Types of Tutoring: Travels to you
| About Andrew: After graduating I worked for three years at the National Physical Laboratory as a Research Scientist. Here my work was involved in the measurement of ionising radiation with the intention of passing on that knowledge to Hospitals treating Cancer patients. Currently I am working at a hospital in Middlesex as a Medical Physicist where I help to maintain the equipment used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught students previously in the north London area and seen those students go on to pass exams at grades higher than predicted by teachers. |
Tutoring Approach: Experience has shown me that Maths and Physics are not difficult concepts to understand. The reason many people find these subjects difficult is because they are taught in an uninteresting way that does not relate to real world situations. It is my aim to help anyone sitting a Maths or Physics GCSE exam to achieve their full potential by helping them to understand the subject they are studying in order for them to achieve the grades they desire. Mathematics tuition is best taught by practice examples, maths is a subject filled with facts and formulae that once mastered are never forgotten. Relating maths to real world situations can make it significantly easier to understand. Physics tuition is slightly different as there is more theory to understand. Concepts may seem tricky at first but once they are understood the world will seem altogether different. |

| About Myles: I have lived in London for 10 years now, though I am originally from the North West of England. I was as an architect before becoming a lecturer and education professional, so I have a broad knowledge embracing both the art and sciences. When Im not tutoring Im busy being a dad to my (nearly) 2 year old son! |
Teaching Experience: 10 years in Higher and Tertiary Education |
Tutoring Approach: The key to understanding is understanding that Every student is different! There is no place for learning by rote in my book. But fundamentals are like stepping stones, and need to be learned. I believe patience, adaptability, and imagination are key. I love that moment in teaching when a student 'gets it'. |

View Prashant's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Prashant: I am currently a medical student studying at Imperial College. Having just finished my 3rd year at medical school, I am now looking forward to tutoring from the youth of 5 years olds to 16-18 year olds preparing for a-levels and setting there sights on further education at University. My strengths lie in maths and the 3 science's subjects which I studied at A-level. I am a very calm and friendly person, and thrive at helping others in any way or form I can. Being a highly motivated person, I find it very challenging to try and make students of all age achieve their full potential and achieve the success I have so far and beyond. |
Teaching Experience: Through out my educational career I have always tried to tutor those younger then me. Whilst studying at Broomfield school (New Southgate) I performed as a mentor for students in year 7 and 8 (age 11-13) When I was in 6 form my teachers happily allowed me to run after school revision sessions for students preparing for their GCSE. Most recently, during the summer 2006, I was asked to tutor 2 of my GP's children for 4 months. One of the children was a 7 year old boy, and the other was a 15 year old girl preparing for her GCSE exams. Besides having valuable experience in teaching, having spent the last year studying at Chelsea and Westminster hospital and interacting with patients, I have gained valuable inter-personal skills and how to make people feel comfortable |
Tutoring Approach: As it has only been a few years ago since I finished my a-levels, I truly do understand how difficult it maybe for students to sometimes find things difficult, boring or just feel hard to get motivated to study. Because of this, my approach to tutoring is to try and make everything as interesting as possible. I always try to make my sessions as interactive as possible, since I believe this is the best way to learn. I generally try to split my sessions into 3 different sections compromising of: 1) First understanding the students knowledge on the topic 2) Teaching the student the topic 3) Providing questions to the student to see how well they have understood I am also a big believer in having breaks during sessions e.g. in a 2 hour revision period ill give the student a 10 minute break after 1 hour, making the whole session last 2 hours and 10minutes, but will only charge for 2 hours. |

