| About Sheraz: I am an undergrad student at the London School of Economics. I believe young people can better give personal help to students, required outside the class. I say this from experience because as a student I learnt better from younger tutors. They were frank, less intimidating, they taught from a student's perspective, and they could tell me study techniques which most teachers would not emphasize on, perhaps because it was too long before that they prepared for exams. I have done A' Levels myself and I have done well. Very precisely, I have been a tutor in my college for Economics and Mathematics. Both being my majors. I have also been an assistant to a SAT instructor and counsellor. In addition of being a Tutor I have also been an economics Teacher's Assistant for Microeconomics, Macroeconomics, and International Economics. I can also cater to students with ADD, as it is a very common disorder in the US and the students just need a bit of self-esteem, especially those who have a self-pity attitude. I believe in a structured and organized study methodology. Paying attention to the syllabus, having enough time to cover all the past-papers, go through examiner reports and mark-schemes. I believe I can help student's from a student's perspective and train them to study in a very smart way. I got 6A's and 5B's in GCSE's and 3 A's in A levels. I look forward to hear from you soon. Regards, Sheraz Malik |
Teaching Experience: Economics Tutor and TA for Two years in College. Maths Tutor for 1 Year in College. Given Private Tutions to AP students in the U.S. for A.P. Economics. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe in studying smart. Consistency and time-management are the two most fundamental requirements for being successful. Personal tutoring is all about providing specialized study techniques for students. There is no one golden rule which would work on all students. It is more of a 'each to his own' approach which works in the end. Ideally speaking, I would help students finish off their syllabi at least 3 months before the exams to practice past-papers, read examiner reports, time their exams, look for marking schemes, and do the final polishing. And mathematics is something you can not learn in a day, practice is essential, some practice more than others, but there is no short-cut to acing the exam without regular practice. |

Types of Tutoring: From their home / Online
| About Mahmoud: I have recently graduated from City University having a BEng degree in Electronics with a 2:1 class of 65% overall mark. I loved Electronics since I was a student at school as I consider it as one of the major applications of Maths and Physics that I loved a lot. I'm the type of person who likes having his own way of thinking about things and this gives me the ability to explain and understand concepts from different perspectives. I always like being self-motivated and giving motivation to others to get involved in solving problems by thinking of their own new solutions. |
Teaching Experience: I used to give tutorial sessions to my colleagues at the university especially when they were in need for deeper explanations of hard concepts such as Maths, Physics, Computer Programming in C++ and Java based on the OOP principles. During the last summer, I ran a tuition program to a German colleague to explain to him the concepts of a module called Dynamics and Control which he had failed in the first attempt exam period. At the end of the summer, he got 80% in the resit exam and then sent me a thank-you letter in which he stated that the way I was teaching him was much better for him than the way of the module teacher himself. That really gave me a higher level of confidence in my own ability of teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach of tutoring is based on the 'friend-to-friend' rather than the 'teacher-to-student' relationship. The reason is to give the student a psychological feeling of that he/she is not being taught at a school or university class. A 5-minute break is always preferred to be given after each 2 hours of teaching. The main guaranteed outcome of each session is to implement a solid-state understanding and an overall coverage of the concept being discussed. Some testing questions of different difficulty levels are to be given at the end of each session to make sure the student has fully understood the concepts explained. Questions, course works, or home works are discussed after the relevant concepts have been fully explained and understood. The determined charge is 12 per hour. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About William: I am an engineering graduate from Texas A&M University in the United States, in the UK until December. I have a strong grasp of maths, physics and computer science, and the ability to translate that into elementary terms in order to help others grasp them. I love teaching others and the opportunity to help out in the community here really appeals to me! I am a British citizen, but I've been living in the U.S. for the last 16 years where I went to school and university. My hobbies include sports (I played lacrosse for my University) and music (I love playing piano!). I am basically just trying to provide for myself while I'm here in the UK visiting family. |
Teaching Experience: I've worked with children professionally and voluntarily, teaching and mentoring. I was a camp counselor at Alpine Camp for boys in Mentone, Alabama, living with and mentoring boys in a traditional boys camp environment. I got to know them on a personal level and taught them daily bible lessons as well as life lessons that can be learned in the hills of Alabama living in a cabin! I worked with boys aged 8-14. I was also a student leader at my Church in Houston, TX where I hung out one on one with boys aged 11-15. There I mentored them in a religious setting as well as just enjoyed playing games and enjoying the Houston summer with them. As far as tutoring goes, I have done a couple of semesters of volunteer tutoring when I was at Texas A&M where I worked with 14-18 year old boys and girls from a local high school teaching anything from Maths to English. In addition to that I was also given an offer to teach in the United States with a program called Teach for America, which is a prestigious program for top university graduates to go to urban state schools and teach. As a maths and science graduate I was very valuable to them, but I elected not to commit two years of my life to professional teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach to tutoring will be two fold. I want to connect and inspire. First I want to connect with the student and build a relationship to gain their friendship and respect. This can occur over several sessions, or it can occur quickly, depending on the nature of the student. Having the friendship and respect of a student means that they will listen more and listen better, and hopefully as a result learn more. Secondly, I want to inspire the student to learn the material with real examples, and personal anecdotes. Inspiration is the key to getting a student excited about the material, which helps them to want to learn, rather than just being forced to learn. Hopefully my personality and excitement about maths, physics and computer science will allow me to do those things naturally and easily! |

