| About Thomas: Hi, my name is Tom, and I'm an easygoing student in Bristol. I have a MSci in Physics and am currently completing a PhD in Maths. I have experience teaching Physics and Maths, something which I enjoy a lot. I am very good at simplifying and explaining concepts and am familiar with problems students of maths frequently have. If you are looking for more Physics or Maths tutoring at any level, please contact me. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently teaching in the University of Bristol (I teach first year Physicists and Mathematicians). This level tends to be from A level standard up to fairly advanced mathematics. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel strongly that tutoring should provide a huge benefit over classroom lessons. One to one lessons allow specific problems to be found and explained clearly, and an informal atmosphere, encourages questions. I consider it the responsibility of the teacher to provide an interesting insight into their subject, and to make it more accessible to students. |

View Cindy's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Cindy: I am an American citizen who came to study at the University of Glasgow. I was originally a double major (History and Political Science) at the University of Illinois, and transferred to the University of Glasgow, where I graduated with my M.A. in History (Upper 2.1 degree). I then went on to complete my M.Litt in History, and finally pursued a degree in Secondary Teaching (History and Modern Studies). |
Teaching Experience: I have taught at two Catholic secondary schools in Glasgow, and at a wide variety of secondary and primary schools in London. I've taught in non-religious, Jewish, Catholic, and Church of England schools, at all levels. |
Tutoring Approach: I have taught at a wide variety of schools, and consequently a wide variety of students. I have dealt with students that have serious behavioural issues, and students who strive to complete Oxbridge exams. I feel that my background in supply teaching has allowed me to deal with a wide variety of students, and having helped to raise my younger brother has also taught me how to tutor students. I feel that I am very clear in goal setting, and make sure that the student is constantly pushed to achieve- I believe in hard work and lots of studying, but also in having a good laugh. Striving for excellence is part of my teaching, but I also know that excellence is more easily achieved with a dose of humour and fun. Overall, I feel that I can help any student achieve their educational goals in a relaxed and friendly way. |

View Julian's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Julian: I am passionate about Geography! I believe it is THE subject that defines our era. This philosophy informs my approach to teaching vibrant, exciting student-friendly lessons in school and similar sessions in the tutoring experience. My pre-teaching background in both the media industry and working for a international non-governmental organisation have provided me with a wealth of case studies and experiences that bring to life my teaching and tutoring. I completed my degree only two years ago, so my knowledge base, specialising in the human and environmental geographies, is vast and up-to-date. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching in Watford's best state school for two years. Prior to this I was the director of education at an established UK children's charity. During my brief career to date I have been quick to establish myself as a dynamic, confident and compelling teacher. Improving all the time, my successful engagement with students is evidenced by over 70% take up of GCSE by my two year 9 groups. I develop student-friendly resources that have been adopted across the department by other colleagues. I lead the department on many ICT-related developments. In this short time I have experienced a range of school activities - from organising field trips to form tutorship. Some quotes from my ongoing assessment: "JC was able to bring in a wide range of specific examples to complement both his and student's points" "You questioned and answered with confidence" "I watched you teaching this aspect of phys geog six months ago and there is no comparison between your confidence with the material then and now - very good" "Many of the facts came from pupils but Julian added much more and appeared very confident with the knowledge of the topic." |
Tutoring Approach: For some students, gaining confidence with many of the concepts and ideas presented in geography at Key Stage 4 or 5 is difficult - especially considering the pressures of coursework, ongoing assessment and the natural workload provided by other subjects. Yet these concepts underpin much of the reality that geography deals with. My approach to tutoring is to enthuse the often overwhelmed student first and foremost with 'real', accessible geography. By using interactive ICT-based resources and practical assessment tools such as course guides, question mark schemes and exemplar work, the student can access previously hard-to-grasp material, and gain a critical understanding of the assessment process. My belief is that you would not attempt to fix a car without instructions. I help the student interpret the manual to their course so they themselves can get behind the wheel and drive to success! |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Gareth: I am a full time student at the University of Edinburgh currently studying Maths and Physics joint honours. Being a full time student, it means that I am constantly thinking about areas of the subject. I also enjoy sports such as yoga and ultimate frisbee, and have more recently taken up yoga, which helps to bring some clarity and perspective to the mind, especially when Maths and Physics gets a bit too much! I am currently an intern at a fund management company called Cornelian Asset Management. After I have finished my degree I hope to move into the fund management industry. |
Teaching Experience: I have no teaching experience myself, but for GCSE mathematics I was tutored myself. This experience has enabled me to objectively pin down the strong points of being a tutor, such as how reinforcing the basic principles can be of great advantage, as well as going through worked examples in a clear and concise manner so that confidence is maximised. |
Tutoring Approach: The way I learn maths and physics is by doing. With a student, the approach would be to go through basic methodology of various problems, and then move onto going through questions and past exam papers so that a full range of questions have been thoroughly covered so that the student knows how to confidently and competently deal with anything that an exam might throw at them! |

