About Gemma:
I have been teaching in Southampton for 7 years and I thoroughly enjoy my job and am always looking for ways to develop my skills further. I am leader of Literacy and upper school and a large part of my role involves coaching teachers in developing their practice and ensuring we are giving the children in our school the best possible opportunities to learn to their full potential.

I feel that I strive to cater for each individual and do this by establishing how a child learns, what they already know and by carefully planning the next steps needed to take them further. I have a calm, approachable manner but set clear expectations for children and encourage all to do their best. A combination of praise and achieving success through supportive teaching means children can feel positive about their learning.

Teaching Experience:

I have particular expertise in teaching Year 6 children and therefore would be able to successfully tutor children approaching SATs tests or those getting ready for entrance exams. However, I am experienced in teaching years 3 to 5 and when I have been a supply teacher have taught all primary aged children. I have also enjoyed tutoring children of various ages.

Tutoring Approach:

I use my expereince and knowledge of all curriculum subjects to deliver high quality, personalised sessions catering for children's individual needs. I feel it is important to use a range of activities to ensure sessions are engaging and motivating. Time is also used carefully and planned, where possible, in collaberation with class teachers and parents.

About Christopher:
I have moved down to Plymouth after spending the past two years running my own IT solutions consultancy based just outside of London.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught in several environments which would be considered difficult, such as with clients that are visually impaired, or suffer from some form of physical disability, which typically excludes children from mainstream education.

I have also taught those in mainstream education how to advance their IT knowledge. This typically happens when students start their GCSEs and can continue in some cases until they reach and pass their retirement age.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to teaching is very simple and uses classic methods which I have found to work for the majority of people I work with.

Step 1: Show you how to do it
Step 2: Explain why it's done that way
Step 3: Get you to do it and explain back why you're doing it that way (And using the "Because you told me to" excuse doesn't work!)

I normally have worksheets with me that explain exactly what we're going do be doing, which has been used to great effect at the homeless shelter I taught at for nearly 12 months.

About Shane:
I am a 21 years old student currently in my second year at the University of Durham studying for a Masters Degree in Chemistry. I'm currently on my 'sandwich' year and have just finished a 3-month placement working full-time with Shell. I came to Durham on a scholarship, also having been offered a place at the University of Oxford. After next year I plan to read for a PGCE.

Teaching Experience:

I have 4 years worth of experience not as a school teacher (although I did teach English in Italy for a year on my gap year) but as a private tutor outside and mentor inside schools. In sixth form (at the Uppingham School) I decided to set up a voluntary mentoring scheme whereby I tutored higher GCSE mathematics students. The joy and pleasure I derived from their success, helped by my tutoring was immense. My pupils greatly complimented my clear, enthusiastic and enjoyable approach to mathematics. This sparked a greater passion to teach thereafter, so I decided to tutor in chemistry, physics and mathematics in schemes through the university such as the Framwellgate Moor project and the compliments just kept coming!

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is to first understand the student as an individual. In an informal atmosphere we would simply discuss their working style, attainment aims, how much work they are willing to do etc. Furthermore, I think developing a bond and understanding the student is as key as the clarity of the tutoring, so being a closer age to the students than most tutors helps me to relate to and understand them and their needs, which I think is imperative to my success as a tutor.

As far as tutoring goes, I try to make learning enjoyable, which one would think is difficult with science and mathematics. Teachers at school find this quite difficult and seem to only do as they're told. Science and maths CAN be enjoyable and as well as the clarity and depth I achieve, engaging the student and their imagination in these subjects is just as important. We would cover the material, and after the session summarise what the student has learnt by bullet-pointing the key ideas. Practice is crucial, so I set carefully selected homework tasks which would be marked at the next meeting.

Along with the tutoring, having been through the arduous task of university applications, I can help with any of this additionally, helping to use UCAS systems and knowing their operations well. An obvious aid also is helping with preparation for Oxbridge interviews as I have successfully 'endured' one myself! I look forward to hearing from you soon.

About Nick:
I am a fourth year student at Imperial College London university studying medicine. I enjoy playing sports to compliment my academic life and helping others in all activities that I am involved in.

Teaching Experience:

Have informally taught Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry and Physics to fellow students to A-Level standard throughout my academic career. Am also part of a scheme in the university to help the younger medics learn and cope with the immense workload that a medical degree involves! Being a student myself, it was not very long ago I was doing GCSE's and A-Levels and so totally understand how to go about tackling a subject and making sure one is as confident as one can be walking into an exam. Have been tutoring for 1 year now and boosted several student's GCSE and A-Level grades earlier this year.

Tutoring Approach:

Before we begin working together, I firstly get an idea of the particular areas the tutee feels they need to work on and is worried about. I believe it's important to understand key concepts when tackling a subject and so will get an idea of where the tutee is having problems and get them on the right track to improving and getting a top grade. I am great at talking to children and teenagers and try to make lessons fun and involving! Closer to exam time, I make sure to go through the marking scheme and ensure the tutee has an extensive yet realistic revision plan.

About Katharine:
I graduated from Oxford University in 2006 and was the recipient of a Progress Prize in November 2005. I am a very strong academic and have been working in the field of education at an independent school in Notting Hill Gate, where I monitor the progress of students and have been responsible for their university applications. I have also done some private tutoring work there, as outlined in the 'Teaching Experience' field below.

