View Fenella's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Fenella: Hi, my name is Fenella. I am currently studying in the first year of the postgraduate Medicine degree at the University of Warwick, which I really enjoy. I have also studied at the University of Birmingham, where I gained a First Class (hons) BSc in Human Biology. I really enjoy both studying and teaching sciences, and have a great deal of enthusiasm for my subject. |
Teaching Experience: Whilst I have no formal teaching qualifications, I have a great deal of experience which I feel makes me a good tutor. I particpated in mentoring schemes whilst in sixth form, helping to teach Biology to younger students. I have also helped the children of family friends with their schoolwork, and have informally 'tutored' my younger sister through a number of her exams. In addition, I have spent time teaching English in Thailand to 11-13yr olds. Whilst this was not directly related to Science, it gave me invaluable experience in planning and carrying out lessons. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that if students enjoy their studies, then the subject becomes instantly more memorable. Therefore, I try to make sure that my tuition is enjoyable for the student. By relating sciences to everyday life, I feel that they become easier to understand and remember. I like to build up a strong relationship with the student, so that I know where their strengths and weaknesses lie and how I can work with these to ensure that my students learn as much as possible. I also feel that the importance of relevant exam practice cannot be underestimated, therefore I like to work through exam questions with my students and help to refine their exam technique. |

View Michael's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Michael: I have been a lecturer/tutor for the past 15 years at both university and A Levels. During this time I have also been an A Level examiner, a researcher for the Home Office on the use of strategic intelligence by UK law enforcement agencies, and a consultant lecturer on police cooperation at a European level. I have also had one book published on Europol, which is a European intelligence agency, as well as other academic articles. I have a keen interest in writing, and look forward to the opportunity to do more academic research and writing in the future. |
Teaching Experience: University of Surrey: Lecturer and tutor in European Politics and Sociology. University of Kent: Visiting lecturer on Transnational Policing in Europe. Open University: Tutor for course titled Understanding the Social Sciences. Nelson Thornes Ltd: The delivery of tutorials via video-conferencing to A Level students across the country on Government and Politics, Sociology and Law. Bramshill Police Staff College: Consultant Lecturer on police cooperation in Europe. Private tutor: Government and Politics and History |
Tutoring Approach: One of my main aims in tutoring is to stimulate an interest in learning, by making the topic as relevant in contemporary terms as possible. Most of the subjects I tutor, from Politics to Religious Studies have current and on-going social repercussions. I have found that making an other wise dry topic of relevance to a student awakens an interest and desire to learn more. It is those Eureka moments when students become aware of the linkages between what they have read, and what is going on around them that makes tutoring particularly rewarding. This coupled with a growing ability to think critically, usually translates into enhanced exam grades. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Oliver: I was educated at Tonbridge School, Kent, before gaining entry to study for a BA degree in Chinese at the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS) Thornhaugh Street, London. |
Teaching Experience: In my last year of secondary school I was responsible for mentoring 60 boys of varying ages. A large part of this role involved going through topics with them from GCSE through to A Level. Since leaving I have still been called upon by some of these students for their final exams for entry to the likes of Oxford, Cambridge and LSE. I specialise in British and American Politics. In particular, I can provide specific tuition in the following EdExcel modules or in the subjects which these modules cover: AS Level Modules: 6491 - People & Politics (Democracy/Elections/Parties/Pressure Groups) 6492 - Governing the UK (Constitution/Parliament/Executive/Judiciary) 6493 - Changing UK System (Elections/Constitutional Reform/Devolution/EU) A Level Modules (American Politics): 6500 - Government & Politics 4C (Elections & Voting/Political Parties) 6501 - Government & Politics 5C (Constitution/Supreme Court/Congress/Presidency/Federal Bureaucracy) 6502 - Government & Politics 6C (Comparative American & British Politics: Constitutions/Judiciaries/Assemblies/Executives) Furthermore, I offer in-depth analysis of the following A-Level English texts: Geoffrey Chaucer, The Merchant's Tale Harold Pinter, The Homecoming William Shakespeare, Hamlet William Shakespeare, The Tempest |
Tutoring Approach: I will be approaching sessions with the notion of tailoring them to the specific requirements of the candidate - if one requires to go from the start of the syllabus in depth or merely requires clarification or revision of a topic not understood in school. In short - any concern. I will also be providing comprehensive, concise notes in every topic and explanations of how the exam works, and thus, how to reach the highest marks by answering them in the correct and focused manner. I will set homework and rigorously revise the information with the candidate so it should be noted that sessions will be thorough and will require an extra commitment from the candidate. Above all, I bring to the table the experience of having completed them very recently. Please enquire for availability (Mon, Tues, Wed, Fri 5.30pm-8.30pm, Thurs 3.30pm-8.30pm). |

| About Kerry: I graduated from Nottingham Trent University two years ago with a degree in Applied Biology. I enjoy learning about the world around me, which is why I chose a science degree, everything seems to hold a wide eyed wonder for me! Saying that I am very down to earth, and work very hard. I love meeting new people and have the ability to read people which makes me very personable and friendly as well as empathic. I am considering becoming a teacher and remember very clearly the amazing feeling I always got when I understood something for the first time and I want to help others experience that too. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught various people. I was in the ATC for a time and I taught the new cadets about airplanes and how to do drill. I was also involved with a programme at University where we visited schools to teach practical science, particularly chemistry. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that everyone is different and so there can be no one method of teaching, but it has to be interesting with plenty of examples and illustrations. Communication is also key and I will take time to find out where the student needs help and target those areas as well as getting to know them so I understand their needs as well as possible. If the national curriculum needs to be followed I will ensure that it is, and I will utilise various sources to ensure my knowledge, and therefore the student's, is up to date. |
