About Helen:
I am 23 years old and work as a Special Support Assistant in a Behavioural Unit. I graduated from Northumbria University last year after studying BSc Psychology for 4 years.

Teaching Experience:

I have worked as a Special Support Assistant in a Behavioural Unit (PALS) for a year and a half. I'm currently planning, implementing and teaching ICT Clait to learners aged 14-16. Throughout my role I have support students with behavioural and learning difficulties in many subjects e.g English and Maths being the main ones. I also have experience working with learners aged 7-10, supporting them in Numeracy and Literacy.

Between finishing University and working for PALS I have ample experience working in primary and secondary schools as I worked for a supply agency.

Tutoring Approach:

I love teaching and as I work with learners who have behavioural and learning difficulties I have learned to be very patient. I also understand that each learner is different and may require a different learning style. I try to accommodate this as best as I can, by changing how I present information or worksheets.

About Herve:
I am a French citizen and was raised in France. I have a French Baccalaureate (Baccalaurat A1 French and Mathematics). I achieved highly in the International option of the Baccalaurat, which involved an exam in English Literature and History/Geography set by the Cambridge Board of Examinations. I studied German to A- level which I used to teach German at a basic level during my PGCE.
Following my Baccalaurat in France I moved to England to study politics at Newcastle University, in what is my second language.
In 2004, after working as a teaching language assistant, I completed a PGCE in MFL which expanded and strengthened my working knowledge of French as a foreign language. The PGCE course provided me with a good grounding in pedagogical methods and working knowledge of language learning, qualifying me to work in England as an MFL teacher.

Teaching Experience:

Following my PGCE I taught in a very challenging secondary school in Hartlepool as a French supply teacher for 9 months. During this time I passed an Ofsted inspection and, as a member of staff contributed to the school being taken out of special measures. My practical experience as a French Teacher further consolidated my language teaching skills. I completed two terms of my NQT year and went on to do supply teaching throughout the North East.
I have also taught adults at the Centre for Lifelong Learning at Sunderland University in Newcastle where I tailored my teaching materials and methods for adult learning and emphasised the cultural aspect of teaching languages. This was well received by my students and was a very rewarding professional experience. This has helped further my understanding of the workings of language acquisition, and the motivations for learning languages. I believe this varied practical experience is an asset which is not easily given an academic equivalence!

Tutoring Approach:

I am currently giving French lessons to adults on a freelance basis, and working as a translator and interpreter. I remain constantly in touch with my cultural roots in France, as my family still live there and I return for regular visits. As a teacher, this gives me a unique perspective on French life, access to a range of materials and an authenticity which I have found pupils to be receptive to. As a French native speaker, I provide a bridge between language learning and real life experience which I think is an important part of the provision for languages. I believe that making foreign languages a living subject, spoken and lived by millions of people, provides an important motivational factor for students.
I have strong experience of teaching in a range of educational settings and have an extremely rounded skill set. I have taught a range of subjects and have developed a diverse portfolio of resources for use in the classroom. I am accomplished at producing creative learning programmes, activities, work sheets and games.
I have strong communication skills, which have been the bedrock of my career to date. In my work as a teacher I have constantly demonstrated good interpersonal and communication skills. I have the ability to motivate through enthusiasm, and a good understanding of client's needs is central to my approach! I am dynamic and enthusiastic in my teaching, and feel most at home bringing new subjects to others. Feedback from my adult education classes has always been positive about my teaching style, and my supervisors have always been pleased with my work and my team spirit.

I would be willing to concentrate on specific areas that the student requests. My approach is focused on problem-solving and exam preparation. I find that a deeper understanding of the mathematical sciences can only come with practice.

About Maeve:
I am a 28 year old Irish girl, who has been living in London since 2003. I am currently on formal sabbatical from work as a senior environmental consultant, which I have been for the last 4 years, as I am reseraching other careers. I am enthusiastic, patient, kind and understanding. I have been through the Irish school system, but am familiar with the GCSE and A-Level systems and curriculums.

Teaching Experience:

I was part of a homework club, a community liaison between a Dublin community and my university (Trinity College) in 1997, helping an individual student (aged 12) with their homework. I was a supply teacher for a number of schools in Ireland from Sep 2002 to June 2003, teaching biology, chemistry and maths. In addition, I provided grinds for a Leaving Certificate student (approx A-Level standard), in biology, chemistry and maths.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to talk through the areas with which the student is having difficulties, and to see the standard at which they are at. Then, dependent upon their standard, I either go back through the basics with them or concentrate on specific areas of study. I consider each student as an individual.

About Jiaxiang:
As a recent university graduate with a BA in mathematics, teaching and learning is fresh in my mind. Having studied maths to an advanced level, at arguably the most difficult undergraduate maths course, I am fully engaged with the subject.
I am a friendly and approachable person who likes socialising with friends. I like playing badminton and squash, and also like to cycle on sunny days.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored some of my peers during my time as a sixth form student and during university. These opportunities have allowed me to approach a problem in different ways to suit the needs of the student. Having been a student myself I can often see where problems commonly arise. At university I experiences pair tutoring, this is unique to Cambridge and Oxford university, it allows individual problems to be discussed and resolved effectively in a manner most suitable for the student. Having experienced this style of teaching for three years I have fully embraced it and would like to help other students improve in their subject.

Tutoring Approach:

The goal of 1 to 1 tuition is to resolve individual problems and the progress in a subject. To achieve this tutorials should be flexible and tailored towards the tutee. My goal is to help students to become more confident in the subject by resolving any immediate issues, and over time for students to understand how to learn effectively and methodically.
I would be happy to take one off tutorials to help students iron out any problems. It would also be my pleasure to tutor students for a series of tutorials to help confidence and improvement in the subject.

About Abbie:
Current university student, studying Information Systems Analysis (Computer Science/IT) in Bristol. I was brought up in the South of Spain, studying at an International College, following the UK curriculum.

Teaching Experience:

Although I have no professional experience in this field, during my AS and A-level years I spent my "free periods" tutoring younger children within the school. This included helping young children learn to read, acting as a teacher's help in classes, and taking some GCSE IT classes for students needing extra help. I have also taken on the responsibility of "Science is Fun" days held annually at the school.

Tutoring Approach:

I've always found that you learn best from the teacher's you can actually connect with. Each student will have their own way of learning to their best ability, it's the tutor's position to discover which way is best for the student.
