About Sian:
I've been working as a tutor for over seven years since obtaining an MSc in Latin Ameircan Politics from the University of London. My methods vary according to the student's needs, each student is an individual and the one-to-one environment is perfect for getting to know the subject thoroughly. As an experienced traveller and writer/novelist I try to take the subject out of the text book and bring it to life. Enthusiasm isn't everything but it makes a great difference and I like to think my passion for the subjects I teach is infectious. The emphasis is on learning in a relaxed and pleasant environment, teaching and learning are far more effective if both tutor and student are enjoying the experience. Rember, it's not school and a tutor is not a teacher. It's our job to fill in the gaps and instill lost confidence - 'positive reinforcement', as Piaget said.

I can't guarantee everyone a grade A or A*, but I will bring out the best in you.

Teaching Experience:

Experienced not only as a tutor but in many other fields such as writing and travel. I've been teaching since 2000 and as well as personal one-to-one tuition I've taught in adult education and pre-school Spanish. Every year I take a dozen or more students through the exam process at both GCSE and A level. I have an extensive knowledge of the specifications of the main exam boards and, having marked papers in the past, I know what examiners are looking for. A lot of it's about technique, it's certainly not rocket science. There are plenty of ways in which the student can improve his or her grades by learning a few simple rules about exam techniques but silly mistakes can cost dear.

I can still remember the words of my A level geography teacher, many years ago: 'you don't fail exams on what you don't know, you fail on what you thought you knew but didn't.' I've long since learned to leave no stone unturned.

Tutoring Approach:

Enthusiasm and attention to detail. I don't do second-best! I don't do clock-watching, quality is more important than quantity, I charge per lesson, not per hour an if takes more than sixty minutes to get the message home I'll stay until the penny's dropped, so to speak, and won't charge any more. Tuition isn't cheap, it's imperative that the student gets value to money. It is, after all, their future.

About Harald:
I'm a german postgraduate student. I've studied law in Germany between 2003-2007. After the master degree I begun a PhD project in german media law which is still running. In september 2008 I'll start an additional Legal Law Master (LL.M.) course at Cardiff University. Alongside my studies I'd like to tutor people who want to learn and/or improve their german. I'm born in Mainz (which is close to Frankfurt) and have lived there for more than 20 years, so I'm a really native speaker, even if my mother is norwegian.

Teaching Experience:

I've worked at university as an assistent and have tought classes in german and european media law. In addition I've tought (foreign) Erasmus-Students in german law. In my youth I also gave lessons in drums.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to work with people. And I've got a special knowledge of the german language. In school I learned a lot old and modern languages, e.g. latin (6 years), old greek (6), english (8), french (3), italian (2). So I know what it means to learn a foreign language, too. This experience gave me a good background to be a tutor.

About Kamil:
When I commenced my studies in the Teacher Training College in Toruń I decided to devote myself to it. I knew that there are thousands of people studying English and, in order to achieve more than the average, I have to do my best. Fortunately, I realized that studying English is not only interesting but also pleasing, and I have made a distinct progress. In the summer of 2006 and 2007 I worked near Birmingham and this was the time when my eagerness for continuing the studies in the UK was established. Afterwards, under the agreement with the Nicholas Copernicus University I became an extramural student of the aforementioned institution (one-year BA seminar in linguistics). Both in the Teacher Training College and at the University I always achieved very good grades. Therefore, I gained a place at Aston University of Birmingham (Ma in Translation Studies), which was a realization of my ambition.

Teaching Experience:

I had a one-year teaching practice (120 hours). I was teaching two different groups of High School students. The members of the first one were in the first year, whereas the members of the second were in their final year (preparing to pass the polish equivalent of A-levels). Their English language proficiency level was suppoused to be B2 and C1 respectively. Fortunately, these were mixed ability classes so I got the experience of dealing with the problems related to mixed-ability. Furthermore, I had to write a diploma project, in which I used the British media as a study aid and an incentive to self study. As a result, I learned how to collect and incorporate the authentic materials into the lessons of English.

