| About Karina: I received 11 GCSE's AAABB at A-level and a 2.1 at university whilst holding down two part time jobs.I am currently employed as a trainee professional indemnity insurance broker. |
Teaching Experience: As the daughter of a teacher I have been involved with voluntary tutoring schemes since I achieved my GCSE's. I also volunteered as a teaching assistant as part of the Manchester Leadership Programme whilst at the University of Manchester. |
Tutoring Approach: I think that everyone can connect with education, it is just a matter of how it is taught. Afterall we don't struggle to learn things we like the thought of. Tutoring is about changing a persons attitude to education to enable them to engage with the material. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Deborah: Having spent the last six years writing creatively and critically from home (while raising a small family), I recently completed postgraduate modules at Oxford Brookes and Oxford University in English literature. I am studying at Oxford University for a postgraduate diploma in Theology. |
Teaching Experience: Supply teaching in Oxford Community School was been a real 'eye-opener'. My main teaching challenges were managing large groups, and maintaining interest in a variety of topics. Covering for the head of English and Drama at Magdalen College School during his paternity leave, I gained a good insight into life in an academically ambitious school. As a full-time position, teaching across the years in the upper school, I enjoyed working in a team of motivated skilled teachers. I have enjoyed helping out in the reception class and year 1 classes at St Barnabas School. Discovering how children learn as well as what they learn has been illuminating. |
Tutoring Approach: I found that tutoring requires a high level commitment, time, patience and dedication. I've taught many subjects as a personal tutor to students ranging from 15 to 50 years old, from English literature to Motivational psychology. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / Online
| About Harriet: I have just finished my A-levels in Religious Studies, Classical Civilisation and Design Technology (all of which I am happy to tutor) and achieved A's in all of them, which I am very pleased with. I also judge trampolining which I enjoy greatly, and have achieved my gold Duke of Edinburgh. I am outgoing, bubbly and confident, characteristics which have been enhanced through my part time job in Lush and my participation in the CCF. I enjoy being around people and encouraging them to achieve their full potential. |
Teaching Experience: I have taught aerobics and trampolining, which are my favourite sports and I enjoy encouraging others so they too may enjoy them as much as I do. I have also taught primary school children during work experience, these children had English as a second language and I helped them improve both their reading and writing skills as well as their confidence in their spoken English. |
Tutoring Approach: Encouragement is, in my mind, key in order to improve within any subject. Having been a student myself, I know how boring studying can get so the more fun it can be the better. I also believe that understanding something is necessary to be able to learn it, and that the simpler that something is made, the easier it is to understand. Of course, simple doesn't mean easy. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Michael: I am a postgraduate at the University of Bristol; I have a varied educational background in Music, Sociology, Theology, Classical Civilisation, and particularly (my main subject) Philosophy. Within philosophy my areas are quite expansive; ethics, metaphysics, aesthetics, history of philosophy, philosophy of science, epistemology and the interplay between them. I have an undergraduate degree in Sociology and Philosophy (2:i) and am reading towards my MA, moving on to PhD. |
Teaching Experience: I have run discussion groups and run talks and seminars of my work, and encouraged discussions in groups; I have also been a teaching assistant at a primary school. |
Tutoring Approach: I like to help people realise their potential, and help people to help themselves. What is important is to make the material seem approachable, and never to say something is hard; that already makes it difficult from the word go. There is a difference between having lots of steps and procedure, to being hard. Nothing is really hard, its just not seen how it can be overcome. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Francesca: I'm in my 3rd year at Oxford University, studying Psychology and Physiology, and I'm really enjoying my subject. I got 3As and 1B at A-level (French, RS and Biology; Drama and Theatre Studies) and 5A*s, 3As and 1B at GCSE, with A* in Maths and Combined Science. My biggest hobby is singing, and I'm in 4 choirs/singing groups at the moment, including the Kent Youth Choir and the Kent Youth Chamber Choir. I enjoy travelling, and have no qualms with driving to jobs! |
Teaching Experience: I haven't had any formal teaching experience, but for both our first-year and second-year exams, I helped a friend studying my subject with elements of the course that she did not understand, and during my Religious Studies A-level, explained some of the more obscure philosophical concepts to other members of my class. I also have a 13-year-old brother who I have been helping for many years now with his schoolwork! |
