Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Jane: I am a recent graduate of Liverpool John Moores University with a degree in Primary and Secondary Education specialising in Mathematics. I am very enthusiastic about my subject and greatly enjoy passing on my knowledge to others and helping them to understand this subject. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently a supply teacher working in a number of schools working with children of all ages. Although I specialise in Mathematics, I teach all subjects at the Primary level. Working in a variety of schools means that I am able to see lots of different teaching styles and approaches and that I can see methods that work particularly well. I have worked in both state and private schools. |
Tutoring Approach: Every child learns differently and so the tutoring needs to be tailored to the pupils own learning style whilst preparing them for exams or the work ahead in school. I will work at the child's pace whilst ensuring that they are achieving their full potential. My lessons will be purposeful, with a clear aim, but will also interest the pupil through using a range of activities. I have been told that my strengths in teaching are my knowledge of my specialist subject, my ability to set appropriate teaching and learning objectives and successfully monitoring and assessing pupils' progress. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Laura: My name is Laura and I am 24 years old. I've just graduated from the University of Strathclyde with a degree in Law and Spanish. At the moment I am currently job hunting now that its time for me to enter into the real world!I am a friendly and sociable young girl who gets on well with young people. |
Teaching Experience: I spent a year in Malaga, Spain, teaching English as a foreign language within a primary and high school during 2006. Throughout my time here I also gave private tuition to many members of the teaching staff and their families. Whilst teaching in the schools I was wholly responsible for the class and therefore had to plan and prepare each lesson thoroughly to ensure that I delivered the best quality of help to the students. |
Tutoring Approach: As I mentioned above preparation of each lesson is a vital part of tutoring, as I have not experienced anything as difficult as trying to keep a class of 30 sixteen year-olds focused for an hour! However, although I realise the importance of ensuring the basic grammar is covered in order to succeed in any language, I also recognise the importance of building a child's confidence in speaking another language. Therefore, I feel I would be ideally suited to a tutee that needs that little extra bit of encouragement towards their speaking skills, as I only too well know how of-putting it can be in class at school when you lack the confidence to speak aloud. However, I am completely flexible in my approach to tuition and if you feel there are certain areas that need more attention than others I will be only too happy to cover them for you. |

| About Victoria: My name is Vicki and I have just qualified as a Science Teacher and I'm hoping to start my first post in September. I have taught all three Sciences up to GCSE standard and at KS3. Before I decided to retrain in Science I did a psychology degree. |
Teaching Experience: I have just finished my PGCE (teacher training qualification). During the last year I have taught Science in 2 schools to pupils of a variety of ages and abilities. |
Tutoring Approach: I think that it is important that tutoring should be very much a 2 way process between the tutor and the pupil. I think that the pupil should have some say into what areas should be covered in the sessions, with guidance from the tutor to their strengths and weaknesses. I think learning should be fun, and I try to incorporate as many different styles of teaching as possible ranging from video clips to card games, Internet research and using text books. I also think it is important to incorporate past papers as much as possible with exam style questions that pupils will be facing in their real exams, so I would base my sessions around exam questions as much as possible. |

View Chin's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Chin: I currently teach Mandarin in South Devon College. I love this job for I believe teaching is a two-way street: the understanding smile on the students' faces is my best reward, and I also learn a lot from every of my student. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching for more than 5 years. My previous job was in University of Washington, Seattle, USA. There I taught college students Mandarin on beginner's and intermediate level. Now I am teaching adults in Language Centre, South Devon College. I also have tutoring experience with children and teenagers. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to use powerpoint and video in class in addition to writing everything on the whiteboard. Understanding the background of the Chinese and East Asia Culture is the key to mastering this language. Movies, music, documentary, commercials, TV shows, etc are provided to gain the "chinese experience" without going abroad. Each session contains 10 classes, which you can decided how long to accomplish, and each class has different theme. I teach new vocabulary and conversation under different themes so students can learn the culture while they improve their language skills. |