I will be returning to university in September 2008 and will begin a postgraduate course in Law, so I will be leaving my full-time job and looking for student to tutor privately in London. I am flexible as to the location and I would enjoy having students at my house in West Dulwich, if it is not inconvenient for students to travel there (I live a few minutes from Herne Hill station, which is five minutes by train from Victoria). I am also happy to travel to the student's home, depending on location.

As well as my 2:1 in English Language & Literature, I was an excellent student of History and Music A-Level and achieved 'A' grades in both, receiving full marks in History AS-Level (300/300) and in the Performance Module of Music A-Level, both for AS (90/90) and A2 (90/90). I also took Gold Medal with Honours in both The Speaking of Verse & Prose and Acting, as well as Grade 8 in Singing (with Distinction) and Piano, all before I had left school.

Teaching Experience:

In my current position as Acting Director of Studies at an independent school in West London, I have also assisted two overseas students who needed help with their English in order to be able to enter university. In both cases I worked intensively on exam technique in order for the students to improve sufficiently before their next scheduled exam to get the grades they needed. Both students achieved the required score in their next exam and progressed to university.

For 2.5 years I was a volunteer assistant at the Stretton School of Speech & Drama, helping to teach students aged 11 - 16. As well as helping students select and prepare pieces for recitals and LAMDA examinations, I gave mini-workshops to classes on mime, accents, stance and other details for improved acting, taught the basics of sight-reading and sight-acting, covered for more senior teachers in their absence and taught the Theory of Speech and Drama to Grade 6 standard. As my experience, qualifications and confidence grew, my responsibilities increased and by the end of my experience I was holding classes of up to 15 students on my own. My favourite memories are of privately tutoring the more shy students, assisting them with their pieces, and helping them to prepare for their upcoming exams.

I used the skills I developed outside of these classes by giving free private tuition to peers who wanted to improve their basic singing.

Tutoring Approach:

I am very proud of the achievements that I have listed because I feel I worked very hard to accomplish them, and I think that this is why I make an excellent private tutor.

The best person to help someone who has a problem is someone who has experienced that problem themself. If I had always been a perfect student, I do not think I would make a good teacher. But I wasn't always a perfect student: I had to work hard at some areas, and I learnt to 'play the game' by picking up excellent exam techniques.

My approach is as follows.
(1) Try to pinpoint the student's difficulty. Is it a lack of understanding of the material? Do they understand but need greater depth of knowledge? Have they developed a 'mental block' about that subject?
(2) Explore that problem with them, helping them understand what is holding them back as the first step to helping them resolve the problem.
(3) Constant practice is the best way to ensure a proper understanding and knowledge. Going over and over the material with the student in different and interesting ways will help them understand the information whilst keeping it fresh.
(4) Encourage the student to read around the subject, if time allows, and provide the necessary starting-point for their extra reading. Teaching them to apply all the knowledge they acquire is paramount.

About Matthew:
I am a third year Mathematics student at The University of Edinburgh and I will be graduating at the end of this year. I am very interested in taking my teaching career further after I graduate, and I see this as an excellent opportunity to gain further experience, and provide quality tutoring to ensure the success of the tutee. In addition I also provide University tuition but for 1st year students only. And I provide couching for the Oxford Cambridge OCR Mathematics STEP entrance examination papers for July 2008

Teaching Experience:

I have relevant Mathematics experiance through helping out 1st year economics students at my university.

Tutoring Approach:

First and foremost, I am determined to ensure the Tutee has fully understood all the main concepts required to ensure success for exams at School/College.

I feel firstly it's important to find out the progress and the standard of the Tutee to ensure I'm not explaining things that is already known. But more importantly, the things which the Tutee is struggling with. My main approach begins usually by explaining a lot of concepts in broad strokes to begin with by using appropriate analogies, this is followed by some examples. I will usually set questions after and check that the Tutee understands my teaching.

I also provide relevent teaching aids such as revision guilds and past papers.

I am an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford in my second year of a degree in English Language and Literature. During university holidays I am at home in the Portsmouth area and so I am looking to gain some tutoring experience. I am patient and understanding, and I am passionate about the subjects which I wish to teach.

Tutoring Approach:

I want the pupils to really enjoy what they are learning, as I have always felt that enjoying what you study greatly increases your achievement. I think it is important to tailor each session to the pupil's individual personality and needs; I hope to find something in the topic which the pupil can really engage with. After many years of taking exams I feel that I have gained a number of useful exam techniques and approaches to study which I would like to share.

About Panagiota:
I have a long-year teaching experience of the German language, covering a wide range of students' age from infants to adults. I am a holder of the higher diploma of the German language. My depth of knowledge of German language is further supported by the fact that I was born and raised in Germany where I have graduated from a German High School.

Teaching Experience:

The first couple of years of my work experience I worked as a tutor of the German language in foreign language centres, preparing course work, examination papers and relevant educational stuff for my students. Later on I was promoted to the Director of Studies when my duties were increased further, including the training and support of new teaching staff, the complete schedule of classes, observation and evaluation of teachers and of course the supervision of my students.
In addition, my work as freelance translator provided me with the experience of working on a time limited projects, meeting targets, undertaking personal development and liaising with a wide range of people in different settings (Multinational organizations, educational services, information technology and telecommunication sector).

Tutoring Approach:

Focussing on student's abilities and activities - learning by doing, rather than passive tutoring.
