| About Aisling: I am passionate about teaching as I love to share knowledge and cultivate the love of learning in others. I have a wide range of subject interests, though archaeology, history and art are my main interests. Some specific topics I have researched include: Renaissance & 17th century art and theory; Romanesque art & architecture; Greek & Roman art, archaeology and history; art in France 1850-1900; archaeological and art historical methodologies and theories. I am currently undertaking a Masters in Maritime Archaeology and History. I am also a practicing artist, working mostly in pen & ink, with a current installation in Bristol's St Stephen's Cafe. |
Teaching Experience: At University level I have taught on a Japanese Art & Architecture course to 2nd year undergraduates (at Trinity College Dublin). This included lessons on the Tea Ceremony, Namban Art, Zen Buddhist Art and the Art of Dress. I have also taught computer and English studies in Sri Lanka to primary school students and adult monks (at the Centre for Eco-Cultural Studies). I have spoken at conferences, as they are an excellent platform to foster interest and debate in a range of subjects (at Belfast and Cork, Ireland). |

I construct teaching modules to suit the needs and time constraints of the pupil. I hope to make learning a pleasant and rewarding experience that will benefit the pupil for life, not just for exams. View Douglas's Profile

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Douglas: I am a recently retired teacher with over 30 years of teaching experience. I have tutored privately for the past 20 years or so, primarily teaching maths at SATS and GCSE levels and chemistry at GCSE and Advanced Level. At any given time I normally have between 4 - 8 students of ages between 10 and 18 years. I am occasionally asked to take on adult students. I like to think that I get on well with my tutees, many of whom come on the recommendation of the parents of those I have previously taught. I strongly believe that one-to-one tuition is the most efficient and effective means of teaching, particularly for those who are less confident. |
Teaching Experience: I taught at an independent school in the West Country for over 30 years where I was at different stages a Housemaster, the Head Of Chemistry and Senior Master. I have been an examiner with the Edexcel Examination Board for the past 15 years. I still work for them as a principal examiner in A-Level Chemistry which involves the setting of examination papers as well as the management of a team of assistant examiners. |
Tutoring Approach: Students should be prepared to be be fully involved in the tutoring process and must want to succeed. I believe that in general I soon gain the confidence of my tutees, as it is important to develop a good working relationship with them as soon as possible. In many cases I find that I am coaching those who have lacked the confidence to progress properly in the large classes at school, or for some reason or another have fallen behind academically, perhaps through illness or from returning to the UK from abroad. Having experience of teaching both in a school and in a tutoring context, I know that much better progress can be made when the needs of the individual can be rapidly assessed and dealt with. |

View Gareth's Profile
Availability: Weekends / Weekdays
Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home
| About Gareth: I am a relaxed teacher, currently based in leicester. I work hard but also find it crucial to find the time to relax with friends and family. This would be something I would be looking to emphasis to my students, as outlined below. I am a keen sportsman, participating in rugby and I have started (currently) marathon running. I am therefore competitive, yet strategic. I combine my desires for rugby and teaching by being a rugby coach. |
Teaching Experience: I have recently completed my initial teacher training with success. I trained at Montsaye Community college in Rothwell and Ashby School, Ashby de la Zouch, whilst studying at the University of leicester. I have passed my course with masters credits (certificates will shortly be available if you wish to seen them). Although I am fairly new to teaching, my training years and plentiful amounts of previous teaching experiences have taught me a great deal. As I said above, I work hard to achieve my desired goals. I specialise in Biology post 16 and science in key stage 3 and 4. However, if desired, I am also able to tutor in Geography. I would be looking, as I do for my school pupils, to make the sciences enjoyable and make my time with my students efficient. My CRB check certificate is available should you wish to see it. |
Tutoring Approach: I have had plentiful experience of tutoring outside of school. As I have said above, and as my experience has been in, I am able to tutor in the three main sciences and geography. My approach to tutor is that I aim to make my sessions productive yet enjoyable. I aim to build my students academically and personally. In an academic sense, I aim to optimise students independence in their work, creating an ability for students to show independent thinking skills in order for them to succeed. Personally, I look for students to take ownership and pride in their work and to appreciate that heard work will pay off. I also make sure students enjoy the work they are doing and the way they are doing it. I do this by questionning students (in a professional manner) about who they are and what they enjoy, plus if they found a particular activity during tutoring a success. I will tutor at home or travel to the house if the tutee felt more relaxed there. |

