| About Katherine: Hello, I am a second year graduate medical student currently ge's in London, and I have previously completed a degree in Physiological Sciences at Oxford University. I'm very keen on science and have always enjoyed Biology and Chemistry, having also studied these subjects at A-level. I would like to tutor these subjects at all secondary school levels through to A-level, and for Biology I can give tutorials at first year undergraduate level. I am also keen on studying languages and studied French up to AS-level at school, but I also spent 6 months living and working in Paris during my gap year, which has helped me to improve my written and conversational skills. I would be keen to give tutorials to school students at key stage 3 and GCSE level. |
Teaching Experience: I have worked as a teacher abroad on two occasions. During the summer of 2006 I worked in Poland for 3 weeks and taught English lessons to teenagers. The lessons were interactive and each teacher used their own ideas to create lesson plans. This experience helped me develop confidence in teaching, and to be creative during lessons. This summer I traveled to China to teach at a two-week education programme for young people interested in applying for university either at home or abroad (ages ranged from 15 to 19). I designed a series of seminars on medical neuroscience, and taught groups of 8 people. In addition, I gave several one-on-one tutorials. I also gave the students homework assignments and marked them. |
Tutoring Approach: I am an enthusiastic person and I really enjoy working with children and young people. I would approach the lesson by preparing well in advance in order to get the most out of the session, and I would hope to use my knowledge of how science relates to every day life and also to medicine to make the lessons interesting. I think it is important to always make sure the student is comfortable with the lesson material and is understanding it, and feels like they can ask questions. |

View Eleanor's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Eleanor: I am a bubbly, friendly, outgoing 23 year old female who loves working with people, particularly young people. I recently graduated from Edinburgh University with a First Class Honours in English Literature, and during my four years there I also studied Philosophy and German. At the moment I tutor several secondary school students around Edinburgh in Higher and Standard Grade and am keen to take on more. |
Teaching Experience: I have three years experience teaching the Higher and Standard Grade Syllabus to secondary school pupils in Edinburgh; I did this part-time while I was at university, and had on average three pupils a week, but now that I have graduated I am keen to take on more. I travel to their homes and generally find that an hour and a half is the best timespan for both myself and the student. In 2003 I taught in a primary school in Africa for eight months, for which I underwent a teacher training program, and in 2005 I lived in an orphanage in Cambodia for three months, where I taught English to the children on a full-time basis. I also lived in Singapore for one year, where I tutored English to higher education students on a part-time basis. I currently tutor several Higher students and one Standard Grade student on a weekly basis, and also tutor a Polish woman, assisting her with her reading and writing skills, as well as helping her to write CVs and Application Forms, to help her find a full time job in the UK. |
Tutoring Approach: I am bubbly, friendly and enthusiastic, and teaching English is my passion. I enjoy working with young people, and like to connect with them on a personal level, as well as assisting them on an academic level. I feel that since I went through it all not so long ago, I can understand their fears and anxieties about essays and exams. I always come fully prepared, with worksheets and tutorial plans prepared in advance; usually I ask the student the week before what s/he would like to concentrate on, so generally it is the student that sets the schedule, and I work around that. I feel that being a tutor is as much about giving the student a confidence boost as about preparing them thoroughly for the exams, and giving them the belief in themselves they need to do as well as they can. |

Tutoring Approach: Sometimes students fall between the cracks in the traditional classroom, and as a tutor it is my job to ensure I am tailoring each session to his or her own learning styles. I am keen to be in contact with the student's teacher to ensure we're working together to help the student to succeed. |

Tutoring Approach: In commencing a structured, syllabus-focussed approach, I work towards the goal of ensuring that my tutees feel secure about their abilities and the course content in preparation for exams. Every effort will be made to ensure that a sound understanding of the concepts underlying the facts is gained. I realise the importance of a good working relationship with my tutees. A pre-tutoring meeting will be arranged so that I can judge what requirements the tutee has and so that he/she can decide whether or not they will feel comfortable commencing a course of tuition with me. |

