Millie - Kingston upon Thames tutor

Information About Millie:

Personal Description:

I am a qualified English teacher and tutor with a passion for helping young people succeed academically and develop confidence in their abilities.

Having grown up and been educated in the UK, I have a thorough understanding of the British education system and the expectations of UK schools and examination boards. This enables me to provide students with clear guidance and effective support, whether they are studying in the UK or internationally.

I specialise in English Literature, English Language and 11+ preparation, working with students across a range of ages and abilities. I particularly enjoy helping students who may lack confidence in English discover that they are capable of achieving far more than they initially believed.

I am patient, approachable and nurturing in my teaching style, and I value building strong relationships with both students and parents. My goal is to provide high-quality, personalised tuition that helps students achieve excellent outcomes while developing the confidence and skills that will benefit them throughout their education and beyond.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified English teacher with experience teaching across Key Stages 3-5 in both the UK and Hong Kong.

I currently teach English Language and English Literature at The Tiffin Girls' School, one of the UK's leading grammar schools, where I teach students from Years 7-13, including AQA GCSE and OCR A Level. My work focuses on developing students' analytical writing, critical thinking and independent interpretation of literary texts, while also supporting university applications, including Oxbridge preparation.

I hold a PGCE in Secondary English with QTS from the University of Roehampton, achieving Distinction in all assessed assignments. I also hold both a BA and an MPhil from the University of Cambridge.

Prior to returning to the UK, I worked in Hong Kong as Head of English, Humanities, and Public Speaking & Debate at Brandon Learning Centre. In this role, I designed and led programmes for students preparing for entry to leading UK independent schools and competitive scholarship applications. I also managed an elite scholars programme and supported students in securing places and scholarships at highly selective schools, including Winchester College.

Alongside my classroom teaching, I have extensive tutoring experience supporting students with GCSE, IGCSE, A Level, school entrance examinations, interview preparation, essay writing and academic enrichment. Having worked with both UK-based and international students, I am experienced in adapting lessons to suit different learning styles, educational backgrounds and academic goals.

My combination of classroom teaching, international experience and academic training enables me to provide students with expert subject knowledge, strong examination preparation and personalised support.

Tutoring Approach:

My teaching approach is centred on building confidence, independence and academic success. Every student is different, so I tailor my lessons to suit individual learning styles, strengths and goals rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach.

As a qualified English teacher, I combine subject expertise with proven teaching methods to help students make meaningful progress. I create a supportive and encouraging learning environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, taking risks and developing their skills. At the same time, I maintain high expectations and challenge students to achieve their full potential.

For GCSE, IGCSE and A-Level English Literature and Language, I focus on developing analytical thinking, essay-writing skills, close textual analysis and effective examination technique. For younger students and those preparing for 11+ or independent school entrance exams, lessons focus on comprehension, vocabulary development, creative writing and critical thinking.

Lessons are carefully planned and adapted as students progress. I use regular feedback and targeted practice to address areas for improvement while celebrating achievements and building confidence. My aim is not only to help students achieve strong results, but also to foster a genuine enjoyment of reading, writing and learning.