Tutoring Approach: I am a very patient person, and I understand that some subjects or topics are simply hard for the person to grasp. If one method of explanation doesn't work, I do my best to come up with new ideas of how to explain the concept in question, as I know that different teaching methods are needed for different types of learners. I am also very organised, and I will work before a tutorial to make sure that I have covered the topics that need to be taught. |

| About Charlie: My name is Charlie Sunda and I am 24. I have a BA in Philosophy, Religion and Ethics and an MA in Psychology of Religion. I am an excellent motivator and I am positive that I can maximise your child's potential. I am very easy to get on with and I find that pupils always work hard for me. |
Teaching Experience: I am currently teaching Religious Education in a school - I also do private tuition. |
Tutoring Approach: My approach is based around motivation: I realise that it is not enough to provide a pupil with information and expect them to necessarily achieve a top grade. Many talented pupils need a mentor who understands their needs and who can help them become self-motivated. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Lauren: I am very patient and good with people of all ages. I achieved very high grades in my GCSEs (4A*s and 6As) and A Levels (3As and a B). I live opposite Manchester Grammar School, which would be very useful if I were to tutor somebody from this school, as travel for the pupil would be very easy. |
Teaching Experience: Tutoring and mentoring troubled and struggling children aged between 13-17 at an underprivileged school in Slough, helping them not only with their school subjects, but with decisions about their futures such as subjects to take and just generally keeping them out of trouble. |
Tutoring Approach: I consult with the parents beforehand to see how they would prefer I went about tutoring their child, but generally I like to build up a rapour with the child so that they feel what I am teaching or helping them with applies to them and so that they feel comfortable and willing to learn from me. I am young which helps with this, as the pupils do not feel as though they are being tutored by someone who does not or cannot understand them. I am kind and patient but also firm and disciplined. After finding out the topics needed to be covered, I assign parts of these, or the topics as a whole to a session and go through it so that it is easy to understand, before working through examples with the student and then overseeing and helping them to work through them by theirselves until they feel comfortable with the content. |

Types of Tutoring: Travels to you / From their home / Online
| About Mary Alice Louise: I am a mature female teacher (50s), experienced in teaching levels ranging from 11-plus pupils in English, Maths and Science to undergraduate students in Philosophy. I am also an AQA examiner in Philosophy. I currently lecture parttime in philosophy in an FE department. I am also a Visiting Lecturer with the University of Sunderland's Centre for Lifelong Learning in Philosophy and Religion. I am interested in tutoring students for the Philosophy and Ethics section (A/AS)offered by the OCR RS syllabus, and the AQA pure Philosophy syllabus (A/AS). Although Philosophy & Ethics is my first subject, I teach English up to A2 Level. I am also competent in French and Latin up to year 9. Although I work in FE/HE now, I am experienced at working at secondary level. I am also quite at home teaching children preparing for SATS at Key Stages 2 (LIT/NUM/SCIENCE) and 3 in basic Literacy and Numeracy skills, alongside any chosen subjects listed above. Speak to me privately as I may be able to offer other subjects, depending on the level required. |
Teaching Experience: I just recently received Grade 1s (excellent) in two observations external to my place of employment. I recently gave A/AS Level lectures at the University of Durham's 6th Form Study Day on RS and Philosophy/Ethics (March 2007). I have taught in the FE/HE sector now for over 5 years now (college and university). I have prepared children for the NI 11 -plus exam. in Eng, Maths and Science (5 years). I have experience of workign within the comprehensive school setting (2 years) I have privately tutored Thai/Chinese children and adults in basic literacy I cover for Basic Skills in Lit and NUM with adults (5 years) I tutored groups of undergraduate philosophy students (3 years) |