| About Samia: I am an international student doing the medical foundation programme at Albion College(Bloomburry sq. London). I am very fond of biology and chemistry. I am also very good at helping people in these fields. I often help my friends and they all say that ive been of great help. I am also fluent in french and have a very good french background. I am convinced i will be of great help to the children undertaking the GCSE exams. I took part in those exams myself and i know very well the style of questions and what the examiners are looking for. |
Teaching Experience: My teaching experience comes from teaching my cousins at home. |
Tutoring Approach: I know that understanding and revising is very good. However there is something which is much more important. It is the way of anwering the question which is the most important, i.e the student must make sure that he is giving the answer to what the examiner is looking for. For example the answer should be short but concise with the keywords the examiner is looking for. In my opinion practice makes perfect. If I were to teach someone taking part in GCSE I would make him practice past exam papers and correct the paper in front of him using the marking scheme from the examiner, emphasising on the keywords the examiner is looking for. |

| About John: I have completed a three year degree in Applied and Human Biology which i graduated with a 2:1 honours. My degree was very challenging and i was tutored by some of the leading professionals in their field so my degree education was very thorough and solid, also because the degree was applied it meant I spent alot of time in the laboratory so I have picked up many skills in this area also. Currently I study medicine at Barts and the London School of Medicine and Dentistry at Queen Mary University London after which i will become a qualified doctor. My knowledge in biology is very strong and coupled with my medical knowledge I have in depth resources for these subjects; such as lecture notes, books, slide shows etc. With the increased competition for medical school placements I would be an ideal tutor for preparation for Med School. |
Teaching Experience: For my degree in Applied and Human Biology it was necessary to lead group classes and educate fellow peers in a system called tutor learning. Currently I am in a similar situation twice weekly doing problem based learning. I have tutored my younger brothers and their friends through their GCSE's and AS levels. |
Tutoring Approach: I believe education should incorporate a more interactive approach rather than just sit and read through a book. I try to teach concepts, rather than just cram a students head full of facts and expect them to remember it. Once you understand the main concepts in biology it is easier to understand the harder aspects of biology. Biology and medicine are vast subjects so i teach students how to link concepts and facts to one another to make the subject more interesting and to consolidate learning. |

| About Lisa: I am a qualified primary school teacher. I tutor children in groups of 2-5 at my house in Crownhill. I provide all the resources that children need to prepare them for the 11+ exams. I charge 12 per hour session or 100 for ten sessions. I also offer workshops for children throughout the school holidays. |
Teaching Experience: I have been teaching for two years and offer a fresh, enthusiastic approch to teaching. |
Tutoring Approach: I am enthusiastic and encourage the children throughout their learning. I tutor children in groups as this approach is less formal and allows children to feel at ease when asking questions. At the end of each session I give the children a short test in order for them to get used to the timing of the eleven plus exams. The children are not compared to each other but they are encouraged to try to improve on the previous score or maintain a high score. |

| About Enoch: I live in Colchester with my wife and I'm in full time employment. At present I work for a national charity that supports churches who are actively engaged in communities. Tutoring Approach: I believe all children should find Mathematics and Science interesting, challenging and fun. I work towards pushing young people to reach their full potential and not be content with just passing exams. For example, if a student is hoping to get 'C' at GCSE Maths, I will work with the child to achieve at least a 'B'. Students happy with 'A' would be expected to aim for 'A*'! I find teaching subjects and relating it to real live through practical examples important to stimulate a child's interest to the subject. I'm a firm believer of home work and expect my students to complete all home work that is set. |
