About kevin:
I have over seven years experience tutoring privately. I particularly enjoy seeing a pupil master an area that had been previously inaccessible to that pupil and sharing the joy that is felt. Most of my teaching experience has been gathered working with SEN pupils and I am well aware of the need to be consistent, patient, creative and supportive when tutoring - all qualities that I possess in abundance.

Teaching Experience:

2004-Present: Head of English/History, Mill Hill County High School, Oak Hill Campus (Specialist EBD school), East Barnet London
2004 Jan-2004 Jul: teacher of English/SEN, Lea Valley High School, Enfield London. Specialist Sports College and mixed secondary school catering to over 1000 pupils, 45% of whom are statemented as having SEN.
Sep 2003-Jan 2004: Teacher of Geography/SEN, Wandle Valley EBD school, Carshalton Surrey
1999-2003: Teacher of History/English/Citizenship, Charlie Smith High School, Kingston Jamaica

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer not to be overly intrusive. I will guide and support pupils as much as possible and give them as much resources as they need. However, i do believe in encouraging pupils to learn at their own pace and within the constraints of their respective learning styles. I believe in empowering my tutees to 'discover' and to solve problems with my help as opposed to being totally reliant on me for the answers.

About Sarah:
I'm a graduate who has spent three years living in France studying French language and culture. I am enthusiastic about my subject and enjoy passing on what I have learnt to other people. I'm easy to get on with and am an approachable person.

Teaching Experience:

I tutored French children whilst living in France, and worked for half a year in a French school working with young children.

Tutoring Approach:

I try to make the subject interesting for the student, not intimidating - by using music or conversation for example. I realise that speaking in a foreign language can be embarrassing for students, so I try to make them less self conscious. Although grammar is important, French is a living and evolving subject, something which makes it constantly intersting, and I think its important to reflect this in lessons.

About David:
I have recently completed my A Level courses in Maths, Music and English at King Edward VI Grammar School in Chelmsford. I also Have an AS Level in French. I am enthusiastic about learning and love the satisfaction that comes from actually being able to see an improvement in a pupil. I have 4 AS Levels in General Studies (A), French (B), Music (A) and English (A) and am hoping to achieve As in English and Music in the Summer. I already hold an A Level in Maths (A) and 11 GCSEs which consist of 8A*s and 3As.

Teaching Experience:

I have been tutoring at GCSE Level for 2 Years and have always been eager to help others understand what is going on in a lesson or in other activities. Through my job at Wacky Warehouse I have had a lot of experience interacting with children and my youth also allows me to talk from more recent experience than others may be able to.

Tutoring Approach:

I don't believe that it is possible to have one approach to tutoring as every pupil is an individual and therefore needs to be catered for in a different way. Some pupils will react better to a laid back environment while others work better in an environment that is more obviously geared towards a strict regime of learning. It is because of this that is essential to judge each pupil on their merits and react to them accordingly.

About Oliver:
I'm Oliver, I'm a 26 year old from Sheffield with English as my first language. I have just completed a degree in education studies and history at the University of Derby and have experience in cultural and religous history as well as the more traditional topics.

My education portion of my degree looked at the psychology of learning and behaviour management, allowing me to understand many learners and the difficulties faced.

I am commited to acquiring additional knowledge through my own development and love languages, currently engaged in learning Japanese with another private tutor in Sheffield whom I can recomend.

Teaching Experience:

Having completed a degree in education studies and history, I have extensive experience teaching from primary, through secondary and even post 16. As well as this I have been involved in private tutoring and youth work throughout my time at university.

Prior to this I was a technical coach for a major internet service provider and built and delivered a variety of bespoke training programmes in IT related fields.

Tutoring Approach:

My main approach will always be to teach an academic skillset to underpin the traditional study of any subject. This allows me to help learners understand how they learn and make them more autonomous, skills often taught at university. These skills are transferrable to other areas of life and will help focus and organise learners.

