Information About Michael:
Personal Description:
I am a fully qualified secondary mathematics teacher with over 20 years of experience, including 10 years as Head of Mathematics in a successful secondary school.
Throughout my career, I have worked with students of all abilities, helping them to build confidence, improve their understanding, and achieve strong outcomes in mathematics. As a former Head of Maths, I have an in-depth understanding of the GCSE curriculum and what is required for students to succeed in exams.
I am passionate about making maths accessible to all, and helping students overcome barriers to learning. I pride myself on being calm, patient and supportive, creating a positive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and developing their skills.
Teaching Experience:
I have over two decades of experience teaching mathematics in secondary schools, at Key Stage 3, GCSE (both Foundation and Higher tiers), and A-level.
As Head of Mathematics, I led a large department and was responsible for curriculum design, staff development, and improving student outcomes. During this time, I successfully raised attainment across all key measures, including significant increases in GCSE results.
My experience includes:
Teaching across the full ability range at KS3, GCSE, and A-level.
Preparing students for GCSE exams (inc. AQA, Edexcel & Eduqas)
Designing and delivering intervention programmes
Supporting students who lack confidence in maths
Stretching higher-attaining students aiming for top grades
I am also highly experienced in mentoring teachers, and supporting them in developing effective teaching strategies.
Tutoring Approach:
My approach to tutoring is structured, supportive and tailored to each individual student.
I begin by identifying any gaps in understanding and areas of difficulty, then build a clear and secure foundation before moving on to more complex topics. I focus on helping students develop confidence as well as competence, as this is often the key to success in mathematics.
Sessions typically include:
Clear explanations of key concepts
Guided practice with targeted questions
Regular use of exam-style questions
Development of problem-solving skills
Ongoing feedback and encouragement
I place a strong emphasis on exam technique for GCSE students, ensuring they understand how to approach questions and maximise marks.
Above all, I aim to create a calm and positive learning environment where students feel supported and able to make steady progress.