Teaching Experience: I have been helping children with difficulties in a french secondary school for two years. I was in charge of several groups of pupils aged from 11 to 16, I was teaching different subjects, such as history, english, maths, french, geography. My aim was to find a way to make the pupils understand what they had missed in their courses. I have been working with children for 8 years in different area; as a group leader, as a teacher, as a student in psychology, as a baby-sitter. I have a french diploma in children care, I have a degree in psychology. |
Tutoring Approach: The best way to learn a language is to enjoy it, to feel it like a way to communicate with different people. I think it is really essential to like the way you are learning, that will make you improve quickly and easily! I am able to give classical french courses but I really do think that tutoring is a place for something different. It seems to be the perfect time to practise french for real and to share all the knowledge of this language. |

Teaching Experience: I currently work as a supply teacher at various schools. |
Tutoring Approach: As a tutor, I have a kind, calm, open and relaxed style of teaching. After providing the initial information needed, the teaching that I do will be practically based, going through questions whilst I supervise, as I believe that the key to learning is through regular practice. As the students come across difficulties, that is when I tend to step in and provide help. This is however open to suggestion, as my style will be adapted to the student's personality. |

View Daniel's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Daniel: I am a trainee primary school teacher in university specialising in music. Myself being a trainee reflects on my cost per hour compared to other tutors. I would be happiest teaching music skills, however I would happy to do literacy, maths, science, music or I.T. at primary school level. Musically I have a BTEC national diploma in music technology before starting my degree, I can play guitar, bass, drums and keyboards. I can currently accommodate guitar, bass and keyboards at basic levels and guitars at a slightly more advanced level. I would be happy to help out with GCSE music and have the music technology available to help pupils with their composition side of GCSE coursework allowing to record their compositions on their instruments, sing on their composition and have other instruments involved just by having keyboard and computer skills. On a personal experience level I have been in bands since my days in school which has involved me releasing two digital singles with different labels, playing a major European music festival and touring other places around England and Wales. |
Teaching Experience: I am going in to the second year of my degree. I have undertaken placements in primary school which has involved me teaching units of maths, literacy and lessons of music. This year I will be taking another placement in a primary school along with doing some music based tutoring in groups. |
Tutoring Approach: I will teach children what they want to learn. Whether it is what they are currently doing at school or whether they are learning an instrument as a hobby. I will offer the children free recording of some of their lessons so they have something to show for their time spent learning and they can hear their progress and show off at home! |

| About Hafsa: I am a third year Pharmacy student at Keele University. I am a outgoing, friendly person with the ability to help people become motivated and passionate about what they do. I am only available in the Walsall area during the summer holidays, and during term time I tutor in the Newcastle-under-lyme/ Stoke on Trent area. |
Teaching Experience: I do not have specific teaching qualification. However, I have mentored students before helping them to understand the core subjects of Maths, English and Science. I have also been a mentor for English for children with social disorders. I also tutor my younger sister in preparation for her 11+ exam as I went through the process myself and so can relate to it. My older sister is also a teacher and so I have learnt many things from reading her reports and lesson plans. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to tutor to the students needs so I adapt to whether they are a visual, audio or kinesthetic learner. I use textbooks, materials around me, and relate things to the real world to make the concept easier to grasp. I also would like to keep a clear record and set homework so work can be reviewed and weaknesses can be highlighted and dealt with straightaway. I am happy to consult with parents/guardians before or after each session to review progress. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Fiona: I trained initially as a nurse working with children. I am now a primary school teacher and looking to work with people on a one to one basis as I truly believe it gives learners a more valuable experience. As I work during the day Monday to Friday I can be flexible with times from 4pm onwards on weekdays and also provide tutoring at the weekends. Times available to suit. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience teaching in primary settings and special needs as well as working with adult students in my nursing capacity teaching them mostly human biology. also have experience of working with older children and young people in a number of voluntary capacities and could offer valuable learning experiences for the people I am tutoring. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer tutoring on a one to one or small group basis ( prices are negotiable for small groups). I would start with every individual discussing with them the areas they feel they need support with. I would then assess where the individual is at in order to tailor make a program for the individual that will meet their needs. I would also want to look at the work they have done so far to see if there are other areas within the subject I could assist them with. The work I would do in the tutorial settings would be tailor made to ensure the learner is more able to succeed. |

