| About Adam: I am a recent graduate from the university of nottingham where I read Maths with Engineering, I really enjoy teaching and generally working with young people. I am going to do a PGCE next year and hope to become a full time teacher with this qualification |
Teaching Experience: I have done private tuition throughout my last two years of university and have spent the summer working on a summer camp which involved some teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring depends very much upon the tutee, i find that the easiest way to teach someone a subject like maths is to work through problems with them. This teaches them all the required methods. Maths is a subject where practice really does make perfect, and working through their problems will give them that practice. I will guide them through the problems and this will help them to grasp the methods and concepts required to understand the subject. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Keith: I am a graduate in Engineering from Brunel University, going on to do a Masters in Aerospace Engineering this September. Before I embarked upon University life I completed a full craft apprenticeship and went on to lecture at Warwickshire College. My degree called for a very high level of maths and sciences so I am fully able to accommodate all students needs up to University level. |
Teaching Experience: I became a part-time lecturer at a further education college in 2001, where I taught an engineering drawing class. The subject is full of complex geometry and I enjoyed the preparation for each lesson and the challenge of teaching. At the end of my first year my colleagues thought that I had a natural ability and approached me with the offer of a full-time teaching post. The teaching responsibilities covered a range of disciplines found within engineering such as material science, maths, physics, technology and practical workshop activities. Another essential part of the role was external NVQ assessment in collaboration with local companies such as Land Rover, Jaguar, Aston Martin and Rolls Royce. |
Tutoring Approach: I have an open and supportive style to my teaching and believe it is important to make the student feel at ease during any period of learning. A tutor must centre the lesson around the student group or individual's capabilities, this can be achieved by highlighting an objective set in a particular curriculum, assessing prior knowledge and finally guiding them though to meet the objective. |

| About Samuel: I am an approachable, flexible easygoing personal tutor. I've have a range of qualifications in multi-disciplinary areas, which means that I am skilled in dealing with people from a all walks of life, and from many different backgrounds. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring since I started my first degree in 1996. Since then I have bee personal tutor to well over 100 students, from all backgrounds, all disciplines, and all age groups (including adult tuition). |
Tutoring Approach: I have a flexible tuition style, and draw from a wide range of real life examples to help student make sense of complicated or confusing concepts, or just to concrete what they already know. In addition, I am a skilled communicator and I lecture and lead seminars all over the world. Of course, tuition is results driven; most often those are entrance exams, or public exams. I have successfully helped student realise their full potential and go on to bigger and better things. Students generally fall into one of two categories. Those that require additional support with the material they are covering in class, and those that need the tutor to structure lessons and material to teach the subject areas covered in the syllabus. I am able to take either approach. |

| About john: I have been involved in music for many years and have a wide experience of music from playing casually to playing in orchestras. I teach Guitar, Flute, percussion composition and theory and I understand the student's experience and try to teach only what is needed. |
Teaching Experience: I have a limited experience of teaching formally, but have many years experience of informal tuition. |
Tutoring Approach: my approach to teaching music is based on what the student needs and not to a formula. I intend to culture the talent a student possesses and can de-school orthodox 'classical' training, free up performance and realise the ability to improvise. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Jonathan: I am a 20 year old Student at Derby University, studying Popular Music with Music Technology. I considered friendly and get along with most everyone I meet. I am easy going, yet never at the expense of the task to which I'm charged. I am able to read music, as well as playing the piano, guitar, bass guitar and the drums to at least a beginner level. Music theory I am able to tutor to A Level standard. |
Teaching Experience: At this point, rather minimal I'm afraid. At this point I am trying to build up some experience in the field, but I promise you won't be disappointed. During my final year of 6th Form, I took part in a project aimed to get those in lower years, GCSE level and below, more involved in music and build their confidence. This group performed at several live concerts put on by the School, and was a highly enjoyable and rewarding experience. |
Tutoring Approach: In 2 words; hands on. I understand that the theoretical side of music can be a very tedious study, so I try to make it interesting, and dare I say it? Fun! Using hands on examples using instruments, as well as examples of both popular and classical music, I break the theory down and show how it's applied on a more practical and fun level, even using the student's favourite songs to illustrate the point in an enjoyable way. |

