I have an undergraduate degree in history and history of art from the Sorbonne in Paris, an MA in film studies and communication from the University of London (Queen Mary Univeristy) and a postgraduate diploma in magazine journalism from City University. | About Mark: I am a 22 year old student at Portsmouth University and I am Currently studying Criminology and Criminal Justice in my final year there. I feel i have gained a lot of academic experience and can pass this on to those i tutor. I am friendly, approachable and outgoing and can communicate with varying age groups. |
Teaching Experience: Having already done several work placements in primary schools and having tutored privately several times beofre i feel i have a firm grounding in what is required of a tutor both academically and people skills wise. Upon completion of my Degree I have already been accepted to teach for a Secondary School within Portsmouth which I believe reflects how hard I work to achieving goals. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that it is very important to get to know the individual you are tutoring, obviously different people learn at different levels but you must also identify the best methods at getting them to understand the work they are undertaking. I like to interact with those i tutor and clarify what will be expected of them in exams or essays- together we then come up with an action plan of how best to appraoch a particular issue, especially if they are struggling with it. |

| About Indrek: My name is Indrek Sepp, I am a 21 year old second year student of physics at the University of Durham. I am friendly, approachable and passionate about science and mathematics. I very much enjoy teaching these people in general because I like to show just how fascinating and elegant they can be. As a sidenote: I can provide confirmation about my CRB check |
Teaching Experience: I achieved three A-Levels at A grade in Physics, Mathematics and Chemistry in 2005. I have an intimate understanding of these subjects and being an active student myself I have a methodology to revision and exam preperation which is flexible and applicable to those of all abilities. I have been helping my friends and my siblings to study for their exams which involve Science and Mathematics from my A-levels right up to now with in University. I do this simply because I enjoy tuition for its own sake. I have helped a wide range of people with a wide range of abilities to achieve an understanding of how mathematics and science work. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is to simply work through past exam papers in order to give the tutee a familiarity with the type of questions asked, and to gauge their relative strengths and weaknesses. I shall impart my experience and understanding to solidify the former while minimising the latter. The A-level syllabi have not changed fundamentally since my A-levels, neither has the format of the questions, how they are marked and the technique with which to approach them. You will find my tutoring to be straightforward and concise. I think that the sciences and mathematics are generally not taught very well at school. I believe that excelling in them lies not in learning dozens of formulae but with understanding the simple principles upon which they are built. Not only is this approach more interesting and intellectually rewarding, it also allows you to approach any questions asked in exams with confidence and ease. I am absolutely confident in my ability to prepare prospective tutees to achieve not only their maximal marks in the subjects of Maths, Chemistry and Physics; but also to instil a deeper, more unified understanding and appreciation of them. |

| About Claire: I am a geography graduate from Oxford University, currently working in Leeds as a transport planner and tutoring 2-3 times a week during evenings or weekends. |
Teaching Experience: I have been tutoring for 5 years at a variety of levels, from primary school through to A level standard. Everyone I have worked with has achieved their aims of higher grades, for personal satisfaction or in order to get the necessary marks for university entrance. |
Tutoring Approach: I offer a friendly and professional approach to tutoring, achieving consistent high grades, but also caring for those who may be struggling at any level. I have extensive experience with dyslexic and dyspraxic students, but have also worked with those working towards Oxbridge entrance. I appreciate that each student has a different approach to absorbing information, and so tailor my lessons using appropriate techniques to suit the individual. Lessons are relaxed, and we go at a pace the student feels comfortable with; if I can make learning fun as well, students are more likely to absorb information and so learn more. |

| About Alexandria: I graduated last year with a 1:1 from Cardiff University in Journalism, Film and Broadcasting and have since then taken a CELTA course and taught as an ESL teacher at a summer school. I have a high grasp of English and Media, with specialities in textual analysis in film and English literature, and my degree has also nurtured a natural interest in and analysis of the English language. |
Teaching Experience: I have undertaken university, A2, AS and GCSE level exams in recent years and so am familiar with what is required to pass an exam. During my CELTA I taught adults, but I also have experience of mentoring GCSE students and teaching foreign students aged between 11-17. |
Tutoring Approach: I prefer to elicit responses from tutees rather than just present information, I strive to make lesson content not only relevant but enjoyable. This is primarily in presenting material using a range of different skills (e.g. auditory, kinesthetic, visual, etc) to give variation as well as identifying the needs of each individual student and between us setting achievable goals to aim for during our sessions. |