On top of this, it is my aim to provide guidance from the curricula and provide a widening of this through directing reading and personal development - but every learner is different and as such discussion and ongoing reflective review would dictate the tweaking of any style to match that of the learner.

About Carmen:
Native Spanish speaker. A self-motivated and hard working Spanish Teacher with experience designing lessons according to student's needs/requirements. I am able to identify learning difficulties and quickly adapt lessons to bring out the best for each one of the students. An effective communicator

Teaching Experience:

September 2006 - April 2007 - April 2008 Freelance Spanish Teacher for novice, beginners and intermediate Students. Company: PLAN INTERNATIONAL .Woking, Surrey (UK)

April 2005 - March 2006 Freelance Spanish Teacher for novice, beginners, intermediate and advanced students. Institution: ILISA. Panama City - Panama

Tutoring Approach:

The communicative approach centered in developing students' skills and abilities is my preferred tutoring approach, but it depends on the students needs. In the first lesson there is an assessment of competence and a learning style evaluation so I can easily tailor the Spanish course according to the needs of the student.
In all cases, Spanish classes include grammar, written exercises, talking and listening, and the writing practices are carried out through the homework (optional)
Also important the mutual evaluation at the end of each class so that both student and myself can correct/improve something that is not going well in order to fulfill mutual expectations, and have an interesting, funny and efficient Spanish lesson every class.

About Matthew:
I am a graduate student at the London School of Economics about to start my Masters in The Philosophy and History of Science. Despite the name of the course, it is mostly mathematics and theoretical physics. The course is ranked second in the world for the area I am studying.

My previous degree was from the University of St Andrews, a Masters in Astrophysics for which I was awarded a distinction and I have won numerous awards and scholarships during my degree.

I have worked at world renowned research centres including the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, the U.S.A.'s equivalent of CERN. You may have heard of CERN in the news recently with the Large Hadron Collider experiments.

I am aiming for an academic career but I am passionate about teaching and education at all levels. I believe education is the key to helping people live fulfilling and successful lives and I find it very rewarding to help people break through conceptual barriers.

Teaching Experience:

I have tutored ten pupils/students over the past year. I get excellent responses from my students during my sessions accompanied by improved grades. I try and use a range of methods tailored to whatever works best for the student from traditional exercises to problem based learning, experiment, lectures and discussion.

Tutoring Approach:

During lessons, I encourage free thinking and use mixtures of traditional exercises, experiments (where relevant and possible), problem based learning, lectures and discussion. My aim is not just to improve my student's abilities but to build confidence and help my students to enjoy science, mathematics and learning in general. Unlike some teachers at school, I'm not going to be patronizing or judgemental. You will not get branded by your target grades or past record of achievement. I treat everyone as having the potential to excel and try to work out with you how best to realize that potential.

I am here to help those struggling with school work and those bored out of their minds who want a challenge. I strongly believe that anyone can do mathematics and science, all you need is a great teacher and a reason. I will show you why mathematics and science is so essential and how it can be rewarding and a lot of fun.

I will also help with homework, mark homework, give exam coaching and give interview advice.

All students and parents are invited to a free, informal consultation to understand your specific needs and devise and initial plan of action. The first lesson is free.

About Katharine:
I graduated from De Montfort University in July 2008 with a BA Hons degree in English and Media Studies, with a 2:1. I have always wanted to be a teacher and I now am studying for my PGCE at Solihull College.

Teaching Experience:

I currently teach a resit GCSE English class at Solihull College for pupils aged 16-60, who may or may not have already attempted their GCSE, but for whatever reason need to redo it. I also work at Henley College, Coventry as a Literacy Lecturer for adults who require support with literacy skills.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that the best way to help people to succeed is to give them the confidence to try. From my experience, the biggest set back that people have is not being comfortable to try to learn, and so I think that it is very important to create a strong relationship between tutor and student so that the student feels that they can ask for help when they need it. I am a recent graduate, and so although this means that I may not have as much teaching experience as other tutors, I do remember what it is like to be a student myself - this helps me to understand students' needs and to help them to succeed.
