Fenella - Loughborough tutor

Information About Fenella:

Personal Description:

I have lived in Mountsorrel for 15 years with my family. Originally from the Isle of Man, I have been based in Leicester for 25 years since meeting my husband. Now that my children are older, I have more time to spend tutoring on a 1:1 basis, which is something I love to do. My first degree was a BSc, followed by a PGCE in Primary Education with a Science Specialism. I am currently completing a MEd in school based Leadership and Management with the University of Buckingham.

Teaching Experience:

I qualified as a primary school teacher in 2004 and have since worked across the primary age range, including both SATs years 2 and 6. I spent 5 years as a year 6 teacher, where I achieved excellent SATs results. I have held a number of leadership positions in primary schools, including Year 5/6 lead, and currently work as a Deputy Head teacher in a city school. I am a Specialist Leader in Education for English, which means I work with other schools who request English leadership support to help develop their teaching and curriculum provision.

Tutoring Approach:

Having worked as a teacher, tutor and senior leader, both in schools and privately for nearly 20 years, I have an excellent understanding of how children learn and the curriculum requirements relevant to the different primary phases. My teaching approach is always based on current research into what supports children to know more and remember more. Children whose working memory is poor need support in order to help them focus on the core learning, and to help them remember the key facts needed to help them progress. My approach to tutoring is first to build confidence, so that children feel able to take risks and believe in themselves. I then plan, teach and asses small sequences based on their current understanding that will support children in developing the knowledge and skills they need to tackle age appropriate tasks. Helping children to progress takes time and patience, particularly if they experience difficulties, but with the right support and encouragement I believe that all children can develop and improve their confidence and self-belief.
