Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Susan: 23 year old female, living in Manchester city centre. I am originally from Liverpool and came to Manchester to study English Literature and Language at University, gaining a 2.1. honours degree. I decided to stay in Manchester as I find it an amazing city and have some great friends here. I currently work as an insurance underwriter and have been for the past two years. I thoroughly enjoy my job and I am very dedicated and ambitious, currently studying and participating in exams with the aim of achieving a diploma in insurance. In my spare time I enjoy going the gym, playing badminton, painting artwork, going the pub (etc) and I'm also a keen cook. I am able to work in the pupil's home and I am also willing to travel to pupils houses as long as is near to City Centre (and accessible by tram, bus, train etc as do not drive) I have always had a desire to teach, but was never interested in doing it full time, therefore becoming a personal tutor would be a perfect opportunity for me to do something worthwhile which i will enjoy. |
Teaching Experience: I have not had any previous teaching experience |
Tutoring Approach: I am young, approachable and believe the best learning will be in an environment where enjoyment is factored in. I will ensure this is the case. I am extremely patient, friendly and a clear communicator and I value these attributes as being significant benefits required when offering personal tutoring. I may not have the experience of other tutors but I feel i certainly have the enthusiasm and helpful, dedicated attitude that will ensure i am alert to the pupil's needs. |

View fiona's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About fiona: I came into teaching because I love literature and enjoy teaching work from all genres and eras. Overtime I have become adept at teaching language . It is rewarding to empower students to write to argue and persuade effectively. I have developed an interest in teaching creative writing. I still believe education can change lives . It is empowering and success can boost self esteem. |
Teaching Experience: My first teaching post was in a large comprehensive school. Here I taught pupils of all ages and abilities. I enjoyed and was successful at teaching lower ability students ,encouraging them to gain good grades. I began to teach A' level which in time has become my specialism. Again the students were of mixed ability. It was rewarding to see first generation pupils go off to university. My second school was a grammar. Here the challenge was to stretch the more able and encourage the disaffected. I think my subject knowledge was enhanced by this experience. To inform my exam teaching I have for ten years been an examiner at GCSE and A level. |
Tutoring Approach: I see my role as tutor as that of reinforcing and consolidating classroom work. I focus on areas the pupil feels less confident about and with intensive work and tailored teaching aim to improve knowledge. Since I understand the requirements of each key stage I know the standards a pupil should be working towards and have my own schemes of work based on the curriculum and key stages. With exam pupils I can focus on course work and nearer the exam provide essay examples and strategies based on my examiner handbook and marking scheme. |

View Frances's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Frances: I have recently graduated from Cambridge University and I'm now spending a year living in Cambridge. I want to become a teacher but not yet, as I want to gain some life experience, something I think is vital in a teacher. I am a vivacious happy person and I really enjoy life and meeting new people. I very much enjoy spending time with children and I go into help at my Mum's primary school whenever possible. I have various hobbies but mainly I like spending my time singing in choirs, sailing or on the hockey pitch. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent a good deal of time working alongside my Mum in the speech and language section of the primary school at which she works. I do not have any formal academic teaching experience but I have had both an active and passive role in the classroom when I have gone into the school. I spent two years coaching a boys Under15 hockey team whilst I was at school and gained a great deal of experience in how to motivate people to achieve their best. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that, when it comes to private tutoring, encouragement and fun are the key elements. If a private tutor is required it is perhaps because they pupil is not getting as much out of the classroom as they need. As a tutor I would try to counteract the formulaic nature of classroom lessons by approaching the work in a way that makes it interesting, appealing and good fun. Relating the work to current affairs and making connections that the younger student will understand leads to an increased interest which fosters encouragement and achievement. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Stuart: I am 33 years old and live in Dundee with my girlfriend and my 1 year old son. I have a passion for teaching, music and holidays abroad. In my early career I worked as an engineer and spent some time overseas. I am a very keen musician and spend as much time as I can behind a kit of drums or recording school bands in an after school club. I have a focused mind for Physics but an approachable personality that especially helps when children are unsure of their abilities or are simply shy about one to one learning. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked full time as a qualified Physics teacher in schools in Edinburgh (2 years) and now Dundee. |
Tutoring Approach: I am focused on allowing my students to succeed in their exams. However, the method I use to achieve this strongly depends on developing a sound understanding of Science/Physics concepts and an enjoyment of overcoming the problems posed by them. I work on study habits, exam technique, thinking skills and problem solving techniques. A central aim of all my tutoring is to develop the students commitment to take responsibility for their own learning, so that we can build on prior successes. |

