About Anika:
Hi,

I provide tutoring in Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and in the Nottingham are. I tutor Key Stage 1,2 and 3, 11 + and GCSE.

I plan you child's curriculum the first time as a free consultation lesson to get to know your child and the level they currently working at.

Teaching Experience:

I have had a lot of past experience tutoring children of all age groups and in different subjects. Studying Child Psychology allows me to have a different take on tutoring and how it is best for the child to study. I have 3 A levels and 9 GCSES in all relevant teaching subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

I have a very different approach to tutoring. I allow children to let me know their needs and the ability level they think they are currently working at. I can then provide relevant homework and tests to see if they are at that level or where i need to work more to help them achieve their full potential. I also plan their curriculum free for them! This helps me to help the child get the most out of the lesson. I have a wide range of teaching material such as textbooks, games, Cd's, online learning tasks and visual learning. I feel children work best when having a variety of materials to choose from. I make tutoring sessions enjoyable for the child as well as getting the best learning possible out of it.

I look forward to working with you and your child!

About Lauren:
Hello! I recently moved to London from Boston to take a TEFL (Teachers of English as a Foreign Language) certification course and further pursue my music performance and/or musicology career. I am a graduate of The Boston Conservatory of Music with a Bachelors of Music in Vocal Performance.

Teaching Experience:

Music Tutoring/Teaching experience:
Private Voice Instructor: 3 years
German and English Diction Tutor: 2 years
Music History Tutor: 2 years

English as a Foreign Language experience:
Currently completing teaching practice for Winsdsor Schools TEFL course

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that a combination of listening and individualized response/approach is what makes my tutoring very effective. I feel that students need a warm and supportive environment in their tutoring sessions, especially because it can be very frusterating when you have to spend extra time on a difficult subject. However, tutoring doesn't have to be tedious, it can be efficient and even fun!

About Michael:
I am a postgraduate at the University of Bristol; I have a varied educational background in Music, Sociology, Theology, Classical Civilisation, and particularly (my main subject) Philosophy. Within philosophy my areas are quite expansive; ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, epistemology and the interplay between them.

I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Philosophy (2:i) and am reading towards my MA, moving on to PhD.

Teaching Experience:

I have run discussion groups and run talks and seminars of my work, and encouraged discussions in groups; I have also been a teaching assistant at a primary school.

Tutoring Approach:

I like to help people realise their potential, and help people to help themselves. What is important is to make the material seem approachable, and never to say something is hard; that already makes it difficult from the word go. There is a difference between having lots of steps and procedure, to being hard. Nothing is really hard, its just not seen how it can be overcome.

About Hannah:
I am currently studying for a PhD in Neuroscience (connections in the brain underlying learning and memory) at Bristol University. I have a 2:1 degree in Physiology & Pharmacology and a Masters degree in Applied Biosciences (specialising in Neuroscience) from Nottingham Trent University. I have A-levels in Biology, Chemistry and French.

Teaching Experience:

I have experience teaching 1st/2nd year Medical and Veterinary undergraduate students; demonstrating practical laboratory classes and taking small tutorial groups.
My experiences as both a student and a tutor mean I understand some of the difficulties students face in learning new topics and applying their knowledge. I have often been told that I'm approachable and give clear, concise explanations. I recently received 'teacher of the year award' from Bristol University for my efforts.
I am currently in the process of having my CRB check.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that understanding concepts and application of knowledge is an extremely important aspect of science that many students find difficult to master. As a result, this is something I focus on to help students progress in their studies beyond the classroom (helping students to think for themselves).
Practice in essay/scientific report writing and answering examination questions will, in addition to reading, form an integral part of tutoring sessions and homework (if homework is required). Mathematical problems in Biology, including statistics, will also be included in tutoring sessions where necessary.
I will cover exam board syllabus but, of course, pay special attention to those topics that the student struggles with. It can be intimidating to admit that you don't understand something in front of a classroom of peers, and so I think it is important that students feel at ease during tutoring sessions, can feel free to ask questions and take learning at their own pace. If you can interest someone in a topic, they will find it much easier to learn and this is what I hope to achieve!
I am very willing to offer help (via email, or telephone if appropriate) to tutees outside of tutoring hours and I am very patient, understanding, friendly and approachable.