| About Katherine: I am an English graduate from Durham University. I have recently completed the Teach First scheme, where I have been working in an inner city London school for 2 years. I am staying in my current school for a further term and then I am off travelling to see the world (well some of it!) I love visiting new places and am very excited about going away. I love Literature and read avidly. I am outgoing and friendly and truly have a passion for teaching. At the end of my travelling adventures I am going to work in a school in Africa. I think education is very important and want to contribute to the lives of children who don't always receive the best education. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working in an all boys secondary school in Peckham for two years and am currently there for a further term. I have done a placement in a girls school as well as a sixth form college. I regularly have revision classes for my own pupils, normally on a one to one basis or in a small group. I find this very different to the usual classroom environment! (its a lot quieter!) |
Tutoring Approach: I enjoy working with pupils on a one- to - one basis as you get the opportunity to see them develop and get the results they are trying so hard for. I believe that learning should be fun and therefore my planned lessons normally include some personal learning time e.g. learning about a new "cool" poet (can poetry be cool?!) or spending 5/ 10 minutes reading about what the pupil really wants to know about English. I then would prefer to work on areas my pupil is struggling with at school, be that grammar, or spelling or sentence structure etc. I will correct homework and essays etc with notes and suggestions, but very rarely set tutoring homework. |

Tutoring Approach: During my years of teaching i have come to learn that there are a number of different ways that students learn and retain information. I believe that getting the basics is vital for students to be able to gain a deeper understanding of the content and to extend their knowledge and interest in the subject. I also believe that basing the science around real world applications students will see the relevance and take a greater interest in science |

| About Sophie: I might be expensive but I am worth it as you, or your child, will see a marked improvement in your/their results. Also to assess whether I am the right tutor for you I offer the first lesson for free. I was awarded a first class honours degree from University College London in 1997 and went on to study a PhD in Quantum Mechanics. On successful completion of my PhD in 2001 I started work at Thales Research and Technology (TRT) where I led projects on Adaptive Learning Systems and Information Management. I initiated the first programme to span the three TRT laboratories in France, Netherlands and UK in the area of Cognitive Systems research. I then went on to set up and lead a large collaborative team between TRT and University of Surrey to study remote collaboration technologies. I joined General Dynamics United Kingdom Limited in 2005, primarily to ensure exploitation of DIF DTC technologies into the UK Ministry of Defence Equipment Programme. I received my Chartered Physicist status in 2004 and am now a director of Prior Kain Ltd which is an innovation company. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience ranges from teaching GCSE students all the way up to teaching PhD students to improve their thesis writing skills. One of my students improved from a D to an A at GCSE level after just six months of tuition with me, and commonly students improve by at least one grade. |
Tutoring Approach: My tuition method involves making Maths and Physics fun so that children and young adults will remember their lessons and overcome the "I can't do science" syndrome. So that you can assess whether or not I am the right tutor for your child I offer the first lesson for free. |

| About Jennifer: I'm an American Masters student who has been living abroad since 2003. I moved to Scotland in September 2006 to study Ethnology and Folklore of Scotland. I work at a Secondary School as an administrator until the end of the school year. Next year I will continue on to my PhD. I have a lot of experience teaching children, including Drama and Improv. I look forward to teaching Elementary Japanese to any age group. |
Teaching Experience: 3 years of teaching English as a Foreign Language in Japan. I taught both children and adults, although adults were primarily at the Business level. I worked at Yamaha, Suzuki, Sony, and Honda to prepare employees for overseas transfers. On the third year I concentrated more on kindergarten and primary school English. |
Tutoring Approach: In the past I've been asked to design my own lesson plans, rather than be dependent on a book. If a student chooses a specific topic or grammar problem, I'm more than happy to follow through. If the student would prefer to use a textbook rather than a conversational based lesson, I am happy to design the course with the student. Group conversation classes are welcome! |