| About Mariyam: I have recently completed my A-levels (including an A-level in French) and I am currently taking a gap year. French has always been one of my strengths and I am very passionate about the subject. Having just finished sixth form I have much to offer a tutee who is starting to develop their French and/or working towards their GCSEs. |
Teaching Experience: Although I have been in full-time education up until now, I have some experience of teaching through voluntary and extra-curricular activities. This includes my work at a local primary school working as a teacher's aide. I have also been involved in group reading sessions where I assisted and supported special needs students with their reading. I am currently employed at a secondary school. |
Tutoring Approach: The tutoring sessions will largely encourage spoken French as this satisfies both oral and listening aspects. Help with written French will be done through explaining and demonstrating the use of eg. different tenses and also through short written spelling/grammar exercises. |

At the age of 13, I tutored a 10 year old boy for 6 months, helping him with preparations for his 11+ entrance exams, which he later went on to pass. Also, having younger siblings, I find myself helping them with their homework often as well as occasionally teaching them new material. Further more I was previously a scout at 29th Hackney for 5 years. This usually involved looking after the younger cubs in the sense of taking over as the leader and running a session. |
Tutoring Approach: Having received a great amount of out-of-school tutoring sessions from the age of 9 I believe I have an excellent understanding of what they must be like in order to be effective. I feel the key to grasping new concepts and building on what is learnt at school or even homework queries is good, clear explanations and if the problem is still unclear then approaching the topic in another way. I feel patient, active learning is also very important to keep the student focused. |

| About Philipp: I am a young student attending a University in Bristol. I have lived in France, Germany and the Uk. I grew up being trilingual and am keen on passing on my experiences with the languages. |
Teaching Experience: Over the past 5 years I have taught English, German and French to people of all ages and all levels on a regular basis. I regularily check with education standards regarding grammar and spelling, always keeping myself and my pupils on the latest stand. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a relaxed and easy-going person. This reflects on my style of teaching. I like to give my pupils a chance to do it by themselves after sufficient training (using text books, the internet and exercises) - most of the time they get it right without my help. However, I do my best to adapt to every pupil individually making sure they get exactly the help they need. |

| About Rebecca: Good afternoon, my name is Rebecca B. Fern and I would like to be considered for the research assistant position within the CATS Study at your university. I graduated from Wheaton College in 2005 with a Bachelors degree with honours in Psychology and Sociology and continued my education the following autumn at the University of Leeds where I completed my Masters degree in Gender Studies. I am a very enthusiastic, gregarious 25 year old woman who moved to the UK this past August subsequent to marrying a lovely Welshman. I enjoy music, theatre, traveling, rugby, football and most importantly, reading and writing. I have incredible patience and my listening skills are envied by many, qualities I feel are particularly essential to a mentoring role. I have a relentless passion for learning and have found that it is in education where my heart truly lies. I am waiting for my husband to complete his degree before I return to the university sphere to complete my PhD. In the meantime, I am eager to seek other opportunities that will provide me with further experience in the educational realm. |
Teaching Experience: Despite endless hours of babysitting as a teenager, it was my mentoring experiences at university which provided me with my foundational experiences in interacting with children and teenagers. During my first year at university, I joined an after-school outreach program for at-risk children in our local community who primarily came from unstable home environments. We were responsible for interacting with these children for a few hours in the evenings, a time where, in our so-called sanctuary, they felt completely safe from the precariousness and violence of their home environments. The following summer, I was selected as a HERO (Higher Education Readiness Opportunity) mentor for a group of thirty first-generation college students. I was responsible for supervising both their academic and behavioural performance during their residential stay at my university where they were offered a glimpse into the academic and social sphere of university. Later, during my second, as well as my final year at university, I was selected as a preceptor (mentor) for a group of eighteen first-year students enduring their transition to university life. I was responsible for taking them through the orientation week and introductory activities, as well as acting as their student advisor, thereby monitoring their academic and social performance throughout their initial year at university. Collectively, these experiences provided me with the stepping stones to gaining confidence in my ability to successfully lead and instruct and in my capacity to communicate with individuals across the ages, regardless of their background. |
Tutoring Approach: I have an innate passion and drive to help others in need. In my experience I have found that even the offering of help can be incredibly valuable and motivational for others. It can act as a wake up call, as if to say "someone else has recognised that I am struggling" and furthermore encourages them to take action to better their situation. I firmly believe that in order to excel at anything in life, you must enjoy the journey to your destination. Furthermore, I feel that if you can (forgive the cliche) make learning "fun" for individuals of any age, they are less likely to resist your assistance and more likely to invest greater interest in the learning process. |