View Glyn's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Glyn: I am a fully qualified English and Media teacher who graduated from The University of Reading with a degree in English Language and Literature in 2002. I have since gone on to complete my teacher training qualification (PGCE Secondary in English & Media) through Canterbury Christ Church University, Kent and have undertaken teaching posts in a number of secondary schools and colleges throughout the local area. I have also undertaken work and study placements at a number of different places, including The University of Las Vegas Nevada and London's British Board of Film Classification (BBFC). I am presently teaching English and Media to a combination of teenagers and adult learners at a local FE College whilst running a private tuition service, when possible, in my specialist subject areas. |
Teaching Experience: I am highly experienced in teaching learners aged 11 upwards, including adults. I have taught English at Key stages 3 (11-14) and 4 (14+) and am very experienced in preparing students for the SAT examinations in English (Reading & Writing). I specialise in making Shakespeare and poetry easy! For those learners looking to improve their writing skills as they bridge the gap between primary and secondary, I can also be of much help and support. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer a friendly and informal service. For younger learners who, are, for instance, preparing for their SAT examinations, I can offer an excellent service that can greatly enhance a student's confidence. I have a whole range of resources to support my private tutoring sessions, a number of which I developed and created myself! Many absolutely capable students often underachieve in examinations, simply because of insubstantial 'exam technique' training; I specialise in helping with this. I also like to offer regular feedback to parents on my individual student's progress and where particular areas of progress remain. I do this either by writing regular written 'reports' or through informal conversations, as and when is deemed necessary. I can travel to students who live within the Bracknell/Ascot/Wokingham/Reading area (25), or, for those who are able to 'come to me,' I charge 23. Most slots run for at least 70 minutes, so I can give my students time to settle in and recap on the previous week's work. In some cases, it can be advisable to have two students working together in one slot, as those young people with less confidence can sometimes benefit from working in a small team and being less 'on the spot.' It's also an excellent way to split costs (15 per student) - If interested, please call for more details. More than two or three students is usually not usually advisable. |

| About Christine: I was born in France 29 years ago and have been living in the UK for the past 10 years. I have a languages, art and computer science background and a passion for knowledge sharing. I work as an in-house designer in Reading, and also volunteer once a week as a carer for adult with learning difficulties. I have many hobbies, from music to art, from food to dancing, from travelling to reading... but most of all I love my life and have a positive attitude even in the most difficult situations. |
Teaching Experience: I have 4 years experience as a private tutor. I have taught many different age group and many different subject, from English as a foreign language to Spanish and French. My pupils ranged from 3 year old to 48 years old. |
Tutoring Approach: I have different approach to teaching depending on age group and on level of knowledge. I had to teach Spanish to 2 children aged 3 and 4 years old. Their memory at that age is great, they are like sponges but their attention is quite short, so I had to vary the activities as often as possible to make sure I had their full attention. I was working with flash cards, showing them objects or animals they knew, given them the translation verbally and making them repeat. I also involved the parents, writing the phonetic translation being a flash and making them work with the kids. I've also work with a 48 year old lady, who needed to regain confidence with her spoken French. So all we did was talk. I would make speak about her day or about what she did during the weekend and take notes on her mistake or on phrases/word she could have said differently. |

| About Suzi: I am a University student looking to tutor part-time in Maths, English, Art, Drama and Entrance Exams up to GCSE level. I am able to work within Loughborough. |
Teaching Experience: I have helped my mother, who herself is a tutor, and have picked up methods and techniques for effective teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: During the first lesson, I will talk with the student, going through any available syllabus and discover any areas where the student isn't as strong. I will then use this as a basis to teach them what they don't know and practice anything where they are not as strong. I would use textbook questions and past and practice papers. I will set homework at the end of every session, and we will then go over it together at the next lesson, correcting and explaining mistakes as well as recognizing the correct answers and approaches. |