| About Lucia: I am a prospective student of PGCE Secondary Education English (Teacher Training). After graduating this year from university with a BA Honours English Literature classification 2.1 I have decided to secure my career within the education sector. I am using my time before I return to university to obtain 'life experience' and continue with my studies of general interest ; Modern Foreign Languages, English Language and Drug Awareness. I am a young and enthusiastic tutor whom understands the invaluable necessity of positive educational experiences. |
Teaching Experience: I am an experienced Private Tutor of English, in addition to this I have experience of working as a classroom assistant within a secondary provision. I also voluntarily tutor a primary aged child with spelling , grammar and pronunciation fortnightly. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe that a concrete understanding of the texts/works under examination is necessary for success. To achieve this I use variable methods of discussion , close passage analysis, secondary sources , re-reading of texts , the use of other mediums (such as videos, tapes - PLEASE NOTE - videos will not be watched during lesson time). However, the most important thing to note is that my approach to tutoring varies depending with the tutee - effective learning techniques , strengths and weaknesses will all be discussed to develop a structured and efficient learning plan. My tutoring approach is always relaxed, yet focused. |

| About Gavin: I have recently completed my PhD studies in the field of Genetics and Plant Pathology/Ecology. I have a first class honours degree in Environmental Biology. |
Teaching Experience: During my PhD studies I have gained experience of the teaching, supervision and assessment of students at undergraduate level. This work has involved the marking of students work. I have also tutored several students on a one to one basis. |
Tutoring Approach: I take a very relaxed attitude to tutoring aiming to provoke discussion rather than to 'preach scientific concepts' to the student. My aim is to complement the classwork of the student, rather than compete with it! I make extensive use of past exam questions, from exams specific to the individual student, as I find this allows the student to gain an understanding of the exact words the examiners are looking for. There is nothing worse than when a students answer has the right direction, but due to incorrect wording, the mark-scheme does not allow them to gain a mark. |

View Nidha's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Nidha: I was inspired to teach by my own experience at school, particularly by my primary school teacher. She was passionate about teaching and as a result her students were enthusiastic learners. I find teaching fun and incredibly rewarding; this is why I seek the opportunity to teach whenever I can. For the past three years, I have worked voluntarily as a Classroom Assistant on a weekly basis. I have found that empathy and tolerance of children is something that comes naturally to me. The primary aged children that I teach regularly write up essays and carry out presentations in groups in front of the rest of the children, based on the information that I convey to them. This has increased their confidence and their English writing skills. For the past three summers I have worked as a teacher, teaching English, Maths and Science in a Tuition Centre, for bilingual children. I found that being bilingual myself, I was able to relate and cater to the specific needs of bilingual children and their parents. I helped manage the school and organised a successful end of Summer School Parents' Day Program where children demonstrated to an audience of parents what they learnt over the summer |
Teaching Experience: I have completed a Primary PGCE and have worked in a school as a classroom teacher for 5 school terms (1 1/2 years). My teaching profession however started in January 2007 where I took a position as a year 5 classroom teacher. This has given me the opportunity to put to practice all the skills and knowledge gained from my experiences. The school I worked in met all the requirements for teachers who are skilled in educating children in the multicultural, multilingual urban environment of East London. This is because equal opportunities, working with bilingual learners and children with special educational needs underpin all curriculum settings. My degree, work experience, teaching placements and first job have proved to be worthwhile experiences and have confirmed my desire to teach. Watching children learn and progress is incredibly rewarding. I have also found that in many instances teachers are also the learners, as students can often teach them valuable lessons. |
Tutoring Approach: i find that a one on basis as tutoring can provide the child to apply what he/she has learnt in school. also it will help those children who can not learn or understand in a group setting and will give them the boost they need to up their grades. i also do not mind group tutoring as this approach has many benefits, one being peer learning. tuition in general helps the child to practice and apply the various skills needed in maths, english and science. |

