At Ashton,I directed both the School Choir and Concert Band and ran an after-school Keyboard Club. I worked on a new and improved curriculum for Key Stage 3 and I was particularly keen to motivate pupils in Year 9 to build up classes for GCSE Music in Years 10 and 11. I have also taken classes in Years 7 to 10 at Altrincham Grammar School for Girls,during November and December 2002, April to May 2003,while the Head of Music was on sick leave.
I worked at Eccles Sixth Form College from April until June 2005,teaching Music to students at AS and A2 Levels,including classes in Music Technology.

I worked at Aquinas Sixth Form College from September 2005 until August 2008, teaching AS and A2 Music and Music Technology classes,as well as taking a group of 7 GCSE Music students and have initiated a new extra-curricular Percussion Group.
I have also helped with the college production of "Guys and Dolls" at Christmas 2005,as well as with "Sweet Charity" in February 2007 and Return to the Forbidden Planet in February 2008,playing percussion in the band.

I continue to coach private students for GCSE and AS/A Level examinations and have had two students who both took examinations last summer. Both students passed with good results,my GCSE student attaining an A* for her Music examination. I also offer tuition in piano,keyboard and percussion to interested students.

- In the second semester 2008 I am teaching on a new first year module 'Sounds of the City', which focuses on the urban experience in literature in a variety of texts. I will also give a lecture on this module, based on the urban in Belfast literature.

About Sheilagh:
I have been living in Muswell Hill for the last 25 years and have become familiar with the strengths and weaknesses of local schools. I greatly enjoy the contact with young people, having brought up 3 daughters and I am still in contact with a number of my former pupils,now at university.

Teaching Experience:
I started off teaching German in adult education classes, followed by 10 years of ESL (English as a Second Language) in local community classes. For the last ten years I have been tutoring German and French, interspersed with some EFL at a local language school. I tutor in German from beginners to A2 and in French up to AS level, and have up top date knowledge of syllabus requirements of the main exam boards along with many years of past papers. I have also taught pupils who are being educated at home with great success.

Tutoring Approach:
I put a great deal into creating a very good relationship with my pupils and I feel that it is important to have a good rapport with their family too where possible. Whilst focussing on exams where appropriate I also aim to ensure language learning is enjoyable. All skills are covewred, with an emphasis on oral work. I always give homework, unless there is a convincing reason not to!

I am a Graduate of Cambridge University and have a lot of experience in essay writing, grammar and exam technique. I love learning and encouraging others to learn. As I am a very patient person I can make learning as stress-free as possible.

Teaching Experience:
I have held both large and small learning conferences on sexual health issues as part of charity work at university. Also, I have taught a series of classroom lessons on similar topics. The feedback from these sessions showed that the pupils had enjoyed their lessons and were in fact requesting for the lessons to be repeated on a yearly basis.

My last tutee, after just 3 hours of tutoring, saw her coursework grade raise by 2 grades and her overall exam grade raise by 1 grade.

Tutoring Approach:
My approach is to develop the tutee's confidence in their own ideas through open discourse and debate. As we progress we will look at essay writing skills and how to convey arguments correctly and persuasively. Depending on the progress of the individual tutee, we will create essay plans together, analyze previous essays and eventually I wil expect essays to be handed in for me to mark.

About Lisa:
I am passionate about three things : research, writing and teaching. The past five years as a doctoral student has allowed me to indulge all three to a greater or lesser degree, but the time has come for me to raise my profile as a teacher. I prefer to work from home, but I am willing to travel within a certain distance as I live in central Belfast with easy access to all major transport networks. Potential clients should be aware that I own two small dogs, but alternative arrangements can be made for students with specific fears or allergies.

Teaching Experience:
I have teaching experience at all levels from Key Stage Three to undergraduate as I hold a secondary teaching qualification and have taught a module on Irish history at Queen's University, Belfast. This experience will be further extended in the coming academic year as I should be teaching two courses of my own devising to adults. In addition, I have provided private tutoring for a student attempting to raise her prospective grade for English Literature GCSE. Having been both a teacher and a student at so many levels gives me an insight into the writing skills required to succeed at exams and coursework for English Literature and humanities subjects across all levels as these skills are both transferable and teachable.

Tutoring Approach:
I believe that tutoring is most effective when tutor and tutee establish a good rapport, and know exactly what they may expect from the other. Therefore, the first session with me will involve establishing the student's strengths and weaknesses and identifying areas that need work. This is done through conversation with both the student and his or her parent/guardian, and, ideally, through a glance at the student's work in the relevant subject. It is also most useful to have access to teacher reports in the subject in question for the year. Once this has been done, I will create a scheme of work to be completed over a set number of weeks that targets the areas highlighted. This will then be agreed with both the student and his or her parent/guardian.