| About Louise: I love reading and learning new things everyday. Life is fun and full of opportunities, and I feel it is my job to help people discover this. Learning should be fun and rewarding, not full of fear of failing and struggles, so I have an informal approach and students find me down to earth. |
Teaching Experience: I have coached and trained for many years in a corporate environment, dealing with many different people and their different styles of learning.I have learnt to be adaptable and flexible with students to help them get the maximum out of our time together. I have tutored children who have attention problems, and adults who need to brush up on basic skills. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer an informal style, designed to get the best from my students. I will adapt material depending on your ability and the way in which you digest information. I like to make learning fun and I try to link information learnt to normal everyday situations to help students remember things. I work most effectively with people who struggle with the normal strict style of teaching adopted by most schools, and those who need help to concentrate. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Marc: Currently studying towards a degree in Computing Science and Economics at Glasgow University. I have achieved excellent results at school and I'm now excelling at Uni, and I want to help others do likewise. I am extremely passionate about the subjects I teach, with lots of patience, and keen to help all reach the highest level of achievement that they can. |
Teaching Experience: My initial teaching experience stems from teaching sports in my spare time whilst at school - as a keen swimmer, I initially taught swimmers under the supervision of my club coach. I soon realised that teaching is something that comes very naturally to me, and over the past few years I have branched off into other sports, and now other subjects. I have now been tutoring mainly in Computing and Maths for almost 2 years, and have been involved in teaching sports since I was 14. I may not have any solid tutoring qualifications but I am very knowledgeable in my chosen subjects and believe the experience I have gained is far more important. |
Tutoring Approach: I take a very relaxed and friendly attitude to teaching, making sure that my lessons are as fun and interesting as possible. This not only eases the tension and anxiety that kids no doubt experience when they go for lessons but it makes it so much easier to capture and absorb difficult concepts, and ultimately, it's why so many of my pupils keep coming back. |

| About Hanna: Hello, I am currently a second year Film and Media student at MMU. I was born in the Netherlands from Polish parents and lived there for 17 years. At home we spoke Polish and on Saturday's I attended Polish school. After 17 years my family decided to move to Poland, and I finished my school there. Basically I was raised bilingual, so I know that it can be sometimes hard to try to let your child speak a different language at home than at school. I'm have a rather open and easygoing personality, I'm young and still full of energy as well as patience. Although I do not have an teaching experience, I would definitely suitable for conversational tutorials. |
Teaching Experience: None, but one has top start somewhere. |
Tutoring Approach: Basically learning something should be fun, interesting, and not boring. One has to be patient and know how to level with the children yet still maintaining some respect. When I attended Saturday school I often had one- to -one sessions with my teacher. Thanks to that, I realise how important and intensive a tutoring session can be. |

| About royella: Throughout the duration of my LLB Law degree I often expressed an interest in teaching law. I have always found the legal aspect interesting; the way in which I was taught by some tutors and lecturers has left an expression with me. The most important reason for wishing to teach in the post compulsory sector relates directly to my experience of working and providing private tuition. Therefore I feel that I am best suited in this sector as the experience of teaching A level Law has been rewarding and I would be able to provide more in depth knowledge and expertise in this area. I am of the view that when you are teaching students at any level you are making a difference by developing their knowledge, through what you have learnt. |
Teaching Experience: My Experiences I have been providing private tuition in regards to A level Law. 1 - Case, principle and application (developing legal argument) We have discussions about the legal principles of law and to a great deal I have helped them to understand the legal terminology of 'case, principle and application' something that I learnt through my study of Law. I find that my commitment to them in achieving a good grade is of the up most importance, as I receive great satisfaction when they go home understanding something that I have helped them with. |
Tutoring Approach: I am aware of the nature of teaching adults and the issues associated with planning, preparation, delivery, assessment and the evaluation of learning . Demonstrate effective practice across a variety of teaching and learning contexts, including monitoring, assessments, and evaluation Plan and prepare teaching and learning programmes for groups and individuals Analyse the critical relationship between assessment an learning Evaluate the effectiveness of different styles of teaching and learning Evaluate own performance and plan future practice Meet professional requirements through working within a professional value base and conforming to agree codes of professional practice |

| About Paarik: Aged 20. Will be going into my third year of university in September 2008. Have been studying a Business Management & Marketing course for the past two years. I believe my strengths include excellent verbal and written communication skills and an excellent standard of literacy. I also have a good rapport with young people, good personal, social skills and organisational skills as well as an ability to work with people, especially young people. |
Teaching Experience: I have no current teaching experience but I have been around children and young people all my life so I understand the needs they have and what they require from a tutor. |
Tutoring Approach: I am happy to work from text books people already have, help them with existing work or provide entirely new material. Before beginning tutoring I find it important to identify the most compatible method of teaching. I also feel tutoring should be carried out on a one to one basis. I will leave extra work each session for the child to complete independently if required. Some children tend to find certain subjects extremely difficult and are always afraid to ask for the help. I think tutoring is an excellent idea for those students that may be falling behind or who may need extra help to further their education. I know I did when I was younger! |