| About Linda: I graduated 2 years ago with a Maths degree, and I am currently working in a local college, see below. I love teaching my subject as I am very passionate about it, and never sick of doing Maths. |
Teaching Experience: I am a Maths and Numeracy Lecturer at a local college. I have been privately tutoring pupils who are sitting Standard Grade and Higher maths, for the past 2 years. |
Tutoring Approach: As the individual is coming and approaching a tutor they want help therefore it is not my place to shout but to guide and help find a way to make things easier for the person in question. Everyone has there own individual style of learning and this needs to be remembered when teaching someone. I like to go at the pupils own pace, and have found my relaxed approach really helps, as more often than not, the students just lack confidence. |

| About Vicki: I am a twenty year old Warwick University student, about to go into my final year of a degree in English and Comparative Literature. I intend to become a teacher after graduating, and have already been offered a graduate teaching scheme placement after I have finished my degree at a Coventry Secondary School. I am friendly, helpful, considerate and encouraging, and have much experience of working with children of all ages, particularly those with Special Educational Needs. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught in schools in Coventry, Marbella, Spain and Matlock, Derbyshire. I have completed the Student Associate Scheme through Warwick University, whereby I passed a teaching assessment process which meant that I could take part of my teacher training early and also go into a local Coventry Secondary School one day a week to teach lessons, work in the Special Needs department and to work as a teaching assistant in other lessons. This role taught me a lot about teaching, and in particular about effective lesson delivery to large groups, these skills can obviously be adapted to bring about effective learning on a one-to-one basis. In the last academic year I also worked one day a week in another Coventry Secondary School in the Special Needs department, working on a one-to-one basis with students who had difficulties such as ADHD, Asperger's syndrome, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, Dyscalculia, and also those with Behavioural problems. I worked with these students to improve their core English and Mathematics skills, as they were working towards a qualification that demonstrated their key knowledge of both. This role was the same as will be required for tutoring, the one-to-one encouragement and development of a student being key. I have worked in the Aloha College in Marbella, Spain, developing English as a Foreign Language skills with students that were 13 years old, and also helping in some GCSE equivalent classes. The main thing that this role taught me were the skills needed to effectively teach EFL and bring about effective and lasting understanding of English to non-native speakers. When I was doing my A' levels in Matlock, Derbyshire, I worked in the Special Needs department of my school for two lessons a week, mainly on a one-to-one basis, but also on a whole class level. In this role I focused on developing the communicational and language skills of the students, but also helped with many subjects. I also specialised in working with students that had ADHD, and developed effective learning programmes for them. |
Tutoring Approach: I would approach tutoring as a very pupil-centred experience, as the student is likely to have specific areas that they want help with developing and understanding as a starting point. This would be the first area that I addressed. The next stage would be to link this area that needed extra help to the wider context of the subject as a whole, to ensure full understanding of the subject and to help with any further problems that may occur. Homework would be an aspect of my tutoring, however, I would not want it to get in the way of homework that is set by the school, so if the student had a large amount of coursework and/or homework that the school had set, I would accept that it would not always be possible to do the work that I had set as well. I would also offer help and guidance on any homework with which the student was stuck, and use this as a starting point for further discussion and development of the student's knowledge and understanding of the subject, as the issues that are raised in homework are often those that are the most difficult to recognise at school, as the student often does not get the opportunity to discuss with the teacher what they found difficult about the homework, they are often just told what they did is wrong, which does not give the student any scope for being able to work through their difficulties and fully understand the subject. I also do a lot of work with students with special educational needs, and would be more than willing to continue this, if only a level that would teach the student coping techniques and strategies to use in the school environment in order to help them get on better at school. |

| About Jade: I am an undergraduate student at the University of Oxford in my second year of a degree in English Language and Literature. During university holidays I am at home in the Portsmouth area and so I am looking to gain some tutoring experience. I am patient and understanding, and I am passionate about the subjects which I wish to teach. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience of working voluntarily as a classroom assistant in a local primary school. I also gave tuition to my sisters and their friends during their GCSEs and continue to help my younger siblings with their studies. |
Tutoring Approach: I want the pupils to really enjoy what they are learning, as I have always felt that enjoying what you study greatly increases your achievement. I think it is important to tailor each session to the pupil's individual personality and needs; I hope to find something in the topic which the pupil can really engage with. After many years of taking exams I feel that I have gained a number of useful exam techniques and approaches to study which I would like to share. |