| About Joanne: I hold a first-class degree in Spanish & am currently on the way towards obtaining a Spanish teaching diploma at the internationally recognised Instituto Cervantes. I have lived in Mexico and worked using Spanish in a commercial context. In addition I am CRB-checked and work as a freelance Spanish interpreter. Teaching Experience: Previously, I worked as an English teacher to foreign students. Now I am branching out to utilise and impart my Spanish language skills. My previous teaching experience has been to secondary school age groups and also to adults. |

| About Emily: I am a graduate of Warwick University, achieving a 2:1 in English and Theatre Studies. Since then, I have been living in London working as tutor and also as a box office assistant for the English National Opera. In 2006 I started a degree in costume Design at Wimbledon College of Art, due to graduate in 2009. I am a passionate lover of the arts in all forms, but particularly drama and literature. For the past three years I have been involved with a London based arts collective What They Could Do They Did , helping to organise events in London and Edinburgh. |
Teaching Experience: I have been working as private tutor for three years, working with a range of ages and subjects. I specialise in english and drama but have also taught maths, science, history and verbal reasoning. I have particular knowledge of entrance exams to London Secondary schools. I also have experience working with children's drama groups and am currently working with the Lewisham Youth Theatre. |
Tutoring Approach: In my experience as a tutor I have learned that it is often a child's confidence that needs the most work. School environments are not suitable for all children and they may feel pressured or shy when surrounded by their peers. I try to re-enforce my position as a tutor rather than a teacher and look for innovative and fun ways to encourage the pupils to learn. I also read with all my pupils, regardless of the subject I am teaching. Everybody should have the oppurtunity to enjoy learning! |

| About Magdalena: I'm a young, professional and ambitious PhD researcher. My project focuses on bilingual Polish-English children, and I am in my final year. I am a trustworthy person with her own initiative and drive. My creative side is expressed in music, photography, theatre... |
Teaching Experience: I began teaching English to secondary school pupils at the age of 21. Then I started working at a language school where I used to teach English to adults and children age 4-7, while still tutoring students age 16-19. In 2005 I was awarded a 3-year PhD scholarship in the UK. It included teaching Polish at the University of Surrey, which I have been doing up till now. I teach Polish to students of various nationalities and ages. |
Tutoring Approach: I have always been a very patient teacher with a head full of ideas. I try to recognise the strongest sides to the students I teach. Each of us has a strong "channel" through which we learn. Some of us prefer writing tasks more than listening exercises. Some prefer visuals and others will be happy to learn a list of vocabulary items by heart. I try to get to know my students and work according to their learning nature. My tutoring is always full of fun and discovering new areas, but also setting goals and trying to reach them. |

| About Jennifer: I have a background in Biology, having completed a degree at Manchester University in Biomedical Sciences achieving a high 2.1. Since graduating I have worked in research and published papers in both Nature Medicine and Neuron. I currently work in the Marketing department of a small and friendly scientific publisher. I have a passion and a understanding of Biology, and also the ability to teach it (I'm in marketing because I love to communicate about science). |
Teaching Experience: Although I have not yet tutored pupils on a one to one basis, many of my friends are teachers and I have recently helped organise many science activity days for their classes (primary and secondary schools). I loved doing this and I believe I helped the pupils understand science topics a little better. I have also used to work in a Nursery school as an assistant (part time) before I went to university and have a good ability with children. |
Tutoring Approach: I would have a organised and dedicated approach to tutoring - using the first session to highlight what your child needs to learn and understand in order to progress in his/her schooling. I would try to make lessons as interesting and inspiring for your children as possible and would be firm on homework if needed. |

| About Josephine: I am a qualified teacher working in upper Key Stage Two. I am qualified to teach all national curriculum subjects. I have a calm and positive manner which ensures children feel comfortable and confident to try their best. In my experience this approach allows children to achieve the best of their potential. |
Teaching Experience: I have experience of working with children aged from 4 to 15 years old. I have taught widely in schools in this country, taught English as a foreign language within mainland Europe and have tutored children of various ages. |
Tutoring Approach: I have a varied approach to teaching; the style and manner of delivery is ascertained by the child and I consistently retain flexibility in planning of sessions in order that progress is adapted to suit the individual needs of the child. I also combine interactive and fun sessions with more traditional written and independent work. I would ideally provide work to be completed outside of scheduled sessions to encourage understanding to become more deeply embedded. |
