James - Oxford tutor

Information About James:

Personal Description:

My name is James, and I am writing to apply to be one of your maths tutors. I have been working at another tutoring agency full-time since November 2019, and am now looking to transition to tutoring full-time. I have gained over 1,400 hours of tutoring experience in the last two years from GCSE up to and including the STEP and MAT exams, and have received overwhelmingly positive feedback from clients and students alike (a selection of my reviews can be found below).

Reviews

"James is helping my son prepare for his STEP exams. According to my son, James has been teaching methods for solving problems in a similar way and standard in which they did on the Cambridge STEP day. James "knows his stuff", is friendly and teaches well. My son looks forward to the sessions, has advanced in his Maths and feels more confident afterwards."

"James was such a great help with my Maths A level. He was patient and always made me feel comfortable asking questions when we were going over topics I had found difficult in class and his explanations were always very thorough. I always walked away from our sessions much more confident about my Maths than before and occasionally having explored interesting material that went slightly beyond the specification."

"An outstanding tutor. Responsive, encouraging, supportive and kind. Thanks, James, for all your help."

Teaching Experience:

Currently, I have over seven years of maths tuition experience under my belt from 11+, 13+, GCSE and A level through to the TMUA, MAT and STEP exams (the Oxford and Cambridge entrance exams respectively, with the STEP also being required for some other top unis). I also have experience working with higher KS2 pupils who were not being stretched by their maths curriculum, and have a strong knowledge of Python which I have accumulated myself outside of my academic studies.

Tutoring Approach:

The trick with any teaching is figuring out the correct balance between exploring and explaining content and then asking more questions of the students as we go deeper into the topic, as this will ensure they're properly engaged and embed understanding about why rules and processes work. They will then be able to apply their knowledge confidently to a variety of situations. Students grasp ideas at different rates but keeping this framework in mind, while also addressing gaps and misconceptions, has proved to be very effective. Therefore, as we are going through a topic, I will pose slightly harder and harder questions to the student to see if they can fill in the gaps themselves, while being very receptive to the student's needs and making the jumps slightly smaller if necessary to ensure a positive experience. This approach, together with helping students to spot connections between different areas of maths, builds confidence and resilience when solving problems which is not just essential for maths but is also an important life skill.
