Information About Theresa:

Personal Description:

I am deeply passionate about both Art and teaching, and I believe that creativity has the power to transform a student's confidence, independence and sense of identity. I genuinely enjoy helping students discover what excites them creatively and then guiding them to develop those ideas into meaningful, successful work. For me, teaching Art is not simply about techniques or grades; it is about encouraging curiosity, experimentation, resilience and individual expression.
I bring energy and enthusiasm into my lessons and aim to create an environment where students feel supported, inspired and confident enough to take creative risks. One of the most rewarding aspects of teaching is seeing a student develop from being unsure of their abilities into someone who is proud of their work and excited about what they can achieve. My passion for Art and education has remained strong throughout my career, and I continue to find great satisfaction in helping young people develop their skills, achieve excellent outcomes and progress towards their future creative ambitions.

Teaching Experience:

I have over 25 years of teaching experience in Art & Design across secondary and post-16 education, including 18 years as a Head of Department. I have taught GCSE and A Level courses in Fine Art, Graphic Design, Photography, Fashion, 3D Design and broader Art & Design, working with students of a wide range of abilities, interests and learning needs.
My teaching is highly student-centred. I take time to understand each learner's interests, strengths, aspirations and preferred way of working, then use this to plan engaging lessons and projects that are both personally meaningful and closely aligned with curriculum and assessment requirements. I have extensive experience supporting students with sketchbook development, contextual research, experimentation, refinement, final outcomes, portfolio development, coursework and examination preparation.
I have worked with several UK examination boards, including WJEC, Eduqas, AQA and Pearson Edexcel, and I also have examiner and moderator experience. In addition, I have experience working with SEND students, alternative provision and one-to-one online tutoring, where I adapt my teaching style and pace to suit the individual learner.
A key strength of my teaching is helping students understand exactly what is expected of them and how to make progress. I provide clear guidance, structured project planning and regular feedback, while encouraging students to become confident, independent and creative thinkers. My aim is always to help students enjoy the subject, achieve excellent outcomes and develop strong portfolios that support progression to further study, university and creative careers.

Tutoring Approach:

My lessons are built around you as an individual. I take time to understand your interests, strengths, goals and the way you learn best, then I design each session around that. You will learn how to develop ideas, experiment with materials and techniques, improve your sketchbook and portfolio, understand assessment objectives and make stronger creative decisions. I will guide you step by step, explain clearly what examiners are looking for and help you organise your work so that you can make consistent progress without feeling overwhelmed. My aim is to make lessons enjoyable, focused and encouraging, while helping you become more confident, independent and capable of producing work that reflects your own creative identity.
