Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Sophie: I am a twenty-one year old Undergraduate in English Language and Film Studies at the University of Sussex. I am passionate about my subjects and intend to teach them at Further and Higher level after completing my studies. |
Teaching Experience: I have some experience in post-16 education, having worked as a Facilitator and Teaching Assistant before attending university and have also mentored many peers at school and college. |
Tutoring Approach: I think the most important factor in academic success is interest in what is being studied. I will encourage the student to find ways to relate the subject to their interests. Discussion and debate will form the basis in both generating this interest and boosting the student's confidence in their own capabilities. Positive encouragement is far more effective than criticism. |

View Paul's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Paul: Apart from being an active teacher, I've also had jobs and interests in many other aspects of life, giving me a wide variety of experiences which I find helpful when teaching young people. I've also helped bring up two children of my own and have two lovely granddaughters, which help to give me another perspective of the learning experience and the attitudes of young people today. |
Teaching Experience: I have a B.A. [Hons] in Primary Education and have taught both full time in schools and for the past seven years I've been supply teaching. During this time I have taught in over 100 different schools over quite a wide area and encountered children of all abilities, attitudes and ethnic backgrounds. I have taught all age ranges from Nursery to 11+ and older children in a Special School, although the majority of my teaching has been in Key Stage 2. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that tutoring, especially one-to-one, should be tailored to gently push children further than they would be able to get in the normal classroom situation, especially by matching the teaching and learning style to the individual child. By starting gradually and steadily progressing children often out-perform anything they thought possible. I find that children learn best in a quiet, settled environment, which is why I offer the facility at my house, or try to achieve in the child's own home. |

| About John: I have 7 years commercial experience of web design /development and 5 years experience of providing home tuition to ICT students. I also have experience with the following technologies and software PHP, Coldfusion, Java, Javascript, ASP, CSS, HTML, Photoshop and Dreamweaver. |
Teaching Experience: My role as an I.T. tutor, involves me providing tuition to students in the areas of I.T. that they have a difficulty with. I taught several students at different levels of education from A Levels to Master Degrees. |
Tutoring Approach: Communication is a key part of the role, as a lot of students are not technically adept, thus I simplify technical information and take them through the problem solving processes using lay man terms. I also develop special teaching methods to boost my student's confidence in their own ability and to get them up to speed in their subject in very short periods of time. I am experienced in teaching a vast range of people including those with learning disabilities. |

View Diana's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Online
| About Diana: I am a medical student in my clinical years. I am very passionate about teaching, and my greatest joy is in seeing people making an improvement on subjects that they need more help in. I am patient and determined to work hard. I have completed 4 GCSE A levels in singapore, and I have scored As for those. I love sciences and maths, and the only thing I love more than them is teaching them. I have been taking Japanese course and have reached pre-advance level. Due to time constrain I have yet to take the Japanese Language Proficiency Test (JLPT), but based on my estimation, I am ready to take JLPTII. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience lies on teaching my friends and family members. |
Tutoring Approach: I would want to go along with the pace that is comfortable for you, please give me feedback on whether the lesson is going too slowly/fast. (I would always be available to answer any questions regarding the subjects, just drop me a mail) For the sciences and math: I would start with the topic of your choice, giving full explaination of what it involves and have a chat to clear out any questions you might have. Then I would send some exercise questions which I would mark and return with feedback. Following that, I would like to start a chat so that I can do an informal quiz to go through the subject; to find out what you now know and what else you need to know. For Japanese language: Every week I would start with a word document describing a grammar point, and I would describe fully on how to use it. I would give a range of vocabulary that can be used alongside the grammar to be memorized for the particular lesson. After a sufficient time ( decided by you) I would want to start a chat to answer any questions you have. Following that, I would give some exercises to be completed, and I would mark it and mail it back with some feedback. In addition to that, I will be available to chat in Japanese to practice what you have learn so far. (I would be glad to give pointers on how to type Japanese in the computer) |

| About Chithra: I am a Post Graduate in Computers (completed in 2004) and currently working as an Engineer. I have a good academic track record(Rank holder in Undergraduate Level from University), obtaining straight A's for Maths, Chemistry Physics and IT in all Levels. Tutoring has always been something I enjoy and I wish to use my skills to help out who are in need. .Do not hesitate to contact me if there are any queries. Thanks and Regards, Ms Jose |
Teaching Experience: I have tutored students from primary school to university level in Maths and Computers. This includes preparing students for exams and tests. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that encouraging a student to understand the basic laws of mathematics is crucial in allowing them to become CONFIDENT in problem solving. It is essential that a student be able to think CLEARLY and without inhibition if they are to develop a versatile problem-solving technique. In mathematics my approach is to illustrate how to break a problem down into its simplest form and proceed from there. Liking a little bit more a subject (or hating it a little bit less) is an incredible step forward in the process of learning it.I like helping and teaching students but I feel better when I realize they don't need me anymore. |

