Tutoring Approach: I have found through my experience that the best methods of learning is through setting realistic and dynamic targets, working through examples and having an approachable teacher. I would set about teaching by explaining the concepts of a particular theory or problem and then mentor a student through a set of example questions either from past exam papers of from a syllabus. I would then expect the student to approach the problem by themselves with a realistic amount of homework and then discuss any errors or difficulties faced. |

| About Paul: My name is Paul and I am an MA student at Durham University. I have a BA in International Relations and Modern History, and A levels in Maths, History and Business Studies (All A grades) as well as French AS level and several other A grade GCSEs. Not only this but I also have a lot of experience in working with children, having worked at a summer cmpa in America the past two summers, working with a variety of ages from 8 through 17. I have also volunteered and worked in local schools with the University and mentored sixth formers whilst doing my undergraduate degree. I have a valid CRB background check and have been through extensive child protection training with the YMCA and evidence of this is available upon request. |
Teaching Experience: I started tutoring whilst doing my A-levels where I tutored several children in the main school my sixth form was attached to and enabled them to improve their grades over the course of their GCSE year, several from D to A grades. I continued with some tutoring during my undergraduate studies and enjoy the results when a tutee improves their knowledge of their subject with my help. I am looking to continue this at Durham University and hope to help several tutees in the area. |
Tutoring Approach: I find that it is most constructive to ask the tutee what they feel they are struggling with first off the bat and address these immediate concerns through methods of different explaining methods and going through exercises with them, as once these are dealt with they will expose other gaps in their knowledge or other areas they do not feel comfortable with. I also am a huge advocate of teaching good exam technique as this can really make the difference between the higher grades and will pass on my knowledge to my tutees. |

Teaching Experience: In June 2008, I was fortunate to be offered a placement at Forest Gate Community School on the Student Associates Scheme developed by the government to raise the aspirations of young people at secondary schools in London. I was a mathematics tutor at Forest Gate Community School for 3 weeks and my responsibility was to assist teachers during maths lessons by giving individual students and groups of student's one to one tutoring. I was usually assigned to help students who were weak at mathematics and who needed assistance. I was exposed to teaching maths across all year groups from year 7 to year 11 and also helping teachers plan and execute some of their lessons. I believe the experience made me a better teacher because I have developed the ability to better understand the needs of students with different abilities. Tutoring Approach: I understand that students have different approaches to learning and thus, my approach to tutoring is structured to each group of students with similar learning types. Some students learn my repetition and my writing their work over and over again whilst some learn by hearing (auditory learning). My tutoring approach accommodates this different learning types. I encourage students who learn by repetition to do a lot of home work while I encourage those who prefer auditory learning to play maths games and I create more interactive exercises for this group.
