View Katherine's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Katherine: I am a recent graduate of Edinburgh University, with a BSc. (Hons) in maths. I am a full time maths maths tutor. I am willing to travel to your home to teach, and have an enhanced disclosure. |
Teaching Experience: I have been a professional tutor for one year, having enjoyed working part time as a tutor previously. In the past two years, I have tutored over 20 students, and seen an improvement not only in their grades, but also in their confidence and enjoyment of the the subject. I have helped pupils with a predicted grade of a 5 realise a final grade 2 at Standard Grade, after just 5 months of tuition. I have also tutored at both Wallace College and Basil Paterson College, running Easter revision courses for groups of up to 8 students at a time, at Standard Grade and Higher level. While most of my private tutoring is in the students home, I have also tutored within the school setting at Castlebrae High School, and I spent a couple of weeks on a placement in a Primary School as part of my degree. |
Tutoring Approach: I tend to work towards the exam, unless this is not the main intent of the tutoring, I use a mixture of the students school textbooks with past papers, revision aids, and materials I have prepared myself. I like to begin by highlighting the weaker topics, improving knowledge of these, and then working on exam technique and exam style questions. When required I change this approach to suit the student, so if the sessions are more about improving confidence, I will spend more time on fewer topics, and try to make these as enjoyable as possible. |

View Daniel's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Daniel: I am trained in Philosophy, which requires analytical and argument skills that can be transferred to all areas of study. I have just finished a PhD at the University of Nottingham and looking to take on a teaching position soon. I am interested in art, politics, religion, ethics and language, and can teach key learning skills in any of these areas. Don't be put off by the fact that I am a trained Philosopher! The skills of philsophy are basic reading and writing skills that are used in any other subject, and the wealth of my experience in helping students to express themselves in clear terms is useful to anyone. In addition to teaching, I can offer a careful and efficient proof reading service to anyone who wants their English language checking in written work. |
Teaching Experience: At the University of Nottingham, I have been involved in teaching on the undergraduate programme for four years. Subjects I have taught include: Religion, Feminism, Aesthetics, Imagination, Human Nature and Evolution, Political Philosophy, Time and Change, and introduction to Philosophy. I have also been involved in the provision of English as a foreign language. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach centres on encouraging students to stretch and develop their skills of analysis and expression by active participation in discussion, debate, reading and writing. I think practice is the best way to learn anything, rather than trying to memorise facts and theories, so I approach my subjects as activities that can be learned and refined through doing. |

View Ayodele's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Ayodele: I am a Nigerian PhD student at the Centre for Tropical Veterinary Medicine , University of Edinburgh and my academic background is in veterinary science and parasitology. I am very enthusiastic about my subject and love to encourage young people to explore higher education and career options in science. I would like to go into academia after completing my PhD. My other interests include literature and dance. |
Teaching Experience: For the past 6 years I have worked with Focus on Higher Education in London as a student ambassador and mentor. My duties included giving talks on careers options and my research, tutoring science students, holding practical/laboratory sessions and participating in science fairs and summer schools for young people. Since moving to Edinburgh in October I have joined Research Communication in Action, a similar organisation, and continued this work |
Tutoring Approach: When I meet a new tutee, I first try to find out their specific reason for wanting tuition and what goals they want to acheive within a period of time. Tutoring sessions are based on getting the tutee to understand the basic scientific concepts and then to retain the key facts on that topic required for examination. These are then reinforced by practicing past exam papers. |

View David's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About David: Husband and father of 5 sons (14, 13, 10, 4 & 2 years old). More and more I am being asked to assist my older three sons with Maths and Physics and some other subjects too. I have a scientific and technical background and have been a director of an IT Company for the last 13 years. |
Teaching Experience: Was a member of Home Tutors (run by Karina Halstead - Muswell Hill, London) during the mid to late 1980's where I taught maths to a number of students in London, especially Wimbledon SW19. Jointly bringing up 5 sons for the last 14 1/2 years has been a most rewarding and enjoyable experience and has taught me a lot about tutoring. Training work colleagues over the years in different roles, especially in the use of software applications has enhanced my training skills. |
Tutoring Approach: Structured approach with assessment of a student's curriculum and their key areas that need to be addressed, whether it is preparing for an examination or general subject improvement. Numerous workable examples and past test papers where possible should be used. Emphasis of applying real-world situations to a student's learning and enforcing strong memory techniques. There is a tremendous reward when a student grasps a topic area or subject for the first time and finally understands perhaps a difficult area that the communal classroom environment is not able to address fully. Injecting some fun into learning and witnessing the growing confidence of a student being able to do an exercise or test successfully with the minimum amount of stress, is extremely satisfying. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Richard: I am 51 years old and retired from full time teaching 4 years ago to spend more time with my children. Teacher of GCSE science/maths and A level maths/physics, also prep for grammar school entrance exams (maths and verbal reasoning). My working hours are between 10am and 2pm and after 5pm weekdays, weekends all day. I will travel up to 5 miles to your home. My charges are 15ph for all subjects and this is open to negotiation depending on the distance I have to travel. |
Teaching Experience: I have 16 years teaching experience in Leeds schools, teaching GCSE science, maths and A level physics. I have a hons degree in theoretical physics and a PGCE in maths/physics. I also have an HNC in chemistry. Qualifications, excellent ofsted reports and testimonials available. CRB checked. My daytime students include people taking further education courses, access courses, first year undergraduates of engineering etc. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a patient and relaxed approach but I do have high expectations. I continuously motivate and encourage my students to do their best, and when required modify my approach to suit the needs of the individual. I would expect students to complete homeworks and to be on top of the last lesson and ready for the next. I have had some very good results at GCSE and some excellent A level results. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Andy: I'm 25 and living and working in Leamington Spa. I graduated from Warwick University last year after completing a Computational Biology course |
Teaching Experience: I've had several very successful tutoring relationships - including taking one pupil from GCSE maths through to A'level References can be supplied on request |
Tutoring Approach: My approach really depends on the pupil and their individual needs. With Maths I tend to initially focus on a 'back to basics' approach and ensuring my pupil has a firm grasp of number, fractions and arithmetic. I believe getting these right is the key to success, particulalry at A'level. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Nirmala: I am a double postgraduate in Physics and have a deep undertsanding of Physics and Maths. I feel that both Physics and Maths are the most interesting subjects and anyone can fall in love with them provided they are taught in a proper way. |
Teaching Experience: a 2 year teaching experience in a college and 5 year experience of private tutoring the GCSE and A levels |
Tutoring Approach: The most important while teaching is to generate an interest in the student for the relevant subject. Once they find the subject interesting they will definitely learn it with ease.