View Richard's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Richard: I'm an enthusiastic person with a love for the sciences, a positive end encouraging approach and a desire to inspire recognition in the beauty and importance of science in today's world. Currently studying an MSc degree in Software Engineering with Artificial Intelligence, am in my 3rd year at Edinburgh University School of Informatics department. |
Teaching Experience: During the 2006 Edinburgh International Science Festival I was part of the MaadSkillz event. Aimed at young people and using urban culture to inspire interest in science. This involved using music and sound, a very entertaining and informative showcase. We have since taken this event to schools and science centers across Scotland. In the past I have also helped special needs children with confidence issues in support groups, this is a very useful skill as learning requires a rewarding feeling. |
Tutoring Approach: As mentioned I believe in children being taught the "bigger picture". They should have a motivation for studying their subjects aside for entrance requirement grades. If they see how their skills can be put to use whilst approaching and during university then they will naturally gain a hunger for knowledge. This is something I find very healthy and is an approach to learning inspired by my father, himself an academic - Professor of Chemical Engineering. |

View Elizabeth's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Elizabeth: I am a gap year student who is going to York University in 2008 to study history and politics. I can offer private tuition in history, politics, geography and law, in preparation for GCSE, AS and A level exams. I am an organised, committed, reliable and enthusiastic individual who enjoys working with children and young adults, helping them to develop their understanding and interest in a variety of subjects. |
Teaching Experience: For several years whilst I was at school I was an enthusiastic volunteer for Fun Fizzical, a movement and dance group organized by Lewisham council for disabled children and their siblings. As a volunteer, part of my responsibility was to teach and help children to develop their basic language and numeracy skills, whilst ensuring that a stimulating and exciting environment was created for them. I found it a very rewarding and humbling experience, which taught me valuable skills such as patience, sensitivity and commitment, whilst developing my skills in teamwork and communication. In addition to this during my work experience, where I worked at the Tower of London and Hampton Court, I conducted independent historical research, which I then used to plan educational sessions, geared to school children, of various ages and abilities. It was necessary to ensure that the material collected was not only historically accurate but also easy to understand and enjoyable to learn about, helping the children to develop an interest in different periods of history. |
Tutoring Approach: Whilst tutoring I would pay particular attention to the needs of each student, and tailor their study courses to best meet their needs and wishes. My approach to tutoring emphasises clarity, flexibility, and an enthusiasm for learning, within an informal and relaxed yet structured and interactive environment. I would encourage students to think imaginatively and challenge themselves academically, encouraging debate and broadening their horizons. This would not only help to improve a child's examination technique but also their academic development. |