View Curtis's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Curtis: I am a young professional, recent English graduate, living and working in North West London. I am currently spending a lot of time thinking about careers and my professional ambitions and something that always comes up is teaching. I remember how frustrated I would get with teachers and classmates at school, because my learning style wasn't the same as everybody else's, which is inevitable in a class of 30. This is obviously the great attraction of one to one tuition and I would love to get the chance to pass on some of my knowledge. |
Teaching Experience: I have little experience of teaching, but having left university just over a year ago and completing my A levels in 2003, I am still in touch with the AS and A2 specs for English and am easily capable of brushing up on texts before meeting pupils. I also still have a lot of course notes and secondary reading material and I'd hope that, as a younger person, students might find tuition from me a little less daunting. |
Tutoring Approach: As I am new to this, I would be inclined to mimic the style of my good teachers at school, prepare handouts and visuals as well as going through essay structures and exam techniques for the student to keep in their own notes. Some close textual analysis of key passages in the text as well as more topline views of plots, themes and characters. GCSE, AS and A2 level specifications are widely available online and give detailed points of focus. I also have a lot of friends in the teaching profession who have given me example material, that differs minimally from the notes and handouts I have from A level and GSCE. I am a likeable guy with an energetic and honest personality. I have often thought about teaching and friends have urged me to do it. I am ambitious and successful in my professional life, but I am hoping that the chance to tutor might give me valuable experience to go into teaching within the public sector. |

View Galina's Profile
Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Galina: I am married, with a daughter and stepson, and live in a quiet Somerset village - the 'only Russian in the village', locals quip! |
Teaching Experience: I have many years experience teaching Russian Language & Literature at Secondary and Tertiary levels. |
Tutoring Approach: Basically, I teach Russian via a video conferencing facilty. My Programs are individually tailored. I commence with an initial assessment of ability and reason(s) for wishing to learn Russian. I also explain the technical prerequisites for the program, and how the video conferencing facility I utilise operates during an initial, free-of-charge technical session. Students require a broadband internet connection. It is also desirable that they have a (good) webcam and a Cyrillic keyboard as well. Sessions last about 1 hour (although I charge an hourly rate, I am not an avid 'clock-watcher', and often do overrun). The actual charge is 15 per hour (approx $31 at present) For UK students only, I can alternatively deliver the sessions via a landline phone. The times for each session need to be mutually convenient. Each session is carefully pre-planned and will form an integral part of an individually tailored program. I usually email the student with learning material and/or exercises in advance. The session itself will deal with a particular topic or theme, e.g. common expressions, pronouns, or pronunciation, and will involve a variety of teaching methods, from asking the student to write in the textbox, to recitation, to question & answer, and so on. I commonly also refer the student to internet resources too. After each session, I usually email the student a few 'homework' exercises, basically to reinforce what has been taught. |

| About Alastair: I have always enjoyed the study of languages and have a degree in Classical languages from University College London. |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored students from primary school to university level in Maths, Latin and Greek. This includes preparing students for exams and tests. |
Tutoring Approach: I try to structure my sessions between the core skills of language learning: in classics this is crucially reading and writing. My other goal is to develop vocabulary and grammar in an accessible format. In mathematics my approach is to illustrate how to break a problem down into its simplest form and proceed from there. |

| About Alex: I am 27 years old, and am currently in the process of finishing my Phd thesis at QUB on voice and authority in modern poetry (on T.S. Eliot and Geoffrey Hill specifically). I am originally from England and have lived in Belfast for three and a half years now. I have had various pieces published in magazines and books as a creative writer; this is one of my major passions. In my spare time I enjoy creative writing, reading, socialising, travelling, music, football, and all the other things that 27 year olds like to do. I consider myself to be a fairly outgoing, friendly, genial person. |
Teaching Experience: 2005-2008, QUB: 'Victorianism to Modernism', 2nd year undergraduate module in literature. 2007, School of Lifelong Learning, QUB: '20th Century British and Irish Poetry for Beginners', a self-devised course for all entry-levels. 2008, QUB: 'Sounds of the City', 1st year undergraduate module in literature. |
Tutoring Approach: I am very enthusiastic about the discipline of English Literature. I believe Literature should be taught and practised rigorously to achieve the optimal results, but I believe in creating a genial, friendly atmosphere of learning in order to best engender an enthusiasm which matches mine. As a tutor of undergraduates at Queen's, I enjoy discussion and debate, and one of the biggest pay-offs in this role in helping students gain a perspective on a text they did not previously have, as well as helping them to improve as readers, as scholars, and as thinkers. |