Tutoring Approach: I am friendly and have a fairly relaxed approach to put the pupil at their ease and make them feel comfortable and willing to ask questions. I am patient and have a versatile teaching style and am able to think of many different ways to explain things to help the pupil to understand and encourage them to learn. I want to help my pupils to reach their full potential, making learning stimulating, interesting and enjoyable. |

View Carmel's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Carmel: I am 22 and a Physics graduate from Imperial College London. In October I am returning to Imperial to complete an MSc in Environmental Engineering after a year and a half spent persuing further study and working for a large Environmental Consultancy Firm. |
Teaching Experience: While at school I participated in a peer tutoring scheme where older students helped those in younger years for an hour or two after school a couple of days a week. Once at university I also participated in a buddy scheme where first year students were partnered with older ones to give them a student point of contact in the department. Over the last year I have tutored a couple of Scottish Higher students during their Higher year. |
Tutoring Approach: For many students the problem, especially when exams are approaching, is not the material itself but lack of time in class or organisation. I know from experience that taking the time to have a concept explained one to one or even just in a different way from the teacher at school can make all the difference. |

View James's Profile
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About James: I am currently a 21-year-old student at the University of Oxford, where I am reading Law with Law Studies in Europe (German Law). I am a driven, highly-organised individual and very passionate about education and academic improvement. Having recently completed my school studies, I am aware of what it takes to achieve academic excellence in examinations and am also able to offer useful revision strategies. My strengths lie in English, German and Maths tuition. I am also a pianist and would therefore be able to offer some tuition for those wishing to begin learning the piano, or indeed, anyone needing tuition in music theory. As I mentioned above however, I am still undertaking university studies, and therefore, though I am very flexible at the moment, from October onwards I will be returning to Oxford to continue my studies. I am sure some arrangements can be made however, if you should wish your tuition to continue. |
Teaching Experience: For around 4 years, I worked as a Senior Assistant at a Kumon Centre. These tuition centres primarily focus on helping school children to improve and build-on their Maths and English skills. I have therefore worked with children of all ages and of all abilities. In addition to working at Kumon, I further undertook a two-year programme helping 11-12 year olds with reading difficulties to improve their skills. I have also provided some private piano and German language instruction in the past, mostly to adults. |
Tutoring Approach: I am a reasonably relaxed person, who adopts a fairly flexible and adaptive approach to tutoring. After my experience at Kumon and elsewhere, I understand the necessity of building on basic and key skills before advancing too readily. Once these building-blocks have been established, progression becomes so much easier for the pupil. I am therefore very thorough ensuring that each stage is understood and that the pupil is always comfortable before progressing, although this must also be balanced with challenging pupils to the appropriate extent. I believe repetition is key to reinforcing knowledge. Furthermore, although I am willing to help pupils prepare solely for exams, I believe in the importance of education in itself and for its own merit, and in this way, the pupil can explore those aspects of the subject that interest them and stimulate them the most, and not simply sticking to curriculum targets. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Shazia: I am a mother of two children aged 7 years and 4 years. Originally from Pakistan however I was born and raised in Kenya. I am currently studying towards a BSc Information Technology and Computing with the Open University. |
Teaching Experience: I have no formal teaching qualifications. I am however a teaching assistant at a School of Islamic Studies (Sundays) and have been CRB checked for the role. My paid work is as an invigilator for an American company that conduct computer based assessments. I have been CRB checked for my role, as the bulk of the tests at the centre are driving theory tests, therefore mostly 17 year old candidates. I have been working at the centre for 3 years. |
Tutoring Approach: I am new to tutoring. Having had a tutor myself whilst I was doing my GCSE's I do know how much difference a few hours a week of one-to-one help makes to the understanding of a subject and to the final result. Whilst helping my daughter when she is trying to understand a maths problem I do not jump straight in with the answer but encourage her to break the task down into simple steps. Most children have the ability, they just need the confidence in their ability. |