Tutoring Approach: I like operating within a relaxed and informal but highly academic approach to the subject. Results count - discipline is important. I have high expectations of my students. However, the discipline I speak of is something that the student m,ust be helped gain for him or herself. Only a love of learning can engender this and that is my primary task as an educator: to help build enthusiasm and self-belief in the student. Perhaps one of my my best strengths is that I am a sensitive and empathetic human being, concerned not only with bringing to life the potential inherent in each individual but in ensuring that this is academically orientated and driven. Pivotal to this process is the nourishing of the student's belief in him or herself as someone capable of reaching and achieving those desired further goals. I also have a sense of humour! The actual session is structured: after an initial diagnostic, I lesson-plan the time we have over a period or weeks and months, breaking down into elements the various sections of the curriculum needing studied. We work with past papers/with examiners' recommendations, with building on general thinking and specific critical skills, and ultimately tailor the course to the individual's needs. Some degree of homework is expected, as assessment and feedback procedures largely rely on this. I like to thik I operate as a first among equals |

| About Julian: My name is Julian Waterfield and I have been teaching Religious Studies for a number of years in England, teaching pupils from 11-18 as well as some work in primary schools. I'm new to Belfast, but don't worry - the English and NI systems are very similar! I've also got tutoring experience in intensive Easter revision courses as well as being an examiner at A-level (see below for more details). Married, with no children and three cats, I live in East Belfast. |
Teaching Experience: Head of department in secondary schools near Oxford and in Durham, teaching 11-18s from 2003-2008. Senior examiner for Philosophy of Religion at A-level, marking a range of AS and A2 papers. Regular Easter revision tutor with a major tuition company, providing intensive support for AS and A2 level students in all major papers within the subject (Philosophy, Ethics, Old and New Testaments, World Religions, Church History and so on...). |
Tutoring Approach: The most important thing is to assess your needs before making a decision about what to do and how to approach things. I support a skills-based approach rather than what simply amounts to memorising without understanding. I prefer working with individuals or small groups than larger groups when it comes to tutoring. I can support what is being done in school or provide 'from scratch' tuition prior to exams. I am happy to support online or else to tutor at my home (East Belfast) or yours. Please note that a mileage surcharge applies if I have to travel over 5 miles. If you are a university-level or mature student, please feel free to contact me to discuss your needs before tying yourself in to paying out money! |

| About Lucy: My name is Lucy Laycock. I am currently studying English Literature and an Education module at Durham university. I am passionate about learning and teaching and am planning to become a teacher after university. I read widely, this is one of my greatest passions. I am also a strong writer and can edit fluently, with my work having been published for example by Sky Sports and "Great Minds". I also speak strong Spanish, having studied it to A level and spent much time in Spanish speaking countries; most recently this summer in Costa Rica! Due to the nature of my course I can offer a lot of flexibility, whether it is just for a lesson to help on a difficult subject, or for a more intensive course to help a pupil reach their full potential and receive the one to one tuition they need. I am also a keen sailor and enjoy travelling and drama. I am outgoing and enjoy working with young people. |
Teaching Experience: In April 2007 I worked in a school in Algeciras, Spain for 4 weeks. I taught students age 3-18 in English as a foreign language. At school (I left in July 2007) I was Head Girl and as such was involved in extra curricular teaching methods such as accompanying students on field trips. This summer I went to Costa Rica and taught underprivileged children aged 9-13, once again in English as a foreign language. I also worked with infant children at a daycare centre. I am honoured to have been accepted this year onto the government "Student Associates Scheme" and will be spending time in a school in the Durham area teaching English to key stage 3 (11-13 year olds). This will compliment my Education module at university. |
Tutoring Approach: Each lesson should be geared towards the pupil. In some cases it may be appropriate to focus upon the particular area/s in which the pupil is struggling and to explain them in more detail, perhaps in new ways that will be more comprehendable to the individual. Other times it may be appropriate to run a course of lessons to cover a particular topic area alongside school study time, to compliment in class learning and aid with class set homework. School textbooks would be an essential aid to lessons to make the learning appropriate to the section of the curriculum. I certainly think it is important to set some exercises to do between lessons, or to prepare for my next visit. This confirms knowledge and gives the pupil a chance to practise on their own. Of course, if at any point the individual was struggling they would be free to contact me by email or telephone for help. Finally it is important to make sure that lessons are both fun and engaging, and that there is a good relationship between tutor and tutee. I think my age, and the fact I have recently finished education myself, makes me much more able to relate to younger age groups than some tutors. |
