James - Manchester tutor
Information About James:
Personal Description:
Hi, my name is James and I have been teaching for 5 years! I am currently a Head of Faculty for Humanities at a comprehensive School in Greater Manchester and teach all of the Humanities subjects: RS, History and Geography. I am originally from Kent but moved up to Manchester 5 years ago for a change of scene and am still here now. I have taught students in lots of different countries; including German language schools in Bavaria, a year spent working in refugee camps across Greece and two weeks at a school in The Gambia. I like to think I am very friendly, reliable and have a good grasp of all the Humanities subjects.
Teaching Experience:
Within School, I have held the roles of Geography Teacher, Subject Leader of Geography and Faculty Leader of Humanities. I have also led a Youth Programme, a bit like the Scouts in the UK, across three refugee camps in Greece. I have taught History, Geography and RS at KS3 and GCSE Level, helping to dramatically improve my school's results and am confident tutoring all of these subjects to A-Level, in addition to A-Level Politics (the subject that I studied for my degree). I have tutored before, both online and in person; it is something that I enjoy and find very rewarding.
Tutoring Approach:
I believe that tutoring should be engaging and that students should look forwards to tutoring sessions - I find that this produces the best results. It is important to ensure students understand the importance and relevance of what they are learning so that it isn't just a case of 'learning for the sake of it'; this is an approach that I deploy in the classroom too. It is very important to expose students at GCSE and A-Level to exam questions and work through examples with the students, modelling good answers and then slowly taking that support away as they feel more confident. Giving students lots of feedback on their answers is also important too - this is something that isn't always possible in the classroom with larger groups!
