly life drawing, which I still enjoy doing.

I am also happy to discuss work and offer practical criticism as well as dealing with contentual issues relating to art work based on art theory and history. I have a current and up to date knowledge of the current art scene and reguarly take visits around the UK to keep myself in the loop.