Where I am currently working is accountancy based but I would find it easier to teach subjects outside of accounting. I have done a lot of traveling over the years and so am used to different cultures and traditions, being of Jamaican heritage myself. Teaching Experience: I have taught English, Mathematics and Science to primary school aged children abroad, whose second language was English, for over a year Serving as a mentor throughout secondary school and university, I have helped others throughout their studies. | About francois: Born in Paris in 1982. Raised in Saintes a town in the South West of France, near La Rochelle. I went to study History at University . Then moved to Bristol, UK where i worked as a french assistant for 5 years at the prestigious Bristol Cathedral School. I am also an artist and musician. I play guitar, piano, and trumpet and do watercolour paintings. I have played and toured in many different professional and unsigned bands. |
Teaching Experience: I worked as a full time french assistant at the Bristol Cathedral School between 2003 and 2007. I focused mostly on improving the pupils conversational skills. | About Simeon: I am currently a PhD student in Optical communications and optoelectronics in the Electrical and Electronic department, University of Nottingham. I possess qualifications in a wide range of subjects ranging from Physics, Electronics and Mathematics. I enjoy Maths and computers (both as a hobby and academic) and I am a very enthusiastic person who loves solving problems and deriving satisfaction from finding solutions. I have been trained to be analytical in my thinking and problem solving approach. |
Teaching Experience: Lecturer, University of Malawi, Physics and Electronics, Physics Department (2002-2005) Assistant lecturer, University of Malawi, Physics and Electronics, Physics Department (2000-2002) Part-time lecturer, , University of Malawi, Malawi Polytechnic, Applied Sciences (2000-2001) |
Tutoring Approach: I usually take the famous "tell them what you are going to tell them, tell them, tell them what you have told them" to teaching a particular topic of a subject. Involvement of the tutee in the process is of utmost importance. Further, apart from addressing particular problems that the tutee has in a particular subject (subject area), it is important to revise and revisit general principles and place the subject area in context. Feedback from the tutee is very important: both on the methods employed as well as (and more importantly) assessing the tutee (in terms of assignments) on the material that has been discussed. It is always important to include a few sessions about problem solving techniques and approaching examinations. |

| About Holly: I am near completion of a psychology Bsc at University College London and hope to gain a first, In my last exams I got the highest in the year (2nd year exams). I love my subject but also have interests in Art and music. I am based in Guildford and commute to London for my course but my hours are very flexible and I drive so can travel to jobs. |
Teaching Experience: I have spent 3 summers working in a play capacity for a disabled children's charity so have experience of working with very challenging children and this is something I enjoy. I have had training as an ABA/VB tutor for autistic children and this involves teaching children a variety of skills such as speech, numeric and life skills but in a very specific way. I volunteered for 3 years at a drop in centre in Kings Cross for adults who were homeless and had mental health or addiction issues and here I was involved in a variety of activities which involved tutoring and teaching such as teaching the users of the service Internet skills and helping them with work for courses they were doing such as city and guilds certificates. My main interest is in psychology and I love my subject and have done my own research and spend a lot of time doing extra reading and keep up to date with all the important research happening in psychology. I study at the biggest psychology department in the country and its one of the best in the world and have access to the biggest library for psychology books in the country. In addition I have Internet access to all the best journals and science papers which I think could be of great help to someone really wanting to shine at psychology at any level and who may wish to pursue it further. I also have a mini library myself of psychology books that would be of great use! For someone who may want help during their undergraduate degree I have comprehensive notes for the first two years and would feel comfortable tutoring for these exams as well. I would feel very comfortable teaching special needs children in a variety of subjects. In addition I excelled at sociology a level and would be happy tutoring this subject up until A level. |
Tutoring Approach: I have had a lot of experience working with challenging adults and children and therefore take a very individual approach to tutoring as the children I have worked with have all needed very different ways of being taught. The most important approach I believe is being enthusiastic and I hope the children learn to love the subjects as much as I do but also enjoy learning them as well. I have taught children using a play style of teaching when appropriate for their needs but feel the most important thing is to tailor all tutoring to the children so they learn in the best way possible for their individual needs. |