Currently living in North East, since 2006, I embarked on a six months mathematics course in view of a career teaching Mathematics, up to the GCSE and A-levels. I look forward to helping you or your child improve the necessary skills to reach your educational goals. |
Teaching Experience: 2006 - 2007: Teaching Assistant in various schools: - Swiss Cottage School, London - Norham Community Technology College, Norham - Little Eaton Primary School, Derby - Planned and delivered mathematics lessons to pupils (aged 12-14) with various behavioural, emotional and cognitive difficulties 2004 - 2005: Geneva Centre for Autism, Switzerland & Canada Therapist, Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) - To teach sign language and speech to autistic children - Prevent self-harmful inclinations and behaviours that would be obstructive to an environment suitable for learning and developing communication.. Partially completed a Mathematics PGCE covering many theoretical and practical aspects of teaching and learning. Extensive reading on teaching practice and extensive knowledge of cognitive psychology, learning behaviours, memory, and motivation. |
Tutoring Approach: I take time to assess the pupils level, by informal interview and gradually working through different problems with increasing difficulty levels. Most importantly, I make sure the learning experience is not stressful for the student. The pupil/guardian has an important role in determining what will be covered, and when he is ready to move to the following topic. The most important aim is the satisfaction and confidence gained from having understood the topics of the day. I make sure the student has a high success rates on the mathematical problems he must tackle, bt extending the level of difficulty within the reach of his capacities, and offering guidance in thinking and problem solving. I believe in the importance of the nature and timing of the feedback I give back to the student. The student is encouraged to find, then to use, techniques to verify or evaluate the accuracy of his answers. . |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Gabriela: The principle I most firmly believe is that anyone can learn if they are given the information in the right way. As a writer and teacher, my goal is about understanding the way people work and how to get through to them. Communication is everything, both on the page and in the street, but one must be accessible first and foremost and this is something I strive to achieve at all times. I am where I am today because of my teachers, I appreciate what made me passionate about the things that I learnt, how I was encouraged to approach my dreams without fear, and I want simply to continue to spread this philosophy. |
Teaching Experience: I currently teach a workshop for Creative Writing MA students at several Universities, including Oxford, Birkbeck and Royal Holloway. This is something I have designed and sold myself, based on my experiences and learning processes. Some of my work simply focuses on building confidence, as this can be the main obstacle to success. In the past I have worked as a private tutor in various capacities in the UK and Australia. I have also spent two years in Mexico instructing English and Creative Writing on a more informal level - but just as crucial in terms of result. I have also worked with young teens as a drugs and alcohol educator, which has possibly been the most challenging of tasks - trying to find a way to relate to youngsters in a language that will inform but not patronise. |
Tutoring Approach: Energy is so important in a learning atmosphere and I don't expect what I can't bring myself. I use analogy to help my students visualise what it is they are trying to learn as it is hard to understand what we cannot relate to. My natural love of learning and the subjects I teach, guides me in many ways. But the main thing is the creation of a safe and sympathetic environment. I believe in every one of my students so that they can believe in themselves. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Kelly: I am 28 years old and have a natural enthusiasm and understanding of science that compelled me from a young age to study science and to make it my career. I teach in a comprehensive school in East Grinstead. I have an interest in many sports, and used to play hockey to a good standard. |
Teaching Experience: I am a fully qualified Science Teacher since 2003, with experience teaching all 3 areas of science at KS3 and GCSE. I also specialise in teaching Biology and Human Biology to AS/A2 standard. I have held a post as an intervention lead teacher. Part of this role was to develop strategies and materials for the students, parents and their teachers to use, to get the best from students who were underachieving. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a relaxed, informal approach. I try to teach to my students preferred learning style, and encourage them to develop strategies to improve their ability to learn and retain information in preparation for exams and any future study. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About josie: I am a sincere, honest, hard-working and disciplined person with a sparkly personality and a zest for life. My motivators are: interacting with people, caring, helping, teaching and making others feel good about themselves. |
Teaching Experience: I have a diverse background in teaching: languages, (French and English), Health/Yoga and Ayurveda, as well as having extensive experience in the Television/Film industry as a TV presenter/actress for film/TV and theatre. My qualifications and experience lie in the fields of language, teaching and health. I hold a degree in French and English, am bilingual, and have worked extensively as a foreign language teacher to both children and adults, in N.Z and Paris. I have also worked in the U.K as a Learning Support Assistant (LSA) to children with moderate-severe learning or behavioural difficulties, as well I taught a year 9 french class in a N.Z college. I have extensive experience nannying for solo families, both live-in and casual, and whilst living in Auckland I ran my own after school kids programme, 'XPRESSION SESSIONS with Jos!' For the past 3 years up until our departure from NZ in May 2008, I was managing a Heath store 'Health 2000', on the side running Yoga classes, consultating in Yoga and Ayurveda, and teaching french to children and adults. |
Tutoring Approach: I treat every student as equal, regardless of age, ability and background. I am a fair, direct, motivated teacher who strives to make my students feel comfortable and confident to express their unique voice and develop their talents. I am very careful not to highlight student's learning difficulties, by providing them with consistent positive feedback. I give my 100% with every individual and ask the same in return. |