About Jennifer:
I graduated from the University of Leeds with a degree in Mathematics in 2002.
I studied English (both language and literature) to A Level and continue to enjoy an interest in that subject. As I am not as qualified in English or Reading & Writing, that is reflected in my prices.
I am comfortable and effective working with children, youth and adults, having a history of paid and voluntary experience that has included working with a wide range of people.

Please note with regard to the CRB check below - I have been checked and cleared in the past, I just do not have a very recent check (c. 3 years old).

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored several young people of different ages and at different stages of their education. While I do not have any formal teaching qualifications, I enjoy working one on one to help individuals overcome their particular difficulties with a subject or to help them grow in confidence if that has been knocked down.

Tutoring Approach:

I am keen to ensure that I don't cause confusion for anyone I tutor! To that end, I spend the first session finding out how they are currently taught (what text books and methods their teachers use, or in the case of adult education outside structured setting, what they have previously learnt). Particularly in the area of Maths, there are multiple ways to teach the same topic - which is very useful when a student struggles but means it is necessary to find out more than just the name of a topic that they struggle with.
Once a tutee and I are used to each other and I know more about the areas they struggle with, I prepare problems in advance of the session that we can go through together, first teaching them and then the tutee doing the problems. If they have recently had homework or tests returned that they are not happy with, we can go through those as well to pick up on any problems.

About Jessica:
I am a recent graduate form Newcastle University, with a first class BA in Linguistics with Spanish. I am passionate about languages, both foreign languages and English, and throughout university I have enjoyed the opportunity to gain experience in teaching and tutoring, both on a one-to-one basis and in groups. Teaching Experience:

I have a TEFL qualification and a lots of EFL experience teaching students of all levels. I have also worked as Spanish teaching assistant at a school in Newcastle.

Therefore I believe it is important to get to know the tutee, and for the tutee to get to know me, and to create an unthreatening, friendly environment where we can work together to achieve the goals stated at the beginning of the sessions.

About Angela:
I am a qualified teacher specialising in general science and biology at National Qualification levels: Standard Grade, Intermediate 1, Intermediate 2 and Higher. I studied Neuroscience Bsc and PGDE Secondary Education (Biology with Science) both at the University of Glasgow.
I lived in Thailand, Bangkok for one year teaching Science in English to 5-12 year olds and also English to Kindergarten (2-3 years) and 5-12 years before coming home to study education.

Teaching Experience:

Whilst completing PGDE I have taught in Carluke High school and Taylor High school. Since August I have been teaching science and biology at Greenfaulds High School in Cumbernauld with classes ranging from S1 to S4.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach would depend on the individual as tutoring will be very much based on the needs of the student. I use many methods such as formative assessment and self-assessment and aim to teach for understanding rather than just to the test. All materials would be provided by myself. Students sitting exams would receive support and guidance on exam preparation as well as any additional teaching required. Problem-solving skills would be emphasised and students would be given ample practice.

About Paul:
My name is Paul and I am an MA student at Durham University. I have a BA in International Relations and Modern History, and A levels in Maths, History and Business Studies (All A grades) as well as French AS level and several other A grade GCSEs.
Not only this but I also have a lot of experience in working with children, having worked at a summer cmpa in America the past two summers, working with a variety of ages from 8 through 17. I have also volunteered and worked in local schools with the University and mentored sixth formers whilst doing my undergraduate degree.
I have a valid CRB background check and have been through extensive child protection training with the YMCA and evidence of this is available upon request.

Teaching Experience:

I started tutoring whilst doing my A-levels where I tutored several children in the main school my sixth form was attached to and enabled them to improve their grades over the course of their GCSE year, several from D to A grades.
I continued with some tutoring during my undergraduate studies and enjoy the results when a tutee improves their knowledge of their subject with my help. I am looking to continue this at Durham University and hope to help several tutees in the area.

Tutoring Approach:

I find that it is most constructive to ask the tutee what they feel they are struggling with first off the bat and address these immediate concerns through methods of different explaining methods and going through exercises with them, as once these are dealt with they will expose other gaps in their knowledge or other areas they do not feel comfortable with.
I also am a huge advocate of teaching good exam technique as this can really make the difference between the higher grades and will pass on my knowledge to my tutees.