| About Joanna: I am 27 years old and originally from Glasgow but now living in the borders... I have an Honours degree in Immunology and Pharmacology from the University of Strathclyde, and i worked for 3 years as a pre-clinical pharmacologist in a pharmaceutical company in Edinburgh before training to become a teacher. I also worked for 18 months as an English tutor in Japan, which allowed me to see some of the world!! |
Teaching Experience: PGDE(S) University of Strathclyde, Jordanhill Campus, Glasgow, 2005-2006 Whilst at Jordanhill i completed 2 8 weeks placements - in Knightswood Secondary school in Glasgow, and in Hermitage Scademy in Helensburgh. I completed my probationary year at Hillhead High in Glasgow, and am now permanently teaching in The Berwickshire High School in Duns |
Tutoring Approach: I generally use formative approaches to learning, covering main points or areas of difficulty in detail, then using motivational techniques such as quizzes, short answer questions and revision plans to reinforce knowledge and encourage independent learning and study. Study techniques are varied, constructing mind maps, bullet point, or diagramatic forms, whichever method best suits the child and enables them to retain and understand information. I also encourage problem solving practice - ensuring pupils are confident at tackling any graphs or calculations that they may encounter. |

| About Courtney: Hi there, I'm a female who is currently about to go into year 13 at College to complete my A Levels. I am posting to offer my services as a private tutor for those who may need a little extra help at school. I am not professionally qualified as a teacher, however, I have achieved excellent qualifications so far in my academia and have been told many times that I would make a good teacher. I can make home visits and sessions would most likely last for one to two hours at a time. Please do not expect miracles but if you feel that the progress made is not sufficient enough then you are not obligated to commit to any more sessions. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience goes as far as helping my friends and classmates with a concept that has been taught in the classroom but they have struggled with. I have also conducted several lessons for students in a junior school and in years 7, 8 and 9 concerning PSHE issues. I am confident that I will make an excellent tutor at highly competitive rates so please consider me. |
Tutoring Approach: I have always been a firm believer that learning is personal and thus it cannot be assumed that every person is suited to the same style of teaching. Once I get to know a student, I will find the areas which are of most concern and get an idea of what learning styles will be most effective. I have the advantage over many tutors that I am currently fully immersed in the education system... on the receiving end. This is beneficial as not only am I aware of a range of teaching methods, I know what does and does not work. In this way I am very adaptable unlike many teachers and tutors who can be 'set in their ways'. |

| About Samantha: I have a Biochemistry degree and a PhD in Biochemistry/Cell Biology from the University of Bristol. Through my studies and current connection with the scientific community I feel I have an up-to-date knowledge of current theories and ideas in the life sciences and that this viewpoint is advantageous for tutoring science at a variety of levels. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience of tutoring undergraduate students in Biochemistry and of supervising them during practical classes, both of which have involved assessment of written work and assignments. I also have experience of teaching school pupils during school visits to the university, and have found these experiences to be enjoyable and rewarding for both myself and the students. I am also a distance learning tutor for the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. I have a CRB check application in progress. |
Tutoring Approach: I feel that tutoring should not necessarily follow the same approach as more formal school teaching, and should provide an opportunity for the student to ask questions and maybe look at topics from a slightly different angle to that taught at school. I like tutoring to be fairly informal to allow the student to relax and not feel intimidated about asking questions on topcis they do not understand. As every student is different and learns in different ways, I try to adapt tutorials to target particular areas that the student finds difficult. Learning should be a fun experience but good grades and exam results are important too so I also offer help in exam technique to help students to practice answering questions that they will encounter during examinations. I can also offer small group tutorials for two or three students if desired. |
