Giovanni - Wandsworth tutor
Information About Giovanni:
Personal Description:
I am an International Relations Master's student (Barcelona Institute of International Studies) and a History, Spanish and Portuguese graduate (University of Nottingham). I work in research and development for a successful start up platform and I also proofread Italian academics' english language publications.
I'm a sociable and open minded person who grew up in four countries and has since lived in an additional five countries where I have worked and studied. I therefore believe I am adaptable to all sorts of different types of people and having taught in many contexts and for a variety of different needs, I have learned to apply this adaptability also to my teaching.
My fundamental interests lie in politics, development and climate change. My current day job is directed towards strengthening marginalised communities and rendering them more resilient to external economic shocks and I would like to keep working in either research or as a practitioner in development and making our society more sustainable and socially just.
Teaching Experience:
I have taught in a large variety of contexts, from individual tutoring with students of any age, to groups of up to sixty public school teachers in 35 degree heat in Vietnam, to university and highschool classes. I am very experienced with the IELTs and with writing style, grammar and fluency. I enjoy teaching pronunciation and giving students the confidence to speak fluently as well.
I have mostly taught english as a foreign language, but have also assisted in the production of various Masters' thesis of students on my current course as well as having proofread about thirty to fifty published academic articles of International Law from professors in Italy.
In my current studies I am consistently receiving distinctions and together with the assistance I have been asked for by other students this has given me the confidence to teach the topics of my studies as well, namely History, Politics and International Relations.
Tutoring Approach:
As a fundamentally empathetic person I quickly learn my students' needs, worries and strengths and weaknesses and adapt my teaching accordingly. With english teaching I ensure to create engaging content that motivates my students to express themselves and therefore use the language and challenge themselves to better express their ideas. When working with academic subjects I find key perspectives that make the student question their assumptions, approach texts and cases critically and find deeper manners of analysing the issues at hand.
I believe learning must be enjoyable to be truly effective and to be enjoyable the content must be interesting and the teacher empathetic not only to the student's personality but also their mood on any given day. I therefore invest effort and thought into how to make the content of any class come alive and to ensure that my students leave my courses with a passion for the topic, something that I have heard I have achieved consistently from student feedback.