Tutoring Approach:

I consider teaching to be a very complex process which is rewarding. I feel responsible for the success of my learners and gain a lot of satisfaction by watching their progress. A good teacher has to be a comic (to amuse the learners) and a policeman (to keep the discipline), a fortune-teller (to predict what they want and anticipate problems before they arise) and a good observer of what is happening in the classrom. I aim to be a good teacher.

About Teresa:
I am a friendly and easy going person who believes that everyone has the ability to learn. I am passionate about the outdoors and through teaching in schools I have often used the outdoors as a learning environment.

I have a degree in music and my PGCE primary is a mathematics specialism, although I am happy to home tutor in all areas of the primary curriculum.

Teaching Experience:

I am a qualified primary school teacher with 6 years experience working in two contrasting primary schools. I am now employed teaching year 7's in a secondary school and working with young people who find learning challenging.

I have a current CRB and am a member of the General Teaching Council.

Tutoring Approach:

My primary approach to teaching is that if children are enjoying what they are learning then the information is more likely to be retained. I believe that it is important for a child to be involved in their own learning, encouraging the children to identify the areas that they are weaker in also enables the children to learn. By also finding the areas that the children are successful in and from there drawing out the skills that are making them successful and working with the child to transfer these skills in order to be achieve!

About Sally:
I am a student living in the cardiff area. I am studying for a chemistry degree at cardiff university. I got excellent grades in my A level results, an A in chemistry an A in geography ( I got 100% in 2 of my exams) i also have a C in maths and a C in AS physics and an A in geology at AS. When I have finished my degree I am aiming to do my PGCE and become a teacher.

Teaching Experience:

I don't have much teaching experience but I have tutored people on my courses before as well as friends and family. I have a real passion for studying and academia and would like to be given the opertunity to pass on my knowledge to others.

Tutoring Approach:

I think it is important to talk to the tutee about the parts of the subject that they are unclear on as well as breifly touching upon the parts they are more happy about. I would then go through some worked examples with the tutee and then when they feel confident let them try doing practise questions on their own. I also think that discusion is an important part of teaching annd would talk about the different areas of the subject with my tutee.

About Magdalena:
I'm a young, professional and ambitious PhD researcher. My project focuses on bilingual Polish-English children, and I am in my final year. I am a trustworthy person with her own initiative and drive. My creative side is expressed in music, photography, theatre...

Teaching Experience:

I began teaching English to secondary school pupils at the age of 21. Then I started working at a language school where I used to teach English to adults and children age 4-7, while still tutoring students age 16-19.
In 2005 I was awarded a 3-year PhD scholarship in the UK. It included teaching Polish at the University of Surrey, which I have been doing up till now. I teach Polish to students of various nationalities and ages.

Tutoring Approach:

I have always been a very patient teacher with a head full of ideas. I try to recognise the strongest sides to the students I teach. Each of us has a strong "channel" through which we learn. Some of us prefer writing tasks more than listening exercises. Some prefer visuals and others will be happy to learn a list of vocabulary items by heart. I try to get to know my students and work according to their learning nature.
My tutoring is always full of fun and discovering new areas, but also setting goals and trying to reach them.

About Valerie:
I am a 25 year old student of Creative Writing at the Norwich School of Arts and Design with a passion for language: learning, speaking, writing, and, of course, teaching. I enjoy books, music, food, and travel, and I always look forward to meeting people from all backgrounds and ages.

Teaching Experience:

I have taught English in South America and in Austria at various levels (from primary school to adult education), I have taught German in South America and in the UK, both in the classroom setting and one-on-one.

Tutoring Approach:

I prepare materials for teaching according to the student's needs: conversation, essay writing, preparation for exams, grammar and spelling, vocabulary, etc. I have worked with children and adults and will always try to find the teaching approach best suited for my students. I am friendly and patient and will, above all, try to impart the joy of speaking a new language and of making visible progress to my students.