| About Aleha: I am a University of Birmingham Medical Biochemistry and Toxicology Post Graduate who has been working in the NHS for the last 10 years. I lead a team of medical scientists on a daily basis and also train and educate other scientists. I have a passion for imparting knowledge. I am a very sociable, amicable person who has a genuine desire to teach, motivate and mentor our future generation. I wish to help create intelligent and confident young minds and guide them onto the path to success in every aspect of life. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching qualifications, however I have exceptionally high academic achievements and teach graduates and undergraduates the principles of medical science and analytical chemistry. I have also tutored several members of my family and friends, who have gone onto Grammar Schools, University and are successful in their current careers. |
Tutoring Approach: My philosophy is that "wisdom grows from study". Children posses the greatest and most intelligent minds. As a tutor, my job is to nurture and bring out the best in a child. Encouragement and enthusiasm is what drives children and makes them want to learn more and strive to succeed. I believe in repeating and practising subject areas which are difficult. Setting attainable targets and helping a child achieve such targets is a pleasure. Every child is intelligent and has an abundance of potential and energy. I hone in on that energy, and encourage them to have self belief to reach their full potential. All it takes is a little patience and perseverance. Through study, every child will learn to be focused, disciplined, mature, wise and self confident. That is what I aim to teach. My subject knowledge, is superb, in all the areas that I teach. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Yen: I have a deep passion for Maths and am committed to teaching the subject that I've loved since starting school as a child. Throughout my school years as a student, I've enjoyed unofficially tutoring peers with topics they are struggling with and have carried this on to now become a qualified Maths teacher. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently a Maths teacher at a secondary school, teaching a range of abilities at KS3 and KS4. I am well versed in the requirements of KS3 and 4 and know the common weaknesses and pitfalls of students in exams (and most importantly, how to overcome them) through my teaching experience and through marking endless exam papers. I also tutor two of my students after school to take them through their GCSE exams. In terms of A-Levels, I teach a few Gifted and Talented pupils topics in Maths A-Level after school and have also taught A-Level students during my teacher training programme. Prior to teaching, I acted as a maths teaching assistant at a secondary school in Birmingham in my final year at the University of Warwick and have also been a mentor to both secondary and college students through voluntary projects I was involved in Warwick. |
Tutoring Approach: I want to enable any student to achieve Maths and believe that the subject should be accessible to all. I want to share my passion for the subject in a way that is practical and relevant by breaking down the content into as simple and straightforward a structure as possible. I believe that true understanding is the key to unlocking exam success and know that by learning simple tricks and by rigorously preparing for exams that success is possible for all. |

View J.'s Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About J.: I am a fully qualified teacher, who left her teaching position to travel some years ago, and fell in love with the Arctic! After various adventures (including gaining my MA, beginning my PhD and working at the University Writing Centre) I have returned home, and am happily planning to return to teaching. I have just enrolled on a Return to Teaching course in Cambridge and would like very much to continue my work as a tutor in the evenings, both to earn money for my course and because I thoroughly enjoy it! (September 2008) |
Teaching Experience: In 1989 I graduated from my PGCE course with a Distinction, having focussed specifically on English and History. I then taught in a secondary school in North England for some ten years, before leaving (prior, I thought, to applying for a head of department position) to travel for a year. On my return I worked as a basic skills, English and Maths tutor on various occasions, and also as a Nanny, before returning to the Arctic where I continued to work with language via an MA and then a PhD course, and as a tutor in the university Writing Centre. Most recently I have worked as a self-employed EFL (English as a Foreign Language) teacher for adults in Cambridge. Having decided that I miss full-time teaching, and working with younger students, I am undertaking a Return to Teaching course at Anglia Ruskin University in order to update my knowledge of education policy etc before applying for a position in a school. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel strongly that all teaching should be focussed upon students as individuals, and that it is possible to work through a student's weaknesses by working with their strengths - this generally means that lessons are also more interesting and enjoyable for the student! Lessons should also be flexible, in that they respond to student's own questions and any problems that they might be having - and yet ultimately focussed on improving specific skills (for example reading aloud, writing clearly or mental arithmatic). Organisation on both sides (teacher and student) is very important - listening to students and working patiently together is vital. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Joanne: I hold a first-class degree in Spanish & am currently on the way towards obtaining a Spanish teaching diploma at the internationally recognised Instituto Cervantes. I have lived in Mexico and worked using Spanish in a commercial context. In addition I am CRB-checked and work as a freelance Spanish interpreter. I am very keen to share my enthusiasm for the Spanish language with any willing students and will tailor lessons to suit your personal requirements and interests, whether Spanish for academic exams, work or travel. A free consultation class can be booked to gauge your level. |
Teaching Experience: Previously, I worked as an English teacher to foreign students. Now I am branching out to utilise and impart my Spanish language skills. My previous teaching experience has been to secondary school age groups and also to adults. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience, pupils engage best with a foreign language when it is used in context since this brings the words and grammar to life and gives it a purpose. I focus on encouraging confidence in spoken Spanish, which makes the class more fun. |

Types of Tutoring: From their home
| About Ranjit: I am a Broadcast Journalist, working in the field full-time. I work for the BBC in Birmingham as a producer for a busy national news and current affairs show. I have been working in the field for 6 years now, making me equipped enough to teach the subjects I have listed to a high degree. I am a married mum-of-one, and prefer to teach in my home as I can be near my baby. I only teach on weekends or weekday evenings. Times are arranged according to those that suit both myself and the student. |
Teaching Experience: I completed the subjects listed with top grades at GCSE level. Some of these I went onto complete at A-Level, and of course with Journalism, I went to degree level (2:1 BA hons) I have had a number of students over the last few years from all ages. I have always had excellent feedback from anyone coming to me for lessons. I also teach Punjabi. I am CRB checked. |
Tutoring Approach: I only teach on a one-to-one basis in my home. This allows me to dedicate the entire time to a particular student, and help and guide them through their work. I assist in their homework, as well as devise my own lesson plans. I provide all the worksheets and teaching materials. My lessons are catered specifically for the individual, which means I adapt my teaching style depending on who needs help and on which subject, making my service very personalised. There is always room for discussion with parents if they feel something is not working and together we adapt an appropriate teaching methos. |
