Personal Description:
Doing maths differently...maths is all about patterns, rules, proof, specific vocabulary and finding alternative techniques for problem solving...For 18 years I have been helping students of all ages overcome a fear of maths through to excelling in exams...I have lived and worked in Europe so understand the need to communicate clearly 'know your audience'; as an accountant I gained real life insight into problem solving and explaining finance to operations departments; sitting and then marking professional exams.
Students have been recognised with 'best improved student' or 'outstanding achievement' awards whilst a year 7 student recently gained a place on Parallel maths mentoring programme that selects students worldwide.
Maths has an uncanny ability to highlight different learning skills - I help students with dyslexia, ADHD and autism find more suitable ways of doing things, looking through a different spectrum.
Teaching Experience:
Head of Maths Olive Secondary School Bradford Teaching years 7-11 in all ability year groups and ESOL students.
Beckfoot School Bingley Teaching Assistant supporting students with a wide range of learning skills (prior to Hazelbeck)
Carleton Primary School Skipton Teaching maths to Gifted & Talented students including preparation for entrance exams
Tutoring Approach:
Working 1-2-1 with students allows you to focus on their individual gaps in learning, adapting to changes in topic being taught in school. I tutor online since this allows me to split time into smaller bitesize chunks of 20 or 30 minutes, keeping on top of issues as they arise and the option to record so that learning can be reviewed; additional in person tuition at my home is helpful when marking exam papers or for specific topics such as graphs or transformations.
I use a range of online materials for teaching, question banks with videos and exam practice.
I support students from state schools, entrance exam state grammar schools and also private schools so I have gained an in depth understanding of different styles of teaching.
