Personal Description:

A Graduate of Manchester University with a Joint Hons degree in Geography and Geology I am an Earth Sciences Teacher with over 25 years experience in the classroom. I can fully appreciate that not everyone learns in the same way, and I therefore believe that learning has to be tailored to the individual. I have led Fieldwork excursions for my students, an integral part of understanding Earth Science, and so can identify the concepts of practical and investigation work required in the Fieldwork requirement for both A level and GCSE Geography. I have also taught and led Fieldwork in A level Geology and A level Environmental Science, so have a broad knowledge of the integrated Earth Sciences. I also understand what skills students need to successfully tackle examination questions.

Teaching Experience:

Classroom Teacher of A level Geography, Geology, and Environmental Science for 30 years.
I have tutored students on a one -to -one basis for both A Level and GCSE students in preparation for Examinations and also when they are experiencing difficulty with specific topic/aspects of their curriculum. One area which I enjoy is identifying exactly what the student is having problems with - often they are not sure - and pin pointing those areas which need concentrated effort can be illuminating for both them and me.

Tutoring Approach:

I first of all identify where the student needs help, is it in a particular area or aspect of the subject, or are they 'struggling' overall. Once this has been ascertained, I then identify how the student learns - are there specific methods I can employ and show them in order to facilitate their learning journey. If the area of concern is specific, then I clarify the level of knowledge the student already has, and build on that in order to comprehensively expand their skills and knowledge to the required level of expertise. If the concern is more widely based, it is often necessary to breakdown the subject into 'bite-size' pieces, in order to build a solid foundation for further progress. All these strategies will be measured regarding their success by exercises/assignments for the student to complete and have assessed with feedback.
